PWA Black Label “Colosseum Night 1” Recap and Review

Night 1 includes the first round of the Colosseum tournament and a tag team gauntlet. This year, for the first time the PWA championship will be defended throughout the tournament, starting with the current champion, Jessica Troy, facing off against longtime friend, Charli Evans. In non-tournament action Jimmy Townsend will face off against WWE star Grayson Waller.

Opening Round Match: Big Fudge def Ricky Utomi

There is a big reaction for Big Fudge. If you have never seen Big Fudge before he kind of looks like Los Ice Cream from Chikara, but with a bar of chocolate instead of a cone. Fudge has fun with his entrance, but gets serious once the bell rings.

Fudge hits a dive to the outside, then tries to powerbomb Ricky onto the floor from the apron, but Ricky holds onto the ropes and hits Fudge with a leg drop on the apron. Ricky hits Fudge with a DDT on the floor, but can’t keep Fudge down. The crowd is very loud and hyping up Fudge. Ricky hits a Gory Buster into a knee followed by a shining wizard, but Fudge kicks out. Fudge hits a butt punch and air raid crash, but Ricky kicks out at two. Fudge hits a choke slam for the win to a huge reaction to the crowd. This was a very competitive and fun match to open the weekend.

Opening Round Match: Tommy Knight def Lena Kross

This is a battle between two powerhouses. While this last match was a little fun, this is completely serious. The crowd is behind Kross, who recently had a tour of the US. The match goes to the outside and Lena hits Tommy with a big boot to the head while he is on the lap of a first row fan. Tommy shows off his strength by suplexing Lena into the ring, but Lena answers by getting the big man up and giving him a Samoan Drop. They exchange shots and Tommy gets the advantage with a huge lariat. Tommy locks in a standing guillotine, forcing Lena to tap out. Both competitors were impressive in this match. I would look for big things from Lena Kross

The Velocities win the Tag Team Gauntlet

Backslide Girlz come out first with a huge party including a couple giant bears, Everrett Conners and a live performance of their hit song “Backslide Girlz” which is available wherever you download music.

PPK def Backslide Girlz

Kingsley comes out with a huge amount of energy and tries to go for a backslide off the bat, but PPK hits a nice double team maneuver. BSG answer with a 619 suplex combination. The BSG have the advantage until the PPK’s manager interferes. PPK wins off of split legged moonsault from the corner.

PPK def Skater Boi Pidgey and Billy Preston

Preston and Pidgy do not seem to be on the same page from the start and PPK is able to put them away pretty quick.

Kulture def PPK

The Polynesian Princess and the Polynesian Powerhouse exchange shots to open the match. Someone delivered Nicky B flowers, distracting her from the action and allowing Kulture to get the win.

Kulture def MK Plus Ultra

MK uses double team moves early in the match and look very impressive but that does not last long, as Kulture hits some double team maneuvers of their own and Moko Kai locks in a submission for the victory.

The Velocities def Kulture

The Velocities are one of the top tag teams in Australia, but look to be in trouble early, as both members of Kulture hit frog splashes. There are a series of roll up reversals and The Velocities get the 3 count.

The Velocities def 3rd Eye

Third Eye attack The Velocities from behind to start the match. The Velocities hit a sling blade/power bomb combo out of the corner for the win and to win the Gauntlet.

Opening Round Match: Kai Drake def Robbie Thorpe

Thorpe is dominating the match early with his technical wrestling skills. Thorpe is breaking every rule that he can and being incredibly arrogant the whole time. Drake goes after Thorpe’s knee, locks in single leg crab and pulls back, forcing Thorpe to tap out.

Non-Tournament Match: Grayson Waller def Jimmy Townsend

Jimmy won the key to the card and could have went after any title, but he chose something bigger and that was a match against an Australian wrestling icon, WWE superstar, Grayson Waller. There was a huge reaction from the crowd for both wrestlers.

The match opens very fast paced with Jimmy proving that he can hang with Waller. They fight on the outside and  Waller drinks a Prime he had under the ring. Waller puts Jimmy in a chair and a fan in the chair in front of Jimmy, he then jumps over the fan to a double stomp onto Jimmy!!!!

We are definitely seeing the best version of Grayson Waller here, but Jimmy has not backed down. Jimmy hits two dives to the outside onto Waller, but Waller hits the Kobe Elbow when they are back in the ring. Jimmy takes control of the match and hits a Kobe elbow of his own. Waller catches Jimmy running into the corner and hits a brutal double stomp. Waller starts trash talking Jimmy, like only Waller can. He then pulls the ref in front of him and hits Jimmy with a foreign object. Waller gets a 2×4, but long time rival of Grayson Waller, Moretti comes out.

Moretti hits Waller with a fisherman’s buster. Jimmy hits a moonsault on Waller, but Waller kicks out. Waller puts Jimmy in a triangle choke, but Jimmy counters and turns it into a powerbomb. Waller hits a Rolling Thunder Stunner, then a leaping curb stomp for the win. This was an Incredible match from both competitors

Waller gets a mic and says that Australian wrestling is the best in the world and he came down here because he wanted to and because he loves it. He thanks WWE for letting him come and says that it is certainly a new era that he was able to. He puts over Jimmy Townsend and brings his friend Troy into the ring.

Opening Round Match for the PWA Heavyweight Championship: Jessica Troy (c) def Charli Evans

Charli comes out in immaculate wedding dress gear. Jess is an incredible technical wrestler while Charli is a bit more violent. Jess gets the first shot with a neck breaker on the ropes. Charli fires back and puts Jess in a submission, pulling her finger back. Big stomp off the ropes from Jess onto Charli’s arm. She is already trying to soften Charli’s arm up for an arm bar. Jess hits an incredible suicide dive through the turnbuckle, followed by a tornado DDT.

Charlie escapes Jess’s armbar attempt and puts Jess in an arm bar of her own. Charlie puts Jess in a Gory Bomb position, but Jess locks in an arm bar on Charli’s back. Jess hits Charli with two meteoras and locks in an arm bar. Jess hits a small package driver, but Charli will not stay down. Charli hits a suplex, but Jess gets up. Jess hooks Charli’s legs and pins her with a reverse roll up for the win. Jess may have known that Charli was not going to tap out and needed to find another way to beat her.

This was an incredible match to top off a great show. You can catch night 1 and night 2 on PWA’s YouTube channel.
