Matt Waters already did a review of Glory by Honor IX back when the first show first broadcast over internet pay-per-view. Since I’m reviewing ROH DVD reviews now, I figured I’d watch the show a second time and write a review of my own.  If you’d like to read additional thoughtsabout the matches in detail and get some blow-by-blow, check out Matt Water’s review.
-Taped from NYC
-Your hosts are Kevin Kelly and Joe Dombrowski
-Video package hyping the three main matches on the card. Thanks to HDNet I’m sure, Ring of Honor has gotten pretty good at these.
-Kenny King (w/random bimbo) vs. Jay Briscoe
No Dave Prazak makes this an immediate thumbs up in my mind.  Feeling out process turns into a slap exchange. Off the ropes and a chop by Briscoes. Series of them. Whip into the corner and a clothesline. Follows through with a dropkick off the snapmare. Another chop in the corner. Irish whip and a dropkick. Clubbering blow to the back. Fireman’s carry and a slam down to the mat. Double stomp. King manages a hotshot. Clothesline for two. Series of right hands on Briscoe. Rip of the eyes. Whip across the corner. Follow-up clothesline. Cover for two. Knee placed in the back as the crowd endears themselves to the young lady at ringside. Leg lariat. Bodyslam and a springboard leg drop off the bottom rope. Straight right hand. Whip to the corner. Briscoe gets an elbow. King with a leaping leg lariat. Shotgun knees attempt. Briscoe drops King on his head. Referee checks on him. That was awkward.”You killed Kenny” chant. That’s cute. Briscoe wins a slugfest. Forearm off the ropes. King catches himself but Briscoe hits a spinebuster anyway. King out Briscoe’s clutches. Briscoe hits an atomic drop. King hits a leaping kick. Flatliner into the middle rope by Briscoe. Off the ropes with a huge boot. Rhett Titus comes down to the ringside area. King with a shot from behind. Briscoe ducks a clothesline and nails a dive. Back in the ring for a sunset flip attempt. King holds the ropes for two. Jaydriller attempt. Enziguri by King. Royal flush gets King a huge victory.
-Winner (s)/Time/Rating: Kenny King/7:37/**3/4
-Perfectly acceptable wrestling from these two and a solid start for the show. My only real issue was some of the awkwardness at times between the two. If King is to ever become a top level guy, he’s really got to become a lot smoother in the ring and avoid some of the moments like he had in the match where he appeared to get lost.
-Titus helps King continue a beatdown of Jay until Mark Briscoe makes the save. Redneck kung fu on both men. Leg lariat on Titus. Double shoulder tackle on King. We then go right into the next match.
-Mark Briscoe (w/Jay Briscoe) vs. Rhett Titus (w/Kenny King and random bimbo)
Mark goes to work right away. Series of strikes into a cover. Chop and a vertical suplex. Headbutt. Short clothesline. Titus over. Knee strike. Punch to the face. Mark counters another and goes for a cutter. Irish whip and a heel kick. Chinlock. Chop and a forearm by Mark. Up and over. Titus gets a nice dropkick. Stomps to the head. Knee drop off the bottom rope. Chop in the corner. Mark with a slap. Boot by Titus. Whip and a reverse elbow. Another whip and Mark is sent in chest first. Clothesline by Titus and a two count. Headbutt by Mark. Running boot by Titus. Forearms by Mark. Thumb to the eye and back rake by Titus. Snapmare into an applied headscissors. Chinlock. Elbows by Mark. Whip to the corner. Titus gets his boot up on a charge. Slap by Mark while Titus is on the top rope. Another boot to the face. Straightjacket neckbreaker. Punches in the corner. Moves to choking. Another forearm. Whip in the corner. Mark over. Headbutt to the midsection. Both men end up on the apron. Back and forth they go with strikes and kicks. Mark eventually knocks Titus down. Corkscrew senton on Titus to the floor. Well, that was dumb. Mark to the top rope. Right hands by Titus. Battle on the top. Titus sent off. He leaps up and nearly kills himself. Mark gets a super cutter, and now both men are down. Forearm exchange. Mark comes off the rope. Elbow by Titus. Mark with a t-bone suplex. Burning hammer attempt but Titus gets a roll-up for two. Backslide by Mark gets two. Up and Titus with another fireman’s carry roll through. More roll-ups by both men. Mark with a headlock. Sent off the ropes. They collide. King holds Mark . Jay rips him down. Superkick and a BURNING HAMMER by Mark. 1-2-3.
