Interview: Angelo Carter Talks Die-Spora, Blitzkrieg! Pro, Billy Dixon, EFFY’s Big Gay Brunch 11, LGBTQ+ Wrestling, and More

In PWPonderings’ latest exclusive interview, Angelo Carter (@angelocartertv) sits down with Scott Mitchell (@Scott44Mitchell) to discuss his group with Joseph Alexander & Kwesi Asante, his time in Blitzkrieg! Pro, his upcoming match with Billy Dixon, EFFY’s Big Gay Brunch, the importance of LGBTQ+ wrestling, his upcoming Power Pro Lucha four-way match this weekend, and so much more. You can watch it in its entirety down below.

You are in one of my favorite groups on the independent scene right now, Die-Spora with Joseph Alexander & Kwesi Asante. What was it like to form this group?

“I was there on both of their first days at T2T. Immediately knew, I remember the first time I saw Joe move, and I immediately knew, he’s one of the ones. Then, the first time I saw Kwesi move, I thought, he’s also one of the ones. Joe and I had a friendly rivalry, and we had matches and things like that. We one time had a triple threat match on a show ages ago. Kwesi was like, ‘I feel like there’s something here.’ Kwesi was pretty new. I feel like he was about a year and change in. At that time, Joe and I were about three years in, and we were already on the road together, going some places. Kwesi started coming with us, and it was almost like electricity between the three of us. An unexplainable bond really began to form. As time went on, Kwesi was like, I feel like we have to do something about this. I don’t want to say I was reluctant, but I was more like, let’s see where the wind takes us. I don’t want to overplan the future, and then none of this is what happens. Honestly, it just happened extremely naturally. I had started doing some tag stuff with Joe. We’ve done a couple of tag matches at Limitless Wrestling. Then, he and Kwesi started teaming up at QPO. We just became synonymous with each other. There’s just electricity when we’re in the ring together. You can tell that there’s really brotherhood there, and we’re really family. Friends isn’t even a thing; we’re really family. I think that’s why it comes across so genuinely, because it is. That’s really what you see.”

Alexander & Asante recently won the Blitzkrieg! Pro Tag Team Championships in a four-way tag match. What went through your mind when you saw this?

“So, I can’t watch them wrestle because when I do, I get emotional. I’m so serious. I don’t like crying for real, I don’t like crying in public, especially. I was kind of peaking through the curtains, and I’m looking, and I’m like, okay, no. My match was next, and I was like, I can’t watch this. I’m going to be an emotional wreck and then have to go out there and wrestle Rich Swann & Javi. Obviously, I watched the moment when they became the champions. I am extremely proud of them. They have been so just, I’m inspired by them in so many different ways. I feel like I’m so lucky to have two of the best movers in the industry. I feel like Kwesi moves like water, and Joseph moves like leather. Just intricate, deliberate. I tell Joe all the time that he’s my favorite wrestler. I tell Kwesi all the time that he’s my favorite wrestler. I believe that. I believe in them so much. I even got to watch them wrestle Sinner & Saint a few months ago. That even for me was like a moment because I felt like you guys are getting these opportunities because you guys deserve them. You guys work so hard. We can talk about them all day. I’ll be here all day. I think they are incredible, and I can’t wait to see what they do in the Blitzkrieg! Pro Tag Team Championships.”

You’ve become a mainstay at Blitzkrieg! Pro. What does that promotion mean to you, and what’s it like to be a part of that locker room?

