-2010 Battle of Los Angeles Quarterfinal: Austin Aries vs. Joey Ryan
The idea of this match scares the crap out of me. Austin Aries basically cuts the promo he did last night. Joey Ryan wants to know what Aries means by “you people.” As do I. Crowd is behind both men. Aries isn’t happy about the people still cheering for him. Ryan is wearing heavy tape on his shoulder. Basic mat wrestling to start. Aries of course focuses on the left shoulder because he’s no dummy. Ryan takes the wrapping off his shoulder. Aries tells Ryan not to risk permanent injury to the shoulder. Ryan politely declines and suplexes him in the face. Only a two count. Come on. That so should have ended the match. Crowd would have popped huge, and it would have set a tone for the match. Not every bleepin match in this tournament has to go 15 minutes. Ryan clubbers away on the outside. Left-handed jabs in the corner. Whip reversed by Aries. Ryan gets an O’Connor roll. Shoulder first into the buckles goes Ryan. Running knee. Ryan shoved to the outside. Elbow off the top into the shoulder. Blows to the back along the apron. Shoulder DDT. Vulcan nerve pinch. Leonard Nimoy would be proud. Ryan fires away with right hands to the midsection. Irish whip. Aries with a boot into the chest. Clothesline. Knee drops into the injured shoulder. Crossface. Ryan grabs the bottom rope. Whip chest first and a backrake. Chestrake. Overhand chop. Right hands by Ryan. Whip in the corner. Aries gets his boots up. Off the top rope into an atomic drop. Clothesline misses. Ryan with more right hands. Head down and a boot to the face by Aries. Ryan hits a spinebuster. Superkick blocked. Kneebreaker into… a Joey Ryan crossface. Electric chair position. Waistlock reversals. Aries sends Ryan into middle rope and the outside. Missile dive doesn’t end well for either man. Back in the ring. Missile dropkick. Running dropkick in the corner gets two. Last chancery. Aries quickly switches into a Last chancery of the shoulder. Roll-up for two. Ryan gets an inside cradle for a flash two count. Backslide for two. Aries misses a boot. Ryan roll-up for two. Superkick caught. Kneebreaker into a back suplex. Running dropkick met with a superkick. THAT was awesome. Primal scream. A second superkick lights Aries up and gets him a well-deserved victory.
-Winner (s)/Time/Rating: Joey Ryan/15:26/***
-A solid well-worked match between these two. My expectations for this match were actually exceeded. The injury gave the match some focus. Aries’ working as a heel really helped Ryan get over as an underdog babyface. Already off to a better start than the previous night from a tournament standpoint.
-2010 Battle of Los Angeles Quarterfinal: Claudio Castagnoli vs. Roderick Strong
This is the second match? Wow. Lock-up. Shoving match. Hard lock-up in the corner. Feeling out process… and not a typical one. Both men are very aggressive. Claudio with more shoving while both men are in the corner. More mat wrestling, and unlike every other match in the history of wrestling, this mat wrestling feeling out process seems to mean something. Chop exchange. Suplex but Roddy with a series of chops. Right hand and a European uppercut. Goes for a gutwrench suplex. Settles for a hard forearm. Wow. Even Chris Hero blushed at that shot. To the outside. Strong sent head first into the apron. Press slam drives Strong’s head into the apron once again. He rakes the face of Strong along the apron. Back in the ring. Knee drop. Leg drop. Japanese stranglehold. Strong  with shots to the gut. Claudio hits a knee to the gut. Crossface elbows. Camel clutch. Elbow drop. Midsection rammed across the apron. European uppercut. Rams Strong’s head against the ring post. Claudio shoves Strong out of the ring. Strong comes back with chops and strikes. Knee by Claudio. Strong sent into ring apron head first multiple times. Chop sends Strong into the crowd. Back inside they go. Series of lateral presses. Headbutt to the midsection and a series of chops. Jumping knee. Claudio misses a charge. Running forearm and a discus lariat. Leg lariat for two. Up for the gutbuster but Claudio escapes and delivers a forearm to the back. Chop by Strong. Bicycle kick by Claudio. More chops by Strong. European uppercut by Claudio. Acecrusher by Strong. Tiger Driver attempt. Claudio lifts him up and applies a screwdriver. Strong rolls through and gets a stronghold. Claudio counters into a big swing. Tosses Strong aside. Running European uppercut. A second one. Whip in the corner. Strong gets a boot up. Enziguri. Gutbuster. 1-2-NO! Stronghold . Claudio reaches the ropes. Claudio delivers a huge lariat. Into the neutralizer, which I called a screwdriver earlier. Strong reaches the ropes. Claudio is frustrated. Charge misses. Enziguri by Strong. Sunset flip. Claudio roll-up for two. Pop-up European uppercut. Claudio covers and finally picks up the win.
-Winner (s)/Time/Rating: Claudio Castagnoli/13:47/***1/2
-Really enjoyable match between these two. Claudio is so big and powerful at this point that he even makes a decently sized guy like Roderick Strong look small. I also liked that the match didn’t wear out its welcome, yet still remained competitive and easy to watch. Off to a pretty good start in these quarterfinals.
