-Rich Swann vs. AR Fox

Match in Five Words or Less: Faster Than A Video Game

Match Highlights: These is a rematch from both Evolve 7 and 8. Both men show off their quickness early. Swann flips over Fox and hits a sweet dropkick. Right hand in the corner. He goes up and hits ten more. Hard chop. Fox goes over on a suplex. Series of counters. Fox hits a knee and spinning fishermen’s buster. He misses a kick flip. Swann hits a standing moonsault to the floor… barely. Fox hits a stunner. Running clothesline. He flips up and over for a dropkick. Cannonball senton NAILS Swann in the corner. Wow. Chinlock as everyone gets to breathe. Swann reaches the bottom rope. Shoulder blocks in the corner by Fox. Bodyslam into a split-legged moonsault. Snapmare into the chinlock. Crowd gets behind Swann. Shot to the back and cross body on the back of Swann’s neck. Swann with right hands. Immediate flatliner spikes Swann. Charge misses. Swann kicks Fox while on the top rope. Fox hits a reverse 450 to the floor on Swann. My God. Hard strikes to the chest. Fox misses a leg drop off the top while Swann was prone on the frame. Handspring Laurinitis crusher gets two and the crowd is deeply into this one. Frog splash for a nearfall. Nearfall exchange. Swann hits a superkick. Fox hits a bicycle kick on a prone Swann. Lo Mein Pain gets Foxxy the victory.

Match Analysis: I know DG USA’s weekend technically started the night before, but you are not going to start off Wrestlemania weekend any more spectacularly than these two. What an incredible back and forth contest between two of the most innovative wrestlers in the world. Fox is clearly being positioned as Rob Van Dam 2.0 (The Whole Foxin Show nickname and use of the split-legged moonsault), and it’ll be interesting to see how he continues to grow as a high flyer. The moveset is there. The crowd connection isn’t nearly as much. Swann had the crowd behind him for the most part, but Fox definitely can get the crowd behind him with great performances such as these.

Winner (s)/Time/Rating: AR Fox/11:00/***1/2

-The current Open the United Gate tag team champions, Cima and Ricochet, come out. Cima is injured and will not be able to defend the titles. He apologizes for not being able to compete and says he loves DG USA and the United States. Apparently, it’s his neck that’s injured. I believe this has given him a lot of trouble in the past. The titles are to be vacated. Chuck Taylor comes out to celebrate since he thinks the belts will now be Ronin’s. Johnny Gargano looks less than pleased. Taylor tells the Spiked Mohicans to hand over the belts now. Gargano says he doesn’t want to win the belts this way. He talks about earning the Open the Freedom Gate championship. Instead of cheating the fans and the team, they’ll show they’re the best team in the world. Masato Yoshino volunteers to be Ricochet’s partner. Makes sense since they’re in the same Dragon Gate Japan stable. The belts are put in the middle of the ring. And apparently we have a new tag team match. Ronin vs. World-1 International. No one will shake poor Johnny Gargano’s hand.

-The Scene(Scott Reed and Caleb Konley w/Larry Dallas and Arena Chick girls) vs.  Bobby Fish and Tommy Dreamer

Match in Five Words or Less: The Odd Couple

Match Highlights: Dallas calls Fish out for originally not having a partner. I’m assuming this was Uhaa Nation’s spot, but instead we get Tommy Dreamer. Dreamer and Fish would make for a great wacky sitcom. Larry Dallas as their partying landlord would really complete the concept. Dreamer and Fish hip toss each member of the Scene. Dreamer hits a pumphandle slam on Konley. Crossface. Fish kicks him in the face. Double team elbow drop on Reed and they continue working Reed over. Fish hits a slingshot senton for two. Dropkick off the ropes. Konley gets decked. Fish fakes a dive. Dreamer clotheslines the Scene. Konley crotches Dreamer on the guard rail. Dallas and Sassy Stephie drive the rail into Dreamer’s chest. Fish chases them about. Scene go back to work on Dreamer. The crowd informs Reed he has a stupid haircut. Best chant ever. Why? Cause it’s true. Dreamer gets a boot up on Konley and drives him face first in the middle buckle. Fish and Reed in. Gut punch. Kick combination. One more to the head. Konley eats some to the hamstrings and gets leg whipped. Fish turns back his attention to Reed. Leg submission. Konley breaks the hold. Dreamer applies a Texas cloverleaf. Dallas gets dragged in the ring. Stephie attacks Dreamer. Uh oh. Amber O’Neal goes for the save. Dreamer kisses them both. O’Neal runs out of the ring appalled. Dreamer piledrives Stephie. Crowd was into it so I’m less inclined to criticize. Backcracker by Konley. Fish Hook leg submission gets the victory for the makeshift team.

Match Analysis: For the second match on the card, this was all right. Dreamer was a pleasant surprise for the live crowd, and he delivered a few token spots to make them happy. Fish is going to be a tremendous player for Evolve and DG USA. He has a unique style that could fit in with the rest of the company. The problem I see is with the Scene. Are we supposed to take them seriously, or are they going to be what amounts to a jobber tag team? I’d like to think Reed and Konley have potential, but they’re never going to achieve anything above a certain level if they’re with Larry Dallas and all the women..

Winner (s)/Time/Rating: Tommy Dreamer and Bobby Fish/8:40/*1/2

-Shelly Martinez gets into it with Dreamer now. He doesn’t even kiss her… but Martinez kisses him. Dreamer spanks her. Well, that was something.

-Sami Calihan vs. BxB Hulk

Match in Five Words or Less: Selling. Hooray!

Match Highlights: Calihan attacks even before the bell rings. Hard bodyslam right into the corner. Calihan immediately twists Hulk about as Leonard tries to make sense of the new group known as Mad Blankey. Calihan works Hulk’s leg. Not sure why considering Hulk won’t sell. Headbutt. Chop along the ropes. Calihan ties Hulk in the corner and delivers some shots to the legs. Double stomp off the middle rope. Back to the chop. Hulk cartwheels over and hits a series of kicks. Told you he wouldn’t sell. Stomps in the corner. Cravat and some knee strikes. Snapmare into a dropkick. More kicks send Calihan crumpling to the floor. Exploder and he goes over to get the two count. Elbows. Christina Von Eerie appears in the entrance way to watch. Kicks to the chest. Calihan stares at him. He goes after the referee. Hulk continues kicking him. Calihan wants him to bring it. After flipping him off, Hulk takes control. Huge enziguri. Charge misses. Calihan hits one of his own. Death valley driver. Shotgun splash off the ropes gets two. Calihan hits a hard kick and diving lariat. Tope suicida. Chop sends Hulk into the front row.   Hulk hits a kick to the side of the head. Elbow. Springboard leg lariat connects. Hulk puts Calihan on the top rope. Calihan comes back with headbutts. Sunset bomb blocked. Calihan superkicks Hulk’s knee. Hulk falls. Calihan applies a half crab. He transitions into a cloverleaf. Hulk reaches the bottom rope. Hulk blocks a vertical suplex. Mouse. Sweep of the leg. Standing splash gets two. Hulk falls off the top rope as his leg buckles. Did he just sell the leg? I don’t think that was a screw-up. Stretch muffler. Hulk rolls him up for two. First Flash blocked. Calihan hits a basement superkick as Von Eerie comes on the apron. She spits wine in his face. Hulk hits EVO and First Flash for the victory.

Match Analysis: Hulk actually selling his injured limb for once was quite the sight to behold. Part of the match felt awkward since these two are both technically heels. However, I smell a full-on face turn for Calihan once the AR Fox feud ends. It’s lunacy at this point to deny Calihan’s popularity in indy wrestling. I’d rather have him work face since a lot of his more annoying habits get toned down under these circumstances. If nothing else, this was a good solid match to perhaps start an angle between Mad Blankey and the D.U.F. It will be interesting to see if D.U.F get a girl to counter Von Eerie. I’m a bit surprised she’s with Hulk and Tozawa considering she literally fits in with the D.U.F look and attitude.

Winner (s)/Time/Rating: BxB Hulk/11:24/***1/4

-Calihan talks about not trusting women. He shifts his attention to the matter at hand the next night, Sabu. He repeats his name a bunch of times for “effect.” He calls Sabu worthless and an extreme loser. Lights go off. Unlike Ft. Lauderdale’s brownout, this was actually supposed to happen as the lights come back on. Hey, it’s Sabu. He made it! Series of clotheslines. Drop toehold and a camel clutch. Arik Cannon comes out to hit Sabu with a PBR. Pinkie Sanchez is out as well. Guess we have our next match…

-Street Fight: D.U.F (Arik Cannon and Pinkie Sanchez) vs. Sabu and Jon Davis.

Match in Five Words or Less: Useless Violence

Match Highlights: Cannon hits a neckbreaker on Sabu in the ring as Davis press slams Sanchez on the edge of the ring. Davis chokes Sanchez in the ring and then slams him over. Sabu and Cannon brawl on the outside. Davis has a bucklebomb blocked. Low dropkick by Sanchez. Running kick to the mouth. Knee strike. Davis hits a leaping leg lariat. Sabu spikes Cannon in the ring. He threatens the referee as well. Cannon is bleeding. Sabu has a chair, not a folding one either. Sabu continues using the spike. Air Sabu hit. More spike shots. He tosses it into the crowd. Cannon catches Sabu in the corner and hits a Total Anarchy. Davis breaks the cover even before a count. Chop by Davis. Facebuster into the knee. Spinebuster. Running knees. Sanchez breaks the count. Sabu tries setting the table up but Cannon prevents that. Flying hip attack by Sanchez on Davis. Stereo sentons on Davis. Cannon DVDs Sanchez on top of Davis. Sabu breaks the count and sets the table up. Cannon rams Sabu into the top turnbuckle. Davis sent into Sanchez. Davis sends him collapsing into the floor. Lariat on Cannon. Sabu sets Cannon up on the table. Pounce by Davis on Sanchez. Sabu puts Cannon through the table. Three Seconds Around the World and Sanchez is done. Sabu and Davis pick up the win.

Match Analysis: At least this wasn’t as annoying as the Freedom Fight brawl. It was short, to the point, and set up the next night’s events reasonably well. I’ll be happy when Sabu is done with DG USA altogether since I don’t see how he’s added to the product at all. Sanchez and Cannon work hard, but they need some character development outside of being Calihan’s lackeys. Both guys have a lot of personality but never get to show it.

Winner (s)/Time/Rating: Sami Calihan/7:12/**

-Calihan assaults Sabu from behind and even nails him with a bottle. The bottle attacks really need to stop. Someone, wrestler or fan, is going to get hurt. He gets on the live microphone and delivers one more message before the following night’s match. He threatens to end his career. Meh.

-Masaaki Mochizuki (w/Cima) vs. Akira Tozawa (w/Christina Von Eerie and BxB Hulk)

Match in Five Words or Less: Amazing

Match Highlights: The crowd chants for Tozawa even before he officially comes out. Yup, I’d say he’s over. Feeling out process. Mochizuki breaks clean while Tozawa refuses. Mochizuki forgoes a test of strength and kicks Tozawa. Back and forth they go. Kick to the midsection. Kicks but Tozawa gets out of the way. Dropkick by Tozawa. Leg sweep and running kick to the back by Mochizuki. Tozawa stalls for a bit. He crawls back inside and proceeds to get kicked again. Bodyslam and kick to the back by Mochizuki. Kicks to the leg. Kneebreaker and another hard kick to the back of the leg. Grapevine. Tozawa eventually reaches the rope, but not before getting booted and slapped. Tozawa sent into the buckle. Right hands. Hard whip. Tozawa gets a boot. No sell by Mochizuki. He runs and hits a divorce court. Now a figure four armbar. Tozawa reaches the rope. Mocizuki kicks away in the corner. Series of counters. Mochizuki changes his mind and applies a fujiwara armbar. Tozawa grabs the rope and heads outside. Mochizuki gives chase and continues kicking. Tozawa sends Mochizuki into the post. Back in the ring. He goes for a German suplex on the apron. This gets blocked. Bicycle kick blocked. Divorce court into the apron and another kick. Tozawa desperately grabs the bottom rope. Slaps from Mochizuki. Back drop driver by Tozawa as he comes back. Tope suicida. A second is blocked with a kick. Tozawa bicycle kicks him and hits the second tope suicida. Back in the ring. Stomp to the neck. Cravat. Snapmare and dropkick. Bodyslam and standing cannonball splash. Head first into the buckle and choking. Tozawa screams at the ref as Von Eerie chokes Mochizuki. Front facelock. Elbow strike. Forearms by Tozawa. Mochizuki goes for a tombstone piledriver. Tozawa reverses into one of his own and gets two. Camel clutch. Kicks to Mochizuki. Kick exchange. Guess who wins?   Tozawa with shotgun chops in the corner. Absolutely amazing. Right hand. Mochizuki then lays Tozawa with one kick. Wow. Reverse of the whip. Boot. Tozawa hits a bicycle kick. Mochizuki with a running kick. Tozawa in the tree of woe. Kick in the ear. Tozawa placed between the top and middle turnbuckle. Running knees. Running kick gets two. Twister reversed. Rana and a roll over into the shining wizard by Tozawa. Forearm. Wizard blocked. Leg sweep. Kicks to the head by Mochizuki. Another incredible exchange ends with a release German superplex by Tozawa. Tozawa has a suplex blocked. Kick to the back of the head. Series of counters into a German suplex. Mochizuki counters into a kimura and then the cross armbreaker. Tozawa hits a deadlift German suplex. 1-2-NOOOOO! The crowd comes to their feet and I don’t blame them. Tozawa tries locking the arms. Bicycle kick. Slap exchange. They kick each other. German blocked. Series of kicks and knees. 1-2-NO! Mochizuki hits Sankakugeri to the face to pick up the victory at last in a phenomenal contest.

Match Analysis: The exchanges. The back and forth. The incredible chemistry. People have accused Mochizuki of half-assing it in the states. Well, he didn’t do that here.  Something about Tozawa seems to bring the best out of him these last few months. A fantastic showcase. I’m not sure this was better than their Dream Gate match, but they sure delivered a very memorable match that may serve as the first match of the year contender from this Wrestlemania weekend. I loved how Tozawa’s neck work was a consistent pattern of the match. I also appreciated Mochizuki working the leg before transitioning into working the arm and sticking with it.

Winner (s)/Time/Rating: /19:51/****1/4

-Von Eerie has a message from Mad Blankey. It’s a nut shot to Mochizuki. This sets up the next night’s six man tag. At least they’re trying to put an angle behind it instead of just having the six guys go bonkers. Not that there’s anything wrong with that but a little storytelling goes a long way.

-Johnny Vandal vs. Samuray Del Sol

Match in Five Words or Less: Some Mystery Luchador

Match Highlights: Del Sol is the mystery luchador Dragon Gate has been advertising. If nothing else, DG USA gets credit for immediately putting him over Masato Yoshino in Hollywood the previous night. This is our first time to see Del Sol in DG USA that’s not a preshow contest with Gran Akuma and Silas Young. Lucha armdrag and huge dive. Springboard splash. Strikes in the corner. Vandal hits an awkward looking spinebuster. Running splash to the middle rope. Running  boot to the side of the face. Forearm. Del Sol hits a boot. Up and over. Kick to the midsection by Vandal. TKO and to the top he goes. Double knees hit. Chops along the ropes. Del Sol leaps and hits a springboard reverse rana for the win.

Match Analysis: This was specifically designed to showcase Del Sol’s speed and abilities. Vandal didn’t come off like a total jobber since he got some nice offense in, but this was Del Sol’s match. Not sure how well Del Sol is going to perform under the bright lights but I’m interested to see why DG USA sees so much in him. After watching a number of his matches in AAW, I think he’s got some potential but he seems to hit moves upon moves for no real reason. We’ll see where Del Sol fits into DG USA faction wise as well. World-1 International seems to make the most sense.

Winner (s)/Time/Rating: Samuray Del Sol/3:16/*

-Low Ki vs. PAC

Match in Five Words or Less: Low Ki Wins, Shocking

Match Highlights: People can say whatever they want about Ki, but he’s got a star presence that so many other independent stars lack. Show of respect as they start out basic. Ki crawls underneath and goes to the top rope. Warrior’s Way hits. Ki gets the victory

Match Analysis: These two certainly put in a great effort. Not as crazy as one might think but they definitely left a lot of room for a potential rematch. Loved the exchanges and the “Can you top this?” feel the contest had. I loved how they delivered a more subtle match without having a lot of crazy nearfalls and balls to the walls action.

Winner (s)/Time/Rating: Low Ki/23:46/***3/4

Ki puts PAC over after the match. He talks about the match being championship quality and calls out every member of the DG USA and Evolve roster. He wants another championship for Evolve. Way to piss on the Open the Freedom Gate title there dude. Ki talks about wrestling for the fans. Hooray. We all love wrestling!

-Open the United Gate Championship: World-1 International (Masato Yoshino and Ricochet) vs. Ronin (Johnny Gargano [Open the Freedom Gate Champion] and Chuck Taylor)

Torbelino hits on Taylor. Sol Naciante! Taylor taps and Yoshino wins his 17th DG USA match with this hold. That’s unreal.

Match Analysis: Great way to cap the night. Gargano didn’t show any ring rust but unfortunately had his nose busted hardway early in the match. Poor guy can’t survive a match against Ricochet without suffering an injury. Taylor may have had his best performance in the promotion at this point. Not sure about giving Yoshino the United Gate titles again but at least the faction configuration makes sense. Very enjoyable main event and a perfect way to cap the night. They also did an effective job keeping Gargano and Yoshino separated but still managed to build heat for the next night’s match.

Winner (s)/Time/Rating: NEW Open the United Gate Champions-World-1 International /19:42/****

-But we’re not done yet. The great Miami fans actually chant “Everyone!” I haven’t mentioned them very much, but the crowd was really great. Maybe one of the best in DG USA history. They were into everything and chanted for everyone. Cima wants to shake Gargano’s hand. Taylor decks Cima and superkicks Gargano. Crowd boos him big time. I guess that was an effective heel turn. Everyone in the ring is shocked by Taylor’s actions, even Rich Swann. Yoshino declares his intention to become a double champion.

The Verdict: Top to bottom, this may have been Dragon Gate USA’s strongest show in a long time. Great crowd plus great action equals a great show. I have a hard time thinking about anything on the show I actively disliked  with the exception of Sami Calihan’s in-ring talking. I loved the angle development and am very interested to see where Taylor goes from here. My concern is he becomes Christian to Gargano’s Edge, but I’m hopeful the Chucky T we’ve been waiting to see really break out into the main event can finally realize his full potential. Big time thumbs up for Open the Ultimate Gate. This show was worth the two dollars and would be worth the 14 dollars too. Highest recommendation to check out on WWN Live.
