Scott’s Five Must-See Matches From The Weekend of 8/14-8/17

From Thursday, August 14th, through Sunday, August 17th, we have seen a slew of great professional wrestling matches. PWPonderings’ Scott Mitchell had the chance to catch up on some great wrestling this past weekend and put together a list of five must-see matches from the weekend. From the likes of GCW vs. JCW, Greektown Wrestling, and wXw, here are five must-see matches that every fan of independent wrestling should go back and watch.

5. Atticus Cogar vs. Nic Nemeth from GCW vs. JCW “2-Day War, Night 2”

On Friday night, August 15th, GCW and JCW held their second event in as many nights, “2-Day War, Night 2.” This event saw the epic conclusion of the 2-Day War between GCW and JCW. The show was headlined by a barbed wire deathmatch between Matt Tremont and 2 Tuff Tony. However, another match that stole the show was the one that actually opened the show, Atticus Cogar vs. Nic Nemeth. Nemeth represented Juggalo Championship Wrestling proudly. However, Cogar had his number. Cogar has been on an absolutely insane run lately. He absolutely should be in the conversation as to who should be the next GCW World Champion. He looked excellent against the TNA Wrestling star and has shown tremendous growth as a wrestler. While Cogar has the reputation of a hardcore, deathmatch-style wrestler, he has shown a lot, especially lately, that he’s so much more than that. Kudos to Cogar. Go check this one out.

4. 1 Called Manders vs. Ahura from wXw’s “Shortcut To The Top 2025”

On Saturday, August 16th, wXw returned to Oberhausen for one of its biggest events of the year, “Shortcut to the Top 2025.” The event was headlined by a 30-man rumble-style match where the winner gets a title shot. However, the match to go back and watch is also the opening match of the show. 1 Called Manders and Ahura went to battle for the coveted wXw Unified World Wrestling Championship. This was an epic rematch of their 16 Carat Gold Final. This was my first time seeing Ahura, and he looked incredible in this one. 1 Called Manders is a stud in every sense of the word. The best part about this match was every move each man hit on the other; they truly made you feel it. While Manders may have retained the title here, Ahura took him to his limit in a 20-minute battle. Go back and watch this one if you love brutal, hard-hitting matches.

3. The Production (Katie Arquette & Derek Dillinger) vs. The Cogar Brothers (Atticus Cogar & Otis Cogar) from Greektown Wrestling’s “August 16th

Also on Saturday, August 16th, we saw Greektown Wrestling return to Toronto for its big event, “August 16th.” The event was headlined by a three-way match between Joey Janela, Channing Decker, and PCO for the top prize in Greektown. However, there was a couple other matches to check out. First, there was a very fun tag team match between The Production’s Katie Arquette & Derek Dillinger, and The Cogar Brothers, Atticus Cogar & Otis Cogar. It’s time we start putting some respect on Arquette and Dillinger’s names. Arquette has been a star on the independent wrestling scene for quite some time now. She’s truly coming into her own with this whole “Production” gimmick, and it’s quite the sight to see. She deserves all the praise and flowers for her amazing run as of late. As for Dillinger, I’m becoming more familiar with his work, and he’s fantastic, too. He’s fun to watch and has a large personality alongside his professional wrestling skills in the ring. As for the Cogar Brothers, we all know how great Atticus and Otis are. Otis Cogar is beginning to showcase himself alongside his brother, and it’s been a sight to see. All things considered, this tag team match was truly can’t miss. Go check it out.

2. Drew Parker vs. Drake Younger from GCW vs. JCW “2-Day War, Night 1”

On the opening night of the GCW vs. JCW “2-Day War,” we saw Drew Parker and Drake Younger meet in a deathmatch to open the event. In my opinion, this stole the entire two-day event. While it’s been a bit of a question mark lately, it’s awesome to see the resurrection, in a way, of Younger. He took Parker to his absolute limits in this match. It was violent, brutal, bloody, and above all else, a fantastic watch. Parker and Younger had great chemistry together, and that’s something that can sometimes be pretty rare in professional wrestling today. This is one that I hope we see run back at another show. Parker has been on another level lately, especially following the GCW Japan tour. If he keeps it up, Parker could truly be next in line for some championship gold in Game Changer Wrestling, whether it be the GCW World Championship or the GCW Ultraviolent Championship.

1. Megan Bayne vs. Allysin Kay from Greektown Wrestling’s “August 16th

Let’s go back to the Greektown event from this past Sunday, “August 16th.” In the second half of the show, we saw Megan Bayne meet Allysin Kay in one of the best matches I’ve seen from either woman in a very long time. While Bayne was victorious, this was a match where Kay may have put herself back on the map. Allysin Kay has always been a tremendous wrestler and a great entertainer. However, following her departure from TNA, we haven’t seen her picked up by another company. To me, that’s so baffling. Kay is truly a diamond in the rough in the world of independent wrestling, and even though she’s not signed to a national company, like Bayne, she can hang with anyone you put in front of her. This was just an absolutely tremendous match. This was a match that reminded me just how far women’s wrestling has come. This was the match of the night, and honestly, it was the best match of the entire weekend.
