It’s been a while since Kevin Ford, Justin Houston, and Jerome Cusson have come together to talk about professional wrestling on a podcast. You might be wondering why there is a thumbs down. It’s not because of WWE. Jerome, Justin, and Kevin enjoyed Summerslam and even Raw. The thumbs down is for everyone’s favorite MOTYC, Davey Richards and Eddie Edwards. Kevin Ford finally saw the match and gives his extended thoughts on the match. He goes into exhaustive detail about why he doesn’t feel the match is all that great. The thumbs down is also for ROH’s first television tapings that t0ok place in Chicago and the fact that Jerome FORGOT BOLA WAS TAKING PLACE THIS WEEKEND! The show is discussed at least. A fascinating listen. Do it.

  1. After listening to the podcast, I think I’ve got some hot leads on the suspects who write “vanilla midgets, no selling” etc on Ari Berenstein’s Column of Honor every week….

Wow, I was happy to hear about Lethal’s victory, until I heard your arguments against it! True, sad to see Generico loss it so quickly. But as part of the bigger scheme, Daniels probably had to get out of ROH quickly, Generico and Lethal were guaranteed to put on a good match on the debut show, and a title change on TV the first week is a good way to drum up some buzz. I’m hoping this was just a fluke due to circumstances. And honestly, it was worth it just to read Kevin Steen’s reaction via Twitter.

So Dave Prazak is not on commentary at all? That is a MAJOR change. Is he staying with the company? He is still on the ROH website as HDNet commentator. I have heard criticism of the lack of passion from ROH commentary over the last year. I always enjoyed his work, but I’m excited to hear what Nigel will bring.

Jerome, I say this tongue-in-cheek, but you go to too many wrestling events and are spoiled! I understand the ROH tapings were long for the crowd, but it sounded like everyone sucked it up, except for you on Twitter. I hope Jim Cornette’s apology was sufficient for you.

    Love it guys, great episode!

  2. Thanks for the replies! As someone who writes for 411, I can tell you in no way, shape or form is it Justin or I who write the stupid slanderous comments on Ari’s article. We love Ari, and we love his column, so in no way would we try to deface it in anyway. I have a hunch you were joking, but felt compelled to say something just in case. Thanks for listening!

  3. Listening to the show now. Regarding the BITW tag match going 40 min. Watching it live the reason it seemed to drag was because common thought that day was the main was going 60 so the fact that match went so long and knowing we still had potentially another hour of wrestling to sit thru was really testing our patience. That said I really enjoyed the tag, thought it was 4* but probably would never want to sit thru it again.

  4. @Bartoloco- A lot of people were leaving after the third taping, so I couldn’t have been the only one who didn’t like the show going long. It was a case of that show being amidst a very busy weekend for me with a stressful Sunday of family obligations looming. My anger in the case of the show running too long is not directed at Jim Cornette or Ring of Honor. It’s at Sinclair broadcasting. They’re a broadcasting company who should be adept at handling these sorts of situations.

Thanks a lot of the response. I am well aware of how spoiled I am. That’s why it’s so frustrating when ROH doesn’t put on a better show than just about everything else that’s been to Chicago in the last few months.

  5. The problem with the commentary is, is that Cole does everything possible to point out how shitty the product is. I have NO FUCKING CLUE why you would do this, but that seems to be Vince’s goal with that character. And Riley was clearly the one at fault with the Doctor Bomb, but Cole shouldn’t have made it so obvious. Richards/Edwards sounds like the usual Richards bullshit main event. Both guys do a million moves, take a million moves, with no rhyme or reason, and don’t sell a bloody thing other than the finish. And it’s kind of sad, because Edwards is usually better than that-he just went down to Richards’s level. Edwards got screwed-should’ve had a long run. Bret Hart talking about telling a story in the ring is kind of quizzical to me, considering every match of his I ever saw was pretty much the same thing. I don’t know why Cornette has drunk the Richards Kool-Aid. I’d figure he’d HATE Richards.
I wish Generico had a run with the tv belt, as I don’t think he deserved to just be a transitional champ. But, I suppose since Lethal was recently on TV elsewhere, they felt he would make ROH look on the level. I don’t see Generico ever being the champ, and I think the reason isn’t even necessarily because he can’t talk, it’s his character. ROH is supposed to be, “ERR, wrestling is SER BIZ!”, and Generico is essentially a comedy character. They’re not willing to tweak the character to make him a viable champ. It’s just never going to happen. I agree with the MMA thing. Especially with Davey as the champ, and his nonsensical MMA-esque match style. It’s like he wants to be like a BattlArts guy, without understanding how the worked-shoot style works. MMA sucks a dick anyway-if you look at Japan, you’ll realize it’s just a fad. A few more years, and no one here in the States will care about it anymore either.
BOLA will rule. A lot of people have complained about it being a one-night tourney this year, but people have been complaining for years,(rightfully I might add) that the first night is really boring most of the time. This way, you get all the best matches with none of the filler. Hopefully. I mean, Willie Mack/Chris Hero, Castagnoli/Generico, Edwards/Strong, and Steen/Finlay all sound great. And the non-tourney match, Dynasty/RockNES sounds great too. Then, there’s the likely Steen/Edwards match, and either Mack/Generico or Mack/Claudio. Likely finals will be Generico/Steen (Generico wins, to set up a title shot at the end of the year-Final Battle 2010 in reverse) or Steen/Mack (Mack wins, to continue his breakout year). I’d say Generico wins, simply because the BOLA is the ONLY thing in PWG he has not won. To sum up, this should be a great show. And Steen will continue his PWG iron man run, with a THIRD three-match show. Thirteen matches in just six appearances. Steen is the man. As far as Steen asking for Super Dragon goes, GODDAMN I’d love that. But people have been clamoring for him since he retired-it ain’t gonna happen.
Jeez, I didn’t expect to write a novel. Sorry. How to sign off? I’ll go with the old Nick Gage standard. Fuck Hulk Hogan!

  6. And by spoiled Jerome, of course I mean lucky! And now Chicago is getting Resistance Pro. You’re interest/excitement level for that promotion?

As a married father of 3 I can totally relate. Believe me, I’ve been trying knock out YLC Night 3 from last year for a month now! But hey, you witnessed a little (or big) slice of wrestling history there, so I’m still jealous. I went to some of those horribly reviewed ROH Manassas show and still had the best experiences.

  7. Finally listened to the show, enjoyed it. Was expecting to be more vengeful as you three ganged up on the company I love, but honestly I agree with a decent portion of what was said. Ari, Chris and I will be podcasting and addressing some of these issues anyway though.

As for BOLA, I love how much story potential there is in every match. Hero vs Mack got bumped so that’s a rematch. Claudio vs Generico is a rematch without the belt on the line. I’d expect both Kings to lose. Roddy vs Eddie is happening in ROH a lot but as we all know, PWG makes things different. Eddie’s hot there right now so my instinct is to go with him. Steen is of course going to beat Finlay after they murder each other.

And then I’d say Generico goes to the finals and Mack looks great again, Steen beats the piss out of Edwards due to ROH hatred etc, goes to the finals too. And then I’m torn. Steen has owned 2011 so you might as well just give him everything. But that being said I could imagine Generico winning and requesting a Guerrilla Warfare world title match. If Steen wins you’d think he’d request a match with Davey as the ROH representative but ROH wouldn’t let their champion lose so forget that.