-2010 Battle of Los Angeles Quarterfinal: Brandon Bonham vs. Brandon Gatson
Dueling “Let’s go Brandon” chants. Cute. Side headlock worked by Bonham. Off the ropes and a shoulder tackle. Off the ropes again. Back and forth. Leg lariat by Gatson. High knee. Series of strikes in the corner. Whip in the corner. Bonham lifts his boots up. Double stomp to the spine. Forearms and chops in the corner. Vertical suplex. Back suplex. Irish whip. Gatson gets his boot up. Bonham gets a leaping kick. Whip reversed by Gatson. Bonham takes him over. Shot to the midsection and an acecrusher by Gatson. Snapmare into a leg drop. Gatson heads to the top rope. 450 misses. Shot to the midsection and an enziguri by Bonham. Angle slam for two. Gatson shoves. Bonham. Bonham responds with a dropkick. Chop. Irish whip… no. Russian legsweep by Gatson. Elbow drop off the second rope. Whip in the corner and a clothesline.  Bonham catches Gatson on a handspring elbow attempt. Gatson on top for a long two count… maybe. Bonham may not have gotten the shoulder up. Emerald frosion by Gatson gets him the win a second straight trip to the semifinals.
-Winner (s)/Time/Rating: Brandon Gatson/6:17/*1/2
-Too short to really mean anything. Nothing offensive either. I’m a bit saddened that two of the local guys are the ones that didn’t get a lot of time to develop their match. I’m more relieved that we got a short match to break up the monotony of all these marathons contests.
-2010 Battle of Los Angeles Quarterfinal: Chris Hero vs. Akira Tozawa
Takedown and some mat wrestling to start. Tozawa tries to hit a German suplex. Hero stands up and drops him down. That was different. Lock-up in the ropes. Tozawa screams right in Hero’s face. Chop by Hero. Tozawa no sells and stares right at him. It’s on. Headlock by Tozawa. Off the ropes. No one moves on a shoulder tackle. Hero screams in his face. Off the ropes. -Winner (s)/Time/Rating: Chris Hero/13:57/****1/4
-Wow. I’m out of breath just watching that match. Unfuckingbelievable. Ricochet become a star in one night after his match with Claudio Castagnoli. Akira Tozawa became a star in one night after wrestling Chris Hero. Easily the best match of the tournament to this point. Words cannot describe what a spectacle this was. Just a stiff hard fought match. Tozawa took everything he possibly could before finally succumbing to a moonsault. Amazing how the best matches on this show have been the shortest.
-2010 Battle of Los Angeles Semifinal: Joey Ryan vs. Claudio Castagnoli
Feeling out process. Claudio focuses on the injured left shoulder of Ryan. Wrenches back on the arm. Looks nasty. Ryan quickly crawls to the bottom rope. Single leg takedown. -Winner (s)/Time/Rating: Joey Ryan/13:13/***
-Thunderous boos and anti-Ryan chants. Here’s the thing. PWG completely misread the situation. The company set Ryan up as an underdog babyface. Problem is the crowd knew who the real MVP of the tournament was. They knew who was having the best performances, and it was Claudio Castagnoli. PWG learned the error of their ways a month later, but this is one of PWG’s biggest blunders of the year. Not having Claudio and Hero in the finals was a boneheaded decision.
-2010 Battle of Los Angeles Semifinal: Chris Hero vs. Brandon Gatson
These two had a long boring match a couple months earlier. Ryan with an immediate kick and Sasuke special to the outside. Least they’re not waiting around. Crossbody off the top for two. High knee. -Winner (s)/Time/Rating: Chris Hero/10:02/**3/4
-I think Gatson got more offense in this ten minute match than he did in their 20 minute match back in June. I wasn’t completely impressed with what I saw from these two, but it was a little more tolerable. I still think the idea of having Chris Hero wrestle Joey Ryan a third time is retarded, especially after the way the fans have pissed on both guys recently. I’ll be fascinated to listen to the crowd reactions in the main event.
-Brian Cage-Taylor, Chuck Taylor, and Ryan Taylor vs. Johnny Goodtime, Ricochet, and Rockey Romero
None of the Taylors are actually related, but why not put them altogether? The purpose of this match is not only to create a bridge between tournament rounds but to also have some insanity along the way. Romero and Ryan Taylor start. Kick missed by Ryan. Romero has one blocked. Some quality mat wrestling. Romero with a headscissors. Climb up and a rana. Octopus. Ryan gets a roll-up for two. Kick to the midsection. Irish whip. Romero leapfrogs and twists himself up. Ryan stupidly grabs Romero’s hand. Takes him over. Tag to Goodtime. Rams Ryan into the turnbuckle nine times. Across to another one. Ryan counters. Dropkick low and over the top with a dropkick. Whip in the corner. Charge misses. European uppercut by Ryan. Goodtime cartwheels, hits a leaping kick, and rolls Ryan up. Ryan over. Chop to the back. Brian Taylor in with a series of strikes. Whip but Goodtime over. Sweeps the legs. Over the top with a dropkick. Chop. Ricochet in to nice applause. Backbreaker by Goodtime. Leg drop by Ricochet. Brian takes Ricochet in the corner. Chucky T in. He quickly eats boot. Cartwheel into a rana. Insanely fast sequence develops. Can’t even call it. Guess these two have met before. Chucky T wants a handshake. Ricochet is smart enough to know what the deal is, or is he? Handshake and of course Taylor stomps him. Déjà vu counter by Ricochet. Amazing. Chop and a tag to Romero. Clothesline by Ryan for two. Ryan goes to the top. Swanton misses. Diving double knees by Ricochet. Double moonsault misses. Chuck pulls his partner out of the way. AWFUL WAFFLE! 1-2-3! Taylor boys get their first win as a trio.
