Nine matches, three hours. Thanks PWG.
-Taped from Reseda, California
-Your hosts are Excalibur, two former Ring of Honor employees, a current Ring of Honor employee, a PWG referee,
-Excalibur warms the crowd up as he is prone to do. He encourages the fans to keep drinking. Makes sense. No bringing out of all the talent in t-shirts this year. How are we supposed to get a group photo? He runs down some of the matches taking place on this night. Aries gets a surprisingly big pop. Are they just not watching Ring of Honor? Young Bucks come down the aisle at the mention of their name. They say they have better things to do (TNA PPV the next night). Bucks say they’re the best tag team in the world. They claim to make a lot more money in Orlando. I call shenanigans on that. Matt Jackson wants Rick Knox to count them out. Excalibur says PWG thinks ahead and calls the Bucks snot-nosed brats. He’s shootin’. No double anything. There must be a winner. And it’s happening right now.
-2010 Battle of Los Angeles First Round Match: Matt Jackson vs. Nick Jackson
Matt whispers in his brother’s ear. Double superkick on Knox. I guess that’s a double disqualification.
-Winner (s)/Time/Rating: No-contest/:50/N/R
-Should I even count this as the opening match of the tournament? I guess technically. More of an angle to set up what’s about to happen. This is also the first no-contest of any kind to take place during the history of the actual BOLA tournament.
-Cutler Brothers come down with a referee. They’re ready for a fight, and we have ourselves a bonus tag team match here on BOLA, night one.
-The Young Bucks (Matt and Nick Jackson) vs. The Cutlers (Brandon and Dustin Cutler)
Cutlers starts quickly on the Bucks with fisticuffs. Nick tossed outside. Slingshot spinebuster by Dustin on Matt. They nearly get a tandem piledriver, but Matt escapes. Dustin dragged outside. Amazing how they’ve slowed the pace down after the Cutlers went crazy to start the match.  Choke by Matt behind the referee’s back. Stomp by Nick. These two teams are so great. Spear by Matt on Brandon. Knees up. Nick sent into Brandon’s knees. Six second abs (double team lungblower) for two. Matt gets a superkick. Running knee by Nick. Double team 450 splash. 1-2-NO!  Brandon breaks the count. Matt hits a superkick. Nick hits a superkick. Double superkick on Dustin. No sold. Nick’s foot sent into Matt. Double team piledriver reversed. Bucks lift Dustin. Superkick by Nick to the brain. Dustin finally lifts Matt up. TANDEM TOMBSTONE PILEDRIVER! Cutlers FINALLY defeat the Young Bucks in a two-on-two tag team match.
-Winner (s)/Time/Rating: The Cuter Brothers/12:28/***1/2
-While this wasn’t technically the opening match, it may as well have been considering the opener was just a pretext to get both Bucks out of the tournament. Some great stuff all around from these two. It’s amazing how every match these teams have feels different. Different counters, moves, and combinations. I appreciate the work put in and hope the Cutlers can take those PWG tag titles soon. Also, the ending with the piledriver was awesome.

-Match felt very clunky at sloppy times, particularly in the earlygoing. Once they settled down, the match turned out pretty well. These guys know each other from previous bouts, and it shows.
-2010 Battle of Los Angeles First Round Match: Joey Ryan vs. Chuck Taylor
I smell comedy. Taylor and Ryan argue about Twitter to start. I’m not even joking. Series of shoulder tackles by Ryan. Clothesline over the top. Tope suicida. -Not a whole lot to this match. It was perfectly acceptable but nothing extraordinary.
-2010 Battle of Los Angeles First Round Match: Paul London (PWG world tag team champion)(w/Mr. Finnegan, the space salad owl) vs. Roderick Strong
Is Mr. Finnegan the first wrestling owl ever? And when is he going to wrestle Jack Swagger’s soaring eagle? Anyone who reads this in 2020 is going to be awfully confused by all these bird references. London is of course wearing his old tights with an enormous bulge emanating from his midsection area. London demands the referee search him. “Search his package” chant. Well done Reseda.  London makes him touch it. Mat wrestling to start. Crowd wants London to teabag Strong. The space owl remains observant as London applies a headscissors. Strong heads outside because of how close he was to London’s groinal area. London in the amateur wrestling position. He wants Strong on top. Strong is ever so careful and even spits in his hand. Waistlock. London up on his feet. Into the corner. Chop misses. Strong wipes his hand on the referee’s shirt. Crowd chants “penis.” Test of strength. London tries to bring Strong closer to his nether regions. Strong heads outside again. Strong with a kick that goes low. London says it was legal. -Winner (s)/Time/Rating: Roderick Strong/21:44/**
-This was 21 minutes of my life I’ll never get back. I have no idea what this was or was supposed to be, but a good match it sure wasn’t. I’m not going to sit here and say I didn’t laugh at some of the shenanigans contained in the first five minutes. So much absurdity and a good time was being had by all. The problem is there was no payoff to the gag of London having an enormous bulge in his pants, and I could almost forgive the lack of payoff if a good match happened. It did not. Whatever Paul London was in 2002 and 2003, he’s not anymore. I can’t think of a Roderick Strong match I’ve rated this low in a long long time. The best thing I can ultimately say about this match is the right guy won. May Paul London never be in another singles match in PWG again.
-2010 Battle of Los Angeles First Round Match: Claudio Castagnoli vs. Ricochet
These two have met in Chikara, but that was a lifetime ago. Claudio overpowers Ricochet to star. Back and forth they go with various holds. Off the ropes. Shoulder tackle by Ricochet. Does nothing. -Winner (s)/Time/Rating: Claudio Castagnoli/12:04/***3/4
-Immediate “Please come back” chants for Ricochet. I think PWG management will oblige.
-One of the more innovative matches of 2010. Even though these two have met before, this match felt fresh. Claudio showed off his power. Ricochet showed off his speed and balance. I loved the dichotomy involved with this match. Ricochet was the underdog but refused to die. Claudio proved to be too much in the end. Best match of the night so far.
-2010 Battle of Los Angeles First Round Match: Austin Aries vs. Rocky Romero
Austin Aries tells everyone cheering for him to shut their mouths. Seriously, after his horrendous match with Brian Kendrick the year before, why is he being brought back?  Chants  of “We aren’t sorry.”  These fans come up with some of the best chants ever. -Winner (s)/Time/Rating: Austin Aries/20:06/**3/4
-Every match seriously feels like it’s going about three hours long, and it’s showing. Crowd isn’t as into this show as they have been in previous ones. Romero and Aries had a solid if unspectacular match. Not much more can be said. I think having them go 20 minutes was a huge mistake because of how long a number of other matches on this show have gone. I think PWG shows turn out best when they go no longer than about 2 hours and 30 minutes. Right  now, we’re on pace to eclipse that by a wide margin unless the next three matches go less than 40 minutes.
-2010 Battle of Los Angeles First Round Match: Brandon Bonham vs. Brian Cage