“I’m going to be honest with you, my first couple of years there I felt such crazy imposter syndrome, and I don’t know why. Y’all are getting an exclusive because I don’t tell people these things. Granted, my first Blitzkrieg show wasn’t even a full year into wrestling matches, as I was barely two years into training when I started, and I got on my first Blitzkrieg show as just a manager for JGeorge. I hadn’t even had a wrestling match yet. Honestly, I feel like that’s the first real locker room outside of my own that really accepted me and was like, yeah, we’re going to help you get better. Everyone in the locker room is absolutely loving and welcoming. I absolutely adore Leary and Skylar. I think they are incredible people. The fact that I had gotten so many opportunities so quickly, which in hindsight maybe I wasn’t ready for, I felt like I wasn’t ready for. I’m so grateful to be a part of that locker room and to have been a part of that locker room. I wear the Blitzkrieg flag with honor. I carry it everywhere I go. That is the spot that truly began to give me these grand opportunities on a giant scale, where you can go on IWTV and see Angelo Carter’s name on the marquee, you know?”

The next Blitzkrieg! Pro show will be on May 2nd as Blitzkrieg! Pro returns to MA for its big event, “It Was Never Just A Phase.” What’s your mindset heading into that one?

“So, this year, I’ve walked into this year completely on a new level, feeling like this is a new era, this is a new dragon, this is new. Last year, I started with the Diamond Dragon moniker because I felt like I was shedding skin, like my old tag team partner, my old things, any old stuff. Any confidence issues I had, I wanted to shed the skin of all that because I wanted to really begin to lock in the fact that I put in the work, I know that I’m good, and I’m just waiting on pins and needles for that opportunity to show you that. In February, I had the four-way match against Ichiban, who’s incredible, Juni Underwood, who I’ve wrestled multiple times, he’s amazing, and Cass, who I’ve also wrestled a couple of times. I was able to get that win. To go into this last show with Javi and Rich Swann. I remember watching Rich Swann tag with Mercedes (Mone) on what was it, RAW? Like seven or eight years ago. That to me was such a weirdly full circle moment, like I was watching you on TV, and now I get to wrestle you. So this is kind of nuts. Okay, I didn’t get the win there. But I’m going into this next show, and I want to really continue to prove myself. I maybe didn’t get the opportunity to go after the Bedlam Championship. But somebody new just won the Jensen Championship. I don’t like that. That should have been me. I love Perry. I think Perry’s great. He’s been there from the very beginning of my career. Azure… Ew. So, we need to fix this. Perry did what he did as the Jensen Champion; Azure is going to have a little short run as the Jensen Champion. I was in the first match for it, and in the next match I have for it, I need to be walking out as Jensen Champion. That’s my goal right now. I’m going after the Jensen Championship.”

What are your goals for Blitzkrieg! Pro for 2026 and beyond?

“I want to, and I feel like this hasn’t been done before, I want to be the first-ever Blitzkrieg! Pro Grand Slam Champion. I don’t think that’s been done yet. I feel like people have won the Bedlam Championship and the Tag Team Championships, but nobody has won all three yet. I want to be the first person to do that. That’s like my biggest goal there. I’ve already been a Tag Team Champion, but I want to win the Jensen Championship, and eventually, I’m coming for the Bedlam Championship too. I want that around my waist.”

At Enjoy Wrestling on April 11th, you’ll be going one-on-one with an icon of LGBTQ+ wrestling, Billy Dixon. What’s your mindset heading into this one?

“You mentioned mentors earlier, and I’d be remiss, honestly, if I didn’t mention Billy as someone who’s been a mentor to me. I kept that strictly to my first year. I didn’t meet Billy until I started my second year. Billy and I are a match that has been supposed to happen so many times, and it kept not happening for so many reasons. It’s finally happening next Saturday, and I am beyond excited for that match. To say that Billy has been a mentor, I’d be underselling that, because he’s just been incredibly supportive and has always been there, loves wrestling, loves what we all do, and has always seen something in me, even in times when I didn’t see something in me. I’m super excited to wrestle one of my icons. I said on my Instagram story, this is my Mercedes vs. Bianca. Billy had said on Instagram that this is their last year and that they’re retiring this year, and it very much feels like alright, cool, I want to be able to take the baton that Billy held for so many years and be able to run with that. I’m so excited to have this match with Billy. I love Billy so much, and I think it’s going to be phenomenal. I’m excited.”

How important is it to you to represent LGBTQ+ fans as a young, up-and-coming, LGBTQ+ wrestler?