-Winner (s)/Time/Rating: Chuck Taylor, Ryan Taylor, Brian Taylor/20:12/***1/2
-A fine exhibition and not much else. I think this match went a couple minutes too long, but there were some excellent counters. I think the three Taylor boys have the potential to carry PWG on their back 2011. Them being together could equal magic. Chucky T could be ready to take the PWG title very soon. Ryan and Brian could make a perfect tag team combination. And on the other side, Ricochet should obviously be invited back on a consistent basis based on how much better he’s gotten recently. A fine non-tournament bout. Would also be nice to see Rocky Romero compete on a regular basis as well.
-PWG World Tag Team Championship: Peligro Abejas! (El Generico and Paul London)(champions) vs. The Cutler Brothers (Brandon and Dustin Cutler)
Cutlers beat the Bucks one night and get a title shot the next. Logic. In pro wrestling? For once… yes. Chuck Taylor goes right from his match to the commentary booth. -Winner (s)/Time/Rating: STILL PWG world tag team champions- Peligro Abejas!/18:22/***1/2
-A very good match that suffered from some crowd burnout in combination with the match perhaps going a little bit too long. I still enjoyed most of what I saw and thought this was another strong title defense by London and Generico.
-The four men shake hands to show we’re all friends here. Classy.
-2010 Battle of Los Angeles Final: Joey Ryan vs. Chris Hero
Crowd boos Ryan a lot during the intros. Hero gets more cheers, but they’re mostly lukewarm. Not exactly the finals everyone wanted to see. I assure everyone who’s reading this of that. -Winner (s)/Time/Rating: Joey Ryan/23:12/*
-One of the worst main events I’ve seen in 2010. Just appalling. I was bored throughout the entire match. I understand having guys wrestle four times over the course of a weekend is difficult, but having Ryan actually be the one to wrestle four times is a terrible idea. If these guys were hurt, fine. Then don’t have a 23 minute match. Don’t have Joey Ryan do a billion superkicks. It’s stupid, redundant, and makes Ryan look like he doesn’t know anything else. Look, Joey Ryan is not my favorite wrestler of all time, but I will acknowledge his improvement in the ring and the fact that he’s gotten himself in better shape. That being said, he has no business in the main event of a work based promotion like PWG. This company runs a minimal amount of angles. The only reason to buy these DVDs is match quality. Expecting Ryan to carry BOLA or even hold the PWG title is lunacy at its highest form.  Thankfully, PWG learned its lesson a month later. I’ll talk about that during my next PWG review.
-Chris Hero congratulates Ryan and wants a rematch if Ryan wins the world title. Please God no. I’m boycotting any future main events between these two based on this match. Ryan cuts a promo to a very mixed reaction.  He cuts a long promo and says nothing of note.
Final Thoughts: Atrociously bad main event aside, there was a lot of enjoyable stuff on this show to make me give the 2010 Battle of Los Angeles a thumbs up. Amazing how Chris Hero can go from having the best match of the weekend to the worst. The best and worst in a three hour period. Amazing how wrestling works sometimes. Be aware when watching the main event though. It might sour you on the entire weekend.

  1. Not having Claudio and Hero in the finals was boneheaded for the reason you said, but also because, well, Claudio vs. Hero-who DOESN’T wanna see that? Hero vs. Ryan should NEVER happen again. And Akira Tozawa RULZ. That is all.

  2. Roderick Strong is a reasonable sized guy?
That aside, I agree with everything you’ve said here. Joey using nothing but a Superkick to get to and win the tournament was insanity. Tournaments exist to let wrestlers show they can be multi-faceted. Guys with multiple finishers are born for tournaments, so having Ryan go to the same move over and over and friggin’ over was always going to end badly. I also didn’t want to see Hero vs Ryan AGAIN and the Kings facing off was on everyone’s minds, especially given how damn good they are in 2010.

  3. Just watched this again. The main event is worse than I remembered. For someone that’s been wrestling for so long, Joey Ryan just has no poise whatsoever. He throws some of the absolute worst punches I’ve ever seen and just stands there vacantly before, during and after them. So much stalling and repetitive moves. I get that he’s a part owner of PWG so Excalibur feels loyalty to him, but how he could sit on commentary and think Joey’s good enough to win is madness.

  4. After watching this again, I realiazed Joey hit twelve superkicks, and had another three blocked or missed. FIFTEEN fucking superkicks. Tournament winners need to be a little bit more variable in their offense than that.