‘-Winner (s)/Time/Rating: Mark Brsicoe/9:31/**1/2
-Not much of a discernable difference between the two matches. This was fine for what it was as well. It was also nice to see this feud changed up a bit as we saw two singles matches instead of yet another tag team battle. Be interesting to see if King and Titus become a real threat to win the belts (perhaps from the Briscoes) in 2011.
-The Embassy (Erick Stevens and Necro Butcher w/Prince Nana and Ernestro Osiris) vs. Grizzly Redwood and Ballz Mahoney
Embassy rules in full effect here tonight. I can’t believe I’m watching Ballz Mahoney in a Pay-Per-View match in 2010. What wrestling company would be lame enough to do something like that? You’d have to have some hardcore justice to do something like that. Brawl to start. I know you might need to sit down after reading that last statement. Not much of a match, but I’ve certainly seen was expecting worse. This devolves into  a regular tag team match for whatever reason. I do love the spot where Stevens tosses a wrestler into the right hand of Necro. That’s literally it. Heat segment on Redwood. Rana into the middle turnbuckle. Ballz in with right hands. Give you one guess what the crowd chants. He breaks out a Regalplex on Necro and a spinebuster on Stevens. Things break down with all four men. We get duel punches in the corner, followed by stereo biting. Necro with a boot. Redwood counters a tiger driver into a DDT. Ballz sends Stevens out of the ring. He teases a dive. Redwood wants to be press slammed instead. Ballz obliges. Bodyslam on Necro. Frog splash gets Balls the- Nana interrupts the count. How is that not a DQ? Ballz goes for a bodyslam on Nana. Stevens hits gonorrhea to get the Embassy a win.
-Winner (s)/Time/Rating: The Embassy/7:45/*
-Sloppy match with a lame ending. Who could have possibly cared about anything involving the Embassy? Ditto for Redwood.
-Double Chain Match: Kevin Steen and Steve Corino vs. Colt Cabana and El Generico
This should be a big mess (in a good way) as this is one of the best feuds going in Ring of Honor at this point. There is a coin toss to see who’s tied up with who. Generico picks Steen of course. Whole lot of insanity contained with this match. Cabana and Generico send Steen and Corino outside of the ring. Back in for a series of jabs and elbows. Again to the outside. Double sliding dropkicks. The brawl shifts to the outside of the ring. Steen and Generico head back inside shortly. Generico wraps the chin on the top rope while ramming his head into the top turnbuckle. Meanwhile, Corino chokes Cabana. Generico heads outside as Cabana comes back in with Corino. Steen is a bloody mess. Generico bites the cut. I sure do hope they’re friends. Right hand sends Corino down back in the ring. Punches in the corner by Cabana. Out of the corner. Cabana uses the chain to punch Corino. Now both heels are bleeding. Duel punching by Generico and Cabana. Steen and Corino sent into each other. Generico wraps Steen up in the chain. Cabana hits a flying asshole, only to turn around and be nailed in the face by Corino. He nails Generico as well. Corino punches away at Cabana. Steen wipes blood on his hand and slaps Generico. Chops in the corner. Cabana is bleeding. This match is barely six minutes old. Steen chokes Generico while Corino takes Cabana back outside.  Generico tries fighting back to no avail. Steen wraps the chain around his knee. Applies pressure on Generico’s face. Twisting leg drop. Corino goes under the ring for plunder. Whip of the chain on Cabana. Kick and Steen goes for a pumphandle. Generico out of it. Superkick into a sharpshooter while using the chain of course. Cabana breaks the submission. Clothesline with the left arm by Corino. Cover on Generico. Corino places Cabana on the top rope and calls for a brainbuster. Steen tries helping his partner out. Generico crotches him and hits an exploder in the corner. Cabana knocks Corino off and hits a super flying asshole. That was different. All four men regroup. Generico with a clothesline that takes out both men. Whip in the corner and a clothesline by Cabana. Tree of woe . Cabana places the chair in front of Corino. Generico teases a coast-to-coast dropkick. He dives on Steen instead. Cabana with a running dropkick for two. Table time. Generico and Cabana set up a ringside table. Corino with punches. Generico looks to put Steen through the table. They battle on the apron. Steen places Generico on the top rope. Generico fights