“Representation is so important, and you never know who’s going to change what we have now if there isn’t someone in that position. Perfect example, I never really watched independent wrestling before I started wrestling and training, so then I started watching indie wrestling, and I see Devon Monroe, Ashton Starr, and Billy Dixon, and people who look like me doing things that I want to do on their own terms. That, in turn, inspires me, which in turn inspires the next generation and the generation after that. Sonny Kiss. When Sonny was first signed, I thought that was absolutely incredible. When Nyla was first signed. Those are things that, like, representation matters. When you can see yourself on a grand stage or when you can see yourself in someone on a grand stage, that only inspires you further to be like, okay, I can get there. If you don’t see someone there, it makes it exponentially harder. You feel like someone like me isn’t in that position and main eventing WrestleMania and main eventing All In or All Out, or whatever your independents, if someone like me isn’t in those positions, maybe it’s not possible, and it is possible. But to see someone, to see yourself in someone, that is what to me makes all the difference. I can watch Mercedes and Bayley every single day and be inspired, love them, and have them be the catalyst to get me into wrestling. But, if I don’t see Devon Monroe vs. Eel O’Neal at Paris is Bumping in 2021, then maybe I’m not here where I can say, okay, I’m in a position where people can see themselves in me, and I can see myself in people. Maybe I’m not on the cover, first page, first person next to EFFY on the Big Gay Brunch poster last year. Like, maybe those are not places that I’m in if I don’t see that. So, that’s why representation is important. You have to be able to see yourself in someone else to believe that you can.”

EFFY runs his Big Gay Brunch every year at WrestleMania week, which continues to be such an important show. For you, how important is this show to the LGBTQ+ and professional wrestling scene as a whole?

“Honestly, I’d love to be there this year. Things didn’t quite work out with my schedule, so I don’t think I’ll be there this year. But first of all, shoutout to everybody who’s going to be on the show this year. There are so many new faces and so many people I’ve never seen on this show, and they absolutely deserve these spots. I said that Philly was probably the biggest crowd I had performed in front of, up to that moment. Last year, in the Palms, that was like the most professional place I’ve ever performed in. It was like wrestling at Radio City Music Hall, just like the way the seats were. This was real. But Philly was the biggest crowd I’ve ever wrestled in front of. There was not an empty seat in Philly. I remember looking out into the crowd and going, whoa. In the spot we were in, it was just insane. That show is so important. EFFY as a whole is so important. You may think EFFY doesn’t know who you are, but then all of a sudden, he’s liking all of your tweets and all of your Instagram posts. He’s so tapped in without you even realizing. EFFY is so important. He’s so important to the brand; he’s so important to the LGBTQ+ community in wrestling. He’s given us so many opportunities and so many things on a big stage, too. This is GCW. In any given fan’s mind, they’re like one of the trifecta of companies. To be able to get that spot on three different shows, 23, 24, and 25, I’m incredibly honored that I was able to be a part of those shows, have the opportunities that I did, and be able to bring some of my friends along and able to see people and have a big moment last year. That moonsault I did last year was probably the scariest thing I’ve ever done in the ring, ever. I was so scared, but y’all couldn’t tell. I’m so honored. EFFY’s so important to the culture. I hope that Big Gay Brunch continues and more young people like Jay Kharma, like Brianna Bandz, Nikki Winters, Edward Draven, all these people who are coming up. I hope they can get those spots, get those places, and really be able to show the world what they can do.”

This weekend, at Power Pro Lucha, you’ll be taking part in a Prodigy Cup Quarter Final match against Nat Castle, Wild Flower, and the newest WWE ID prospect, Airica Demia. What’s your mindset heading into that one?