-Winner (s)/Time/Rating: Brandon Bonham/14:41/***
-Good match between two of the young guns in PWG. Cage has shown a lot in two appearances even though he looks more  like someone TNA and WWE would be interested in. Don’t let looks fool you. Cage has the potential to be a very good performer for many years to come in PWG. Very enjoyable little. Unfortunately, with the exception of one match, I haven’t been overly impressed with anything else on night one.
-2010 Battle of Los Angeles First Round Match: El Generico (PWG world tag team champion) vs. Akira Tozawa

Tozawa manages to guillotine Generico on the top rope. Tozawa to the top rope. Generico catches him with a yakuza kick. Tozawa out again. German suplex. 1-2-NO! Crowd getting behind Tozawa. Shots across the head and a dropkick by Tozawa. Deadlift German suplex attempt. Generico slaps him in the face. Put of the brainbuster. Tozawa hits a deadlift German suplex. Generico doesn’t appear to get his shoulder up, but the referee only counts two. He clutches the arms, hits another deadlift German suplex, and provides us with the upset of the tournament so far as Tozawa advances into the next round
-Winner (s)/Time/Rating: Akira Tozawa/17:58/***
-Very clunky match. There were some really fun sequences and moves throughout, but it seemed like Tozawa and Generico were wrestling on different planes at other times. A bit of a disappointment, and it seems like that’s been the story of the entire tournament so far.
-2010 Battle of Los Angeles First Round Match: Christopher Daniels vs. Chris Hero
I should just mark an approximate time, give a star rating of ***1/4-***1/2 and see if anyone notices. Chris Hero was basically a different wrestler the last time these two met one-on-one back in Ring of Honor in late 2006. They also met in PWG at All Star Weekend – Night Two in late April 2005. Daniels wants a handshake. Hero obliges. Fans chant “Fuck TNA.” Daniels gets them to chant “PWG.” A wise man that Daniels. Feeling out process. “Chris is awesome” chant. Nice. We get a headlock/cravat battle. Hero even swings Daniels out by the cravat. Hero lets Daniels back in as a way of showing sportsmanship. Hero wants a handshake. Daniels slaps him in the face. -Winner (s)/Time/Rating: Chris Hero/18:18/***1/2
-This is pretty much what I expected from these two. It was a fine match and actually shorter than a lot of what else has been on the show. Pretty amazing how that works. Not sure this was a main event level match, but it was still decent  and didn’t insult my intelligence…unlike certain matches which took place this evening.
-Christopher Daniels wants a microphone. He puts Hero over, puts PWG over, puts everyone over. It’s just a big old lovefest between Christopher Daniels and Chris Hero.
Final Thoughts: I always say I don’t like to evaluate an entire tournament based on one night because it’s the completist in me. I was disappointed in many of the matches that took place on night one. Everything seemed to be off. The crowd wasn’t into everything like they usually are. It never felt like this show got into any sort of rhythm or flow. There was a lot of sloppiness in combination with matches going way too long. I think it’s fitting that the two best matches were also the shortest. Still, there would be enough to give this a minor thumbs up as a standalone show. Thankfully, I’ve got what will hopefully be a better night two on the docket coming up soon.
