Scott’s Must-See Matches From The Weekend of 9/4-9/7

From Thursday, September 4th, through Sunday, September 7th, we saw some amazing independent wrestling matches take place. There was certainly no scarcity of events to choose from this weekend, either. From the likes of House Of Glory, to Pro Wrestling EVE, West Coast Pro, Wrestling Revolver, and Create A Pro, these are six must-see matches for any fan of independent wrestling.

6. Shotzi Blackheart vs. Priscilla Kelly from House of Glory “HOG Philadelphia”

On Thursday, September 4th, House of Glory returned to Philadelphia for its big event, “Philadelphia.” The event saw a ton of big moments, and above all else, some great action. So much so that it had two spots on this list. First, we saw Shotzi Blackheart go one-on-one with Priscilla Kelly. I absolutely loved this match. While this is technically Shotzi’s in-ring debut at House of Glory, the fans have already gotten so used to her, and she just feels like a normal part of HOG. Shotzi and Kelly absolutely killed it in this one. There was a nice touch where they started the match with Kelly and Shotzi jawing back-and-forth and Kelly saying, “you know what those b*tches in NXT were like.” They hugged briefly before Shotzi went back to her heel self. Ultimately, Shotzi landed a big DDT on Kelly for the three-count. So happy to see both of these incredible women living their best lives post-WWE. This match showed everyone that they still have incredibly bright futures, regardless of whether they were released from WWE or not. Beyond happy to see them both crushing it on the indies. Get on the bandwagon for each of these women, because they are far from done.

5. Mike Santana vs. VSK from Create A Pro “Till Death Do Us Part”

When Create A Pro returned to Lynbrook, NY, we saw Mike Santana appear at “Till Death Do Us Part” in a match against VSK. From its announcement, everyone knew that this match was going to rule. Santana is one of the best pound-for-pound wrestlers around today. In a ring with anybody, I challenge you to find someone better than Santana. He had a tough match-up on Sunday at Create A Pro against CAP legend, VSK. This was such a good match. Santana and VSK threw everything they had and more at each other. Ultimately, in the end, Santana landed a “Spin The Block” on VSK to win the match. Even though he’s local to New York, we haven’t seen Santana much at Create A Pro. Hopefully, that changes, and we see him back sooner rather than later. I, for one, know the fans would love to see Santana mix it up with anyone and everyone on the Create A Pro roster, including a potential match with Bear Bronson or TJ Crawford. Book it, Brian Myers. Check this out on the Create A Pro YouTube channel.

4. Kris Statlander vs. Nina Samuels from Pro Wrestling EVE “Strong Women Style”

The main event of Pro Wrestling EVE saw Kris Statlander put the EVE International Championship on the line against another top wrestler on the UK independent wrestling scene, Nina Samuels. Now, I don’t love it when independent wrestling promotions place their championships on television, contracted stars. However, in this case, with this banger of a match, I didn’t mind it. Statlander defeated Anita Vaughan to become the EVE International Champion, and she wasted little time continuing to make a name for herself. With how oversaturated AEW’s roster can be, Statlander getting to showcase how good she truly is on the indies is so important. As for Samuels, she’s no longer contracted and is now working to own her craft, and spoiler alert, it’s working. Samuels is showing fans and companies alike why she’s as good as she says she is. In the end, Statlander forced Samuels to tap out to retain her title. Go subscribe to the Pro Wrestling EVE YouTube channel and watch this whole event back. Including the viral moment from Hollie Barlow in her and Lana Austin’s match against Pretty Psycho, which is another match I HIGHLY recommend.

3. Charles Mason vs. Man Like DeReiss from House of Glory “HOG Philadelphia”

The match that followed Shotzi/Priscilla Kelly at House of Glory knew it wasn’t going to be easy. However, Charles Mason and Man Like DeReiss were up for the challenge. This was a title-for-title match for both the HOG World Championship and the PROGRESS Men’s World Championship. Fans knew that neither title would change hands, but that didn’t mean that it wasn’t going to be an amazing match. Spoiler alert, this could have been the best match on the night. At nearly 25 minutes, Mason vs. DeReiss went to a no-contest when Mason laid out a referee. Another contest between these two men was made for October 10th for Mason’s HOG World Championship. Mason has been on the best run of his life as of late, and it’s so much fun to watch from a fan’s standpoint. As for DeReiss, he’s only entering his prime now. He picked up a massive win over Luke Jacobs in a TLC match for the top prize in PROGRESS, and is quickly becoming one of the top independent stars around today in the UK. Go back and check out this whole show, but most importantly, go back and watch this match. This was a 25-minute war. Outstanding performance by both men.

2. Myron Reed vs. Steve Maclin from Wrestling Revolver “Clean Slate”

On Saturday, September 6th, Wrestling Revolver returned to Clive, IA, for its big event, “Clean Slate.” This was one of Revolver’s top shows of the year. While the main event was supposed to see Myron Reed defend the Revolver World Title against Rich Swann, Swann was taken out by Reed earlier in the night. This led to a new challenger for Reed, and Steve Maclin was the one to answer the call. Maclin defeated Damian Chambers in the night’s opening contest to retain his TNA International Championship in another great match. Now, he went to war with Reed in a rematch after Reed won the title in the first place. If you’re looking for a match where both guys genuinely went at it like they hated each other, it’s this one. The match saw a bunch of fun spots, including Reed hitting a cutter on Maclin, who was positioned on the apron, to the floor, and Maclin setting up Damian Chambers, Kayla Kassidy, Killer Kelly, and Reed in a “Tree of Woe,” and going corner-to-corner spearing each of them. This match ruled. This show ruled. Go back and check it out on TrillerTV+.

1. Kevin Blackwood vs. Karl Fredericks from West Coast Pro’s “God Called In Sick Today”

In what many fans thought was going to be the main event of West Coast Pro’s “God Called In Sick Today,” we saw Kevin Blackwood defend his West Coast Pro Heavyweight Championship against Karl Fredericks. This match marked Frederick’s return to the independent wrestling scene and West Coast Pro following his WWE release. Fredericks was out to prove something in this one, and the message came across loud and clear. Fredericks is officially back and better than ever before. As for Blackwood, he has arguably been the greatest West Coast Pro Heavyweight Champion in history. Blackwood is such a great wrestler, and he truly brings the best out of everyone he faces. In the end, despite Blackwood retaining, this was a match where there were no real losers. Frederick looked amazing in his return, and Blackwood continues to be the standard of West Coast Pro.