“I am attacking this four-way as I’ve been attacking every single match this year. It’s just all systems go, we’re going in. The girls are going to see. This is such an incredible opportunity. I love what Power Pro Lucha is doing. Everything coming out of there is just getting eyes and starting to grow. I am so excited to be able to work for them this weekend. Hopefully, this will not be our last time. That trio’s tournament, I’m looking at you. Die-Spora. Just saying. Let’s put that out into the universe. But I’m very excited for this match. I’m going to be in there with three people. One of whom I know very well, Miss Nat Castle, honey. We’ve never wrestled, but we’ve been on sides together. That’ll be a very fun combination. Airica, I’ve been watching her stuff all the time. We’ve shared a locker room a few times. I think she’s so dope. I’m very excited to be in a match with her. Wild Flower, that elbow drop is dangerous, honey. I’m very excited to be in the ring with the three of them. They should be very excited to be in the ring with Angel Carter. They are very excited to be in the ring with me. When I win the four-way and go on to win the Prodigy Cup. Come on now. The Prodigy Cup winner, the Diamond Dragon, is Angelo Carter. I propose we change the cup from gold to diamond. Get a bottle of whiskey and drink some whiskey out of it. After I win, you bring me back in for the trios tournament with my brothers. Die-Spora, with the Prodigy Cup winner, Angelo Carter, and then we win the trios tournament. Come on, who do I need to talk to?”

Looking ahead for you, what are your future goals?

“I was just talking about this last night with a friend, saying how I have to really write my goals down. Every year I do, and this year kind of started so quickly, but slowly too. Like, wait, I haven’t written any goals down. I need to write them down. But, you know, off the top of my head, I have so many things I want to do. I’d love to wrestle for Ring of Honor, win my first singles championship this year, I feel like that’s kind of overdo. I’d love to keep telling great stories. Shoutout to BST, which is another place I’ve been wrestling at for the past couple of years. I’ve been able to tell some great stories with them. I love them as a company. I want to continue to work with all the places I’ve been working. One of my goals a few years ago, which is still a goal of mine, is to wrestle in the main event of all of my companies. Every place I’ve worked for a long time, I want to close a show. I feel like I’m more than capable of being able to do that. I’ve had bangers with so many people. I had a great match with Anthony Greene and Nyla Rose a couple of months ago; these are things that the girls need to see. Those are going to come out very soon. I just want to be able to continue to prove myself; that’s my biggest goal, I feel. I want to continue to prove myself. I want to continue to get in the ring, do what I do, leave the ring, and go, ‘yeah.’ I just want everyone to continue to see me for he’s a good professional wrestler and he deserves to be in more places. I feel like I’ve worked really hard, I continue to work really hard, and I’ll continue to bust my a** until I feel like all my goals have been accomplished.”

Do you have any opponents you’d really like to share the ring with?

“Every year I do a new album cover and just like do a fun little tease of opponents I’d like to wrestle, and I have so many. I’ve never wrestled Dustin Waller one-on-one; that would be a very fun match we’d have. I haven’t wrestled A-Game in a long time. We’re best friends. I haven’t wrestled Kwesi in a long time. Those are two people I’d love to wrestle in any capacity. Ryan Clancy is someone I’d love to wrestle in a singles match. I’d love to wrestle Sammy Diaz again. Charles Mason is another one. Andy Brown. Tyler Jordan, who’s another one who’s killing it. There are so many names off the dome I want to wrestle. Darian Bengston. He’s absolutely insane to me. Lee Moriarty. There are so many people I want to wrestle. I want to wrestle Tracy Williams again. There are so many names that I want to wrestle, because to me, they are benchmarks. They are people who are at the top of the game. You don’t have to, not even a second thought about whether they’ll go in there and deliver a good match for you. Not only do I want to get in there with them and wrestle them, but I want to be able to be on that level, too. Like, yeah, you’re going to have Angelo Carter, and it’s not even a thought that you’re going to get a great match because you are going to get a great match, always. It’s always going to be 10’s across the board when you hire the Diamond Dragon. But these are different matches I’d be able to have with different kinds of opponents. There are so many more. Maya World is another one. There are so many people coming to my mind. There are so many people I want to wrestle.”