him off. Steen pulls Generico OFF THE TOP ROPE AND THROUGH THE TABLE! Corino puts Cabana in the ring. Punch exchange. Generico pulls Steen. Cabana punches Corino with the chain. Colby Corino comes down to ringside to unhook Generico and Steen. Uh oh. Steen from behind. Pumphandle neckbreaker. Steen and Corino tape Cabana up along the ropes as the crowd chants “Kill the kid.” Those classy New Yorkers. Todd Sinclair immediately tries to get the chain off the ropes. Superkick by Steen. Corino throws the Ballz Mahoney chair that was left at ringside away. Corino teases a chairshot. Generico comes from out of nowhere and kicks the chair into Corino’s face. Generico tries bailing Cabana out, but Steen pulls him out. Powerbomb into the apron. Corino sets Cabana up once again. Generico sacrifices himself by going in front of his partner. Half nelson suplexes on both Corino and Steen. Chair shot to the back by Steen. Cabana kicks away and avoids being hit with the chair. Generico pounces. Corino hits Generico with a weak  chair shot to the back. Crowd boos that one. Shot on Cabana. Corino sits down with Generico in the chair. Steen punches away at Cabana. Generico hits a half nelson suplex into the chair. Ouch. Toss of the chair into Steen. Steen spits in Generico. Another toss of the chair. Tope con helo. Cabana powerbombs Corino into the chair. Billy goat’s curse! Corino taps!
‘-Winner (s)/Time/Rating: Colt Cabana and El Generico/19:47/****
-Pretty unbelievable brawl as we’ve come to expect from these four. I think the chain and being in the Manhattan Center prevented this from being as good as the Chicago street fight, but this was still the best match of the show so far. A lot of great moments. And while the match was still fairly violent, I didn’t feel like any unnecessary chances were taken by any of the four men.
-Generico tries to end Steen once and for all. Corino’s interjection is met with a boot to the face. As Generico goes for a top rope brainbuster, Steen TAKES GENERICO’S MASK OFF! Wow. That was quite the moment. Cabana wraps Generico’s head with a towel. They leave. Steen brings his t-shirt to life by putting Generico’s mask on the chair and painting “MR. WRESTLER” on it. What a great moment for this feud. This part really should be replayed on HDNet for the next four weeks to build up the Final Battle match. Steen puts the mask on.
-Davey Richards interview. He makes it clear he’s not retiring. What I found most interesting about this interview was that Richards had all of these personal issues and clearly has gone through a lot, so what effect (if any) did these personal issues have to do with everything that went on all the way back in the beginning of the year with Evolve and Dragon Gate USA? I’m curious if this supposed retirement played into it. Just curious to see how this all shook out.
-ROH World Television Championship: Eddie Edwards vs. Shawn Daivari (w/Prince Nana and Ernesto Osiris)
Edwards is pretty over. Wish I could say the same for the Embassy. A fairly basic match coming off of intermission. At least Edwards is now defending the championship instead of having all these useless 10 minute hunts. Both guys can go, so this actually turns into a decent little match. Edwards’ shoulder meets the ring post to give Daivari the advantage. Control segment of course focuses on the shoulder. Daivari heads up. Edwards meets him. Superplex turns the advantage around. Overhead belly-to-belly throw. Daivari with a boot to the shoulder. Edwards with a dive. What an idiot. He’s got an injured shoulder. Why the hell would you dive? Dropkick off the top. Leg lariat follow-up. Whip by Edwards. Backpack slam countered. Lungblower off the second rope. F-5. Running kick as the announcers are quiet. You’d think ROH could fix this. But that would require effort. Tornado DDT by Daivari. Superkick by Edwards. Clothesline by Daivari. Dragon screw leg whip into the Achilles lock. Nana heads on the apron. Daivari nails his manager accidentally. Achilles lock and Daivari has no choice but to tap.
-Winner (s)/Time/Rating: STILL ROH Television champion- Eddie Edwards/7:42/**
-For a match coming off of intermission, this was alright. Edwards continues to establish a nice title reign after a rough start. Even if it is the Embassy, Edwards has at least gotten some clean wins recently. Daivari’s character is directionless, but his work remains solid. If only a company could get past his nationality and just focus on his in-ring work.
-Austin Aries vs. Christopher Daniels
With hindsight being what it is, Aries’ prematch promo about the hot up and comers combined with talk of stealing the show is very interesting. On the handshake, Aries immediately goes for an O’Connor roll and gets two. Another roll-up before Aries does some stalling. Side headlock. Shoulder tackle. Pair of armdrags into an armbar. Aries up and over. Back elbow off the second elbow. Back to the headlock. Headscissors by Daniels. Uh oh. Don’t…Aries misses the dropkick. Hip toss by Daniels. Another. Shoving match. Aries wants a handshake. Daniels brings him in and goes for an O’Connor roll of his own. Aries sends him over. Daniels guillotine and a springboard splash. Irish whip. Daniels shoulder tackle. Cartwheel followed by jabs. Irish whip and a bodyslam. Arabian moonsault. Forearms in the corner. Aries takes him up and over. Choking on the apron. Backbreaker on the middle rope. Shot off the top rope to the shoulders of Christopher Daniels. Chop. Daniels laid prone on the apron. Aries with a shot to the back. Back elbow in the ring. Daniels out of a hold. Aries with an STO. Pendulum elbow. Mongoloid New York fans are chanting like morons. Nervehold by Aries. Daniels punches out. Punch to the back. Goes for Angel’s Wings. Chop by Aries. Punch misses. Claps his hands against Daniels head. Does it again. Daniels with a back elbow and a clap of the hands. Neckbreaker. Announcers are talking about the main event for whatever reason. Daniels with a series of right hands. Clothesline misses. Blue thunder powerbomb. Knee to the gut by Aries. Daniels sends Aries out. Aries skins the cat. Daniels clotheslines him over again. Arabian moonsault misses. Missile dive by Aries hits. Aries to the top rope. Missile dropkick. Daniels gets his boot up as Aries goes for the running dropkick. Aries rammed head first into the buckle. Aries elbows out of the uranagi. STO by Daniels. Koji clutch. Again for the uranagi. Crucifix bomb by Aries. Brainbuster. 1-2-NO! Aries to the top. 450 hits. 1-2-NO! Aries is incredulous. Aries places Daniels on the top rope. Chop. Daniels shoves him off. Aries sends Daniels right leg over. Both men battle. Daniels crotches Aries on the top rope. Lock the arms. SUPER ANGEL’S WINGS! Daniels gets the three count.
-Winner (s)/Time/Rating: Christopher Daniels/13:08/***1/2
-Very good wrestling match that the crowd missed because they were too busy chanting. You get what you pay for with Aries and Daniels. They’re professional enough to have good wrestling matches without doing wacky stuff and taking all kinds of stupid chances.
-Non-title: Kings of Wrestling (Chris Hero and Claudio Castagnoli w/Shane Hagadorn)(ROH World Tag Team Champions) vs. The World’s Greatest Tag Team (Sheldon Benjamin and Charlie Haas)
Remember when Benjamin was going to be the next big thing in WWE? TWGTT seems genuinely excited to be in the building and simply having a wrestling match. As big as Hero and Claudio are, it’s amazing to see a tag team bigger than them in Ring of Honor. Shoving match before the bell rings. Referee Paul Turner doesn’t lose control. Amazing.  Benjamin and Claudio start. Immediate lock-up and they go around the ring. Slap by Benjamin. Uppercut by Claudio. Goes for a vertical suplex. Benjamin gets one of his own. Tag to Hero. Feeling out process. Haas tags in. Sends Hero in the corner. Chops. Hero with a knee. Chop no sold. Tag to Claudio. Roll-up for two. Haas uses mat wrestling! Claudio to the ropes. Slap exchange. Kick by Haas. Again, Claudio is sent into the top turnbuckle. Fireman’s carry takeover by Haas. Series of armdrags. Benjamin back in. Claudio counters a wristlock. Benjamin bounces off the ropes and gets an armdrag. Kick by Claudio. Whip to the corner. Benjamin stand right up on a monkey flip. Claudio goes high on a monkey flip by Benjamin. Hero in. Boots by KOW on both Haas and Benjamin. Haas sent off the apron. KRS 1 attempt. Haas and Benjamin nearly get their double team move. Champions flee the ring. Benjamin lifts Claudio into his corner and Haas tags in. European uppercut exchange. Kick by Claudio. Hard whip in the corner. Hero is elevated by Claudio for a senton. Hero hits a boot to the side of Haas’ face. Make a wish. European uppercut by Claudio. Choking. Hero with another boot to the side of the head. Cover for two.  Headlock. Armdrag by Haas. Clothesline by Hero. Elbow drop by Claudio. Knees to the back. Modified chinlock. Knee to the gut. Haas charges and eats boot. Comes back with an exploder. Benjamin hot tag. Hero low bridges. Very unique way keeping a heat segment going. Hero sends Benjamin into the barricade before sending him back in the ring. Deadlift gutwrench suplex by Claudio. Strike exchange in the corner. Claudio comes out the winner. Whip in the corner. Powerslam for two. Double whip in the corner as Hero is now legal. Boot to the side of Benjamin’s face. Cravat. Drives knees into the head of Benjamin. Claudio sends Benjamin into the turnbuckle. Series of kicks. Hero in with kicks of his own. Choking by Claudio. Cravat and more knee strikes by Hero. Benjamin battles out.  Punch exchange. Hero with a kick. Tag to Claudio. Double vertical suplex turned into a neckbreaker by Benjamin. Haas gets the crowd behind his partner. Benjamin battles Claudio as best he can. Kicks him away. Tag to Haas. Headscissors on Claudio. Dropkick on Hero. Clothesline on Hero. Boot and release belly-to-belly suplex on Claudio. Rolling German suplexes. Haas slingshots Claudio right into the waiting arms of Benjamin. Samoan drop. Hero breaks the count. Haas sent flying to the barricade. Jawbreaker by Benjamin on Hero. Benjamin with a right on Claudio. Up and over. Claudio sends Benjamin flying… right into Hero’s elbow. Wow. Elbow to the back of the neck by Hero. Running forearm. Benjamin with a leaping kick. Tag to Haas. And now it’s time. Benjamin leaps over Haas for a splash on Hero’s back. VINTAGE TWGTT. Haas of Pain attempt. Back drop on Claudio. Hero with a roaring elbow. Claudio tags and heads up top. Haas joins him. Hero with a shot to the back. Electric chair position. Haas deposits Hero over. Flying headbutt. Benjamin LEAPS to the top rope and tosses Claudio over his head. Amazing. Haas of Pain submission hold. Shane Hagadorn on the apron. Hero uses the loaded elbow pad on Haas. Puts Claudio on top. Referee counts three.
-Winner (s)/Time/Rating: Kings of Wrestling/20:43/****
-This was like a revelation. Haas and Benjamin got to showcase their skills as a team. They weren’t restricted by WWE. No gimmicks. No goofy comedy. These guys showed more personality and fire in 20 minutes than they did in their last three years of wrestling in WWE. This was a very different style of match than we’re used to seeing in Ring of Honor. Benjamin and Haas are more polished than a lot of indy wrestlers, and it showed in their work as they were far smoother than even a lot of wrestlers on the Ring of Honor roster. I was worried about them not caring or half-assing it. My fears were alleviated early. A wonderful performance by Haas and Benjamin.  I thought it was really great except for the ending. If Ring of Honor had any inkling TWGTT would be back, it doesn’t make sense to have them lose here in a non-title match. Honestly, I’d rather have just had KOW defending the belts here, winning by nefarious, then having TWGTT earn their way to another title match. And if Haas and Benjamin weren’t going to be booked again, at least KOW could say they defended their belts another high caliber team.
-Brawl continues after the match as Claudio and Benjamin battle. Hero goes for the loaded elbow pad again. Benjamin and Haas get stereo German suplexes on KOW as the “Please come back” chants begin. They lay in a whoopin on Hagadorn, who’s left in the ring. Benjamin takes Hagadorn’s pants off and begins whipping him with his own belt. Haas comes off the top with an elbow drop to the groin.
-ROH World Championship: Tyler Black (champion) vs. Roderick Strong (w/Truth Martini) (Special ringside referee: Terry Funk)
Incredible how Funk was the special referee for the match. I’d actually forgotten until this second viewing. Jim Cornette joins Kevin Kelly and at ringside. He’s better than any announcer I’ve heard this year: WWE, TNA, or any indy. Quick feeling out process leads to an exchange of nearfalls. Leg lariat sends the champion to the floor. Chops by Strong. Black sends Strong into the barricade. Fireman’s carry slam on the apron. Back into the ring. Black covers for two. Punches to the face. Bodyslam. He flips the fans off but misses a boot. Nearfall for each man. Chop by Strong. Off the ropes and a dropkick by Black. Chinlock. Gordbuster by Strong. Clothesline misses. O’Connor roll by Black. Belly-to-back suplex for two. Black kicks Strong away. Strike exchange. Black goes to the eyes. Black chokes Strong in the corner. Boots. Snapmare and a kick to the back. Stomp to the face. Black gets himself all fired up and flips the fans off again. Back elbow by Strong. Boot and an enziguri. Jumping knee strike. Strong chops. Whip in the corner. Off the ropes with a forearm. Clothesline. Falcon arrow for two. Strong goes for a backbreaker. Black out of it. Side suplex by Strong. Strong butterflies the arm. Black comes from behind. Roaring elbow by Strong. Black hits a gutbuster. Black says you can’t see him and applies an STFU. Amazing how the ROH fans in NYC booed the bajesus out of him, and the AAW fans cheered him when he did the “You can’t see me.” Strong out with a kick. Black up and over. Enziguri. Pele kick out of the corner. Black places Strong on the top rope. Goes for a superplex. Hits it. Rolls over. Strong twists him and hits a backbreaker. 1-2-NO! Strong hits a gutbuster. Off the ropes. Black ducks. Sinclair eats a sick kick in the face. Black superkicks Strong. Everyone except terry Funk is up. Funk sends Sinclair out of the ring and takes over officiating duties for the rest of the match. Black nails Strong with the book of truth. GOD’S LAST GIFT! 1-2-NOOO! Black places Strong on the top rope. Strong elbows him down. Black leaps over and kicks Strong in the chest. Tree of woe. Black double stomps him… NO! STRONGHOLD! Black crawls to the ropes. Black roll-up for two. Superkick by Strong. 1-2-NOO! Both men are down. Christian Able and Josh Raymond try to interfere. Funk fends them off. Martini in the ring next. Funk from behind. Uh oh. Martini begs for mercy. Funk whips Martini up and out of the ring. Strong with a running kick. Superkick by Black. Bucklebomb. Strong leaps up. Black bucklebombs again. Superkick. Another superkick. Another superkick after Strong spits in his face. Phoenix splash misses. Enziguri by Strong. Backbreaker. Gutbuster. Sick kick. 1-2-3! NEW CHAMPION!
-Winner (s)/Time/Rating: NEW ROH world champion- Roderick Strong/15:03/***3/4
-This felt like a 25 minute match done in 15 minutes. Not to say that the match was bad, but it could have benefitted from a little bit more time and a bit of a feeling out process. Lots of craziness involved. Too much if you ask me. I very much feel like too much went on in a short amount of time, and the fans had a hard time processing it all. Still, the right man won, and Strong at least got one shining moment in the sun as ROH world champion.
-Black refuses a handshake and flips everyone off on the way out of the door. As Strong celebrates, a familiar theme song starts. HOMICIDE comes out to confront Roderick Strong. And we’re out. That’s what they call a tease in the wrestling business.
-Final Thoughts: I thought this show came off a little better on second viewing and on DVD. If you don’t have a solid internet connection and didn’t order the show on Go Fight Live, I’d say this is an easy recommendation. However, if you did order the show on iPPV, it’s not worth getting the DVD. The special features involving Strong and Black after the match aren’t really worth spending an extra  20 bucks. Nonetheless, a very good show.
This is going to be the last ROH DVD review I post during 2010. I will start out 2011 reviewing the October Dayton and Chicago shows before of course moving on to covering the rest of 2010 as well. Matt Waters will do a year end column discussing ROH during the 2010: the best, the worst, and whatever came in between. I’ll be focusing my efforts on year end AAW and PWG DVD columns. Until next year, have a holiday season and be sure to keep up with Pro Wrestling Ponderings throughout the month of December for all kinds of end of the year coverage.
