Pro Wrestling Ponderings’ resident ROH expert Matt Waters has finally returned and he’s brought 411mania’s Ari Berenstein and PWP web admin Chris Gee Schoon Tong with him to defend the honor of Davey Richards and the Best in the World main event after some less than flattering comments on a recent podcast. There’s also some discussion about last week’s TV tapings and the rant against Mike Bennett to end all rants against Mike Bennett. A definite must-hear for ROH fans or just those who love a good debate.

  1. Uh oh, think I feel a Ladder War IV coming for Final Battle 2011…Matt and Ari versus Justin and Kevin!

Kevin Kelly calls this the “Evolution of Pro Wrestling”, I think that’s overstating it a bit. To me, it’s another type of match style that either you enjoy or don’t. You’ve got you squash matches, comedy matches, