CWF Mid-Atlantic Redemption
5/4/13
Mid-Atlantic Sportatorium
Gibsonville, NC
CWF returned to the Mid Atlantic Sportatorium for ‘Redemption’ on May 4th. Mid Atlantic Champion Arik Royal faced another in a long line of tough tests since winning the title in December. Zane Dawson stood in the champs way to begin his fifth month as champion. In addition to that The Youth Movement in the Aftermath are still looking to make an impact at anyone’s expense, Their former leader is determined to make sure they don’t starting with the Apprentice Chet Sterling. Also in action CWF Mid Atlantic Tag champs The All Stars, The KillBillies,Chase Dakota, Andrew Everett Cross & more!! We’ll take a look at full results & review of this show & remember the following is….
#1MansOpinion
Footage is shown of “The 1st” Ric Converse arriving & he discusses the dissension of The Aftermath & how he will take them apart 1 by 1 starting with Chet Sterling tonight.
Chase Dakota vs “SouthPaw” Aric Andrews
One half of the former tag team champion KillBillies was lead to the ring for singles action by his partner “Honky Kong” Aric Andrews & manager “Barefoot” Bobby Jo Neill. Chase Dakota, the only member of the BlackWatch in action on this event has been riding a high lately with the huge win over Eddie Edwards back in February & a big tag victory alongside Joe Black last month. Andrews showed he can go in singles or tag action keeping up with the technically sound Dakota & in the end the Southpaw pulled off the win with a Russian Leg Sweep.
#1MansOpinion: Solid, quick opener. A bit surprised to see the tag mainstay Andrews get the win over Dakota who has made great strides in his singles career. Both men looked good here & I’d like to see this parlay into Killbillies vs BlackWatch with a tag shot on the line. ** 1/4
Mecha Mercenary w/ Cecil Scott vs Aaron Biggs
Cecil Scott lead his Mecha Mercenary to the ring for a rematch from the ‘Madness in Any Direction’ ippv in March. Biggs, the newest CWF training school graduate made his debut against Mecha there and fell short. The rookie, Biggs came straight at the biggest man in CWF and they brawled on the floor. Biggs had control before he caught a big boot from Mecha as Cecil held his foot. Mecha brutalized Biggs & Cecil Scott took every opportunity to take a shot but the rookie wasn’t going away as easy as last time. Mecha hit a huge elbow drop but again Biggs kicked out & hit a running kick & big splash nearly ending the match but Mecha got his foot on the rope. Biggs then shocked the whole building as he SLAMMED MECHA!! Biggs then positioned Mecha on the top & hit a nasty looking DVD but time had expired and no man would get his hand raised in this one, though Aaron Biggs proved he wasn’t going anywhere.
#1MansOpinion: Hard hitting brawl between two of the biggest men in the CWF. Biggs is still learning & had a much better match here than in his debut. Mecha is an imposing force & just a classic “big man” in the style of Vader. These two have done a nice job building their feud. ** 1/2
Nick Richards, the man who turned on & effectively killed Fatback Enterprises is shown on the video screen demanding protection from Donnie Dollars & uninterrupted mic time. In the midst of talking, CWF owner & former founding member of Fatback, Brad Stutts asks for Richards feed to be cut & the show moves on.

“Honky Kong” Evan Banks vs Matty Denero
Another singles match for The Killbillies here as the big man Banks takes on the most energetic, unique & motivated young man in CWF Matty Denero. Right away we see a more focused, less comedic Denero who is also feeling the effect of Fatback Enterprises ending. Denero has recently said this is like a rebirth for him & this will be “The Summer of Matty” Banks who is always up for a party was having enough fun for both of them, dancing, faking out Denero on tests of strength and utilizing a life sized cardboard NASCAR cut out of Bobby Labonte which Denero promptly T-Bone suplexed! Banks then left the ringside area & returned with a HHH mask, accompanied by Bobby Jo Neill complete with a Stephanie McMahon wig! Banks hit a spinebuster, and went for the Pedigree but Matty D jackknifed over to get the pin. The hijinks continued after the match as a dance party to “Jump” by Kriss Kross broke out in memory of the late Chris Kelly. You’ll get a little of everything at the CWF Sportatorium.
#1MansOpinion: This was a lot of what you’d expect, craziness &  zany antics. The big surprise was the new attitude of Matty D. There’s no question the talent is there & with the new motivation, Denero may be tough to stop for anyone who tries to cool down The Summer of Matty D.  Strange? Out of Ordinary? Sure but this was entertaining as hell! Denero looks to be riding the NPWD momentum to his best year yet in CWF Mid-Atlantic. ** 3/4
Chet Sterling vs “The 1st” Ric Converse
Converse came out with a brand new attitude as the fans ingratiate themselves to him more & more each week. The former leader of The Aftermath went straight to work on Sterling sending him outside with a clothesline & chasing him around ringside. The youngster changed the pace of the match and hit a divorce court arm breaker and focused in on ending Converse’s planned destruction of his former group before it started.  Converse fought back with a pair of hard right crosses but Sterling caught him with a dropkick as he came off the top. The veteran wouldn’t be defeated on this night though as he fought back again hitting a Russian leg sweep and more brutal right crosses and blocked a middle rope spinning DDT countering with “The Richter Scale” to successfully take out the first member of The Aftermath.
#1MansOpinion: Really good match here. Converse is always beyond solid in the ring with so much history in the mid-Atlantic and Sterling looked impressive in the losing effort. The challenges will only get tougher from here for Converse as he looks to complete his goal. ***
CWF Mid-Atlantic Tag Titles Match

The All-Stars Goon Squad(Roy Wilkins & Walter Eaton) w/ Coach Gemini (c) vs Andrew Everett Cross & “Sho Smoove” Chris Lea
As the challengers made their way to the ring. Trevor Lee attacked Cross from behind with the TV title knocking him out cold and the champs took advantage essentially now having a handicap match. Chris Lea is an impressive and very athletic young man if you’ve never seen him & he fought back against both Eaton & Wilkins and hitting a big dive to the outside taking out both tag champs. The numbers game did catch up with Lea and the Goon Squad took over. Cross was making his way to his feet but Walter Eaton kicked him to the floor to preserve the numbers advantage for his team. Cross finally got back to the apron but was wobbly & Lea hesitated to tag him in. The tag champs again dropped Cross & continued their assault on Sho Smoove who fought back just as hard hitting a blue thunder bomb on Wilkins for a Nearfall & stacking both champions up hitting a “Superfly” style splash but Coach Gemini had the referee distracted. Walter Eaton recovered & hit Lea with one of the tag team titles picking up the win & securing the tag titles in Coach’s trophy case for awhile longer. *** 1/2
#1MansOpinion: I was hooked on the psychology & storytelling of this match right away.  The All Stars and Coach Gemini are one of if not my favorite tag team in the Carolinas. They are a true throwback to the great tag teams and manager combos of the 80s. Eaton & Wilkins have a chemistry that is always a pleasure to watch. As I said Sho Smoove is more impressive each time I see him and to have as little ring time under his belt he’s really impressive. This was a gutsy, crisp performance against two of CWF’s best. The former Chiva kid is one of the more well known Indy names of the past couple months and though he didnt have a big part in this match he is on a definite collision course with the man who unmasked him, CWF Mid Atlantic TV Champ Trevor Lee.

CWF Mid Atlantic TV Title  Match

Trevor Lee(c) vs Donnie Dollars
Trevor made fun of Andrew Everett Cross’ attempt at winning the YLC at Chikara the previous night & told Cross to watch him defend his title, on his show. Dollars obviously changed since the implosion of Fatback, came out stoically, no entrance music hardly any emotion. Lee hit a dropkick right away & controlled the early going until Dollars was able to take him outside but Lee hit a vicious running kick from the apron &  controlled most of the match using knee strikes, a gut wrench suplex and not giving Dollars a moment. Dollars did finally get an opening but went after Chet Sterling on the outside. Lee then went back to the kicks with chest kicks but Dollars shook them off & hit a body slam & leg drop for a Nearfall. Dollars was loading up for his big boot finish when Nick Richards picked his spot once again showing up & distracting Dollars who gave chase & was counted out.
#1MansOpinion: Lee is an impressive, young athlete who feels he was the breakout star of NPWD & CWF has a great feud building with he & the former Chiva Kid. Both are talents to watch for & I encourage you to check both out. Dollars looked as good as I’ve seen him here but has unfinished business elsewhere with Nick Richards. ***
“El Fuego” Jesse Ortega vs Lee Valiant
Former CWF champion Lee Valiant returned to the Sportatorium after falling short in his quest for a #1 contenders match last month. Brad Stutts who always does a phenomenal job ran down the history of Ortega & Valiant who had one of the hottest feuds in the promotions history.  The two men began feeling each other out, Valiant locked on a headlock which Ortega tried to counter several times but the former champ wouldn’t let go. Ortega finally went to an eye poke to turn the tide and the two just brawled back & forth. Ortega took over looking to punish Valiant with knees and strikes but again Valiant fought back. Ortega locked in a fujiwara armbar with just 2 minutes left, Valiant fought out & with about 90 seconds left Valiant hit “Sliced Bread” to pick up a hard earned victory.
#1MansOpinion: It’s clear how well these guys know each other that this isn’t close to their first time in a ring together. The familiarity these two had one with another produced a very nice match. Valiant has a true Redemption story you can get behind & seems to be in great shape as he makes another run in the Mid-Atlantic. Ortega I’m becoming more familiar with each show & can say he’s a technically proficient veteran as well as the meanest, nastiest man in the Sportatorium. *** 1/4
CWF Mid-Atlantic Championship

Arik Royal (c) vs Zane Dawson
If you haven’t heard either of these names do yourself a favor & check them out. Two of the biggest, baddest big men I’ve seen on the independent scene. Right away this had the “Big Match Feel” and before introductions could be made a brawl broke out in the midst of this main event. Royal controlled early, establishing dominance in “his house” but Dawson ran the champ into the ring post & turned the tide. Neither man could keep the advantage long as they went back & forth with Royal hitting a spin kick & Dawson responding with a “hot shot”. The Sportatorium seemed stunned as Dawson delivered on his promise to “kick the door in”. There is zero quit in the Mid-Atlantic Champion who has looked phenomenal since winning the title 5 months ago, Royal took the beating of his life on this night & showed an even stronger resiliency than we’ve seen from him before. The champion made another comeback hitting a T-Bone Suplex & going for a spear but Dawson side stepped him & tossed him outside. Dawson then followed the champ & littered the ring with steel chairs as the match completely broke down & was thrown out. Zane was not finished however as he hit a big lariat & forced the referee to count Royal down, taking the CWF championship until The Killbillies came out to check on the champion & give the belt back to the deserved champion, Arik Royal. This one ended as intense as it began with Royal & Dawson brawling through the lobby & out the front door of the Sportatorium. This is far from over! *** 1/2
#1MansOpinion: If ever two talents can make you feel the emotion of a match from start to finish their job is done & done well. Royal & Dawson did just that this whole match. The vile, hate filled promos they directed at one another were backed up tenfold in this clash & I’d ask you to follow the link at the end of this column to see this match & entire show for FREE! You will see two of THE best big men that you may have never heard of battle it out in a brawl that even JR would call a true “Slobberknocker”
#1MansFINALOpinion: Few promotions if any tell a story like CWF Mid-Atlantic. You’ll be immediately hooked into the feuds like those between Dawson & Royal, Trevor Lee & Andrew Everett Cross & will feel compelled to choose your side in the battle between Ric Converse & The Aftermath. CWF offers the perfect mix of old school wrestling that’s rarely seen today, combined with the excitement of “sports entertainment” minus the over the top antics you get from the “big boys”. Each event CWF Mid-Atlantic puts on sufficiently prepares you for the next event & with 36-48 shows per year there is plenty of action to keep you entertained & much more to come!
Overall: 7/10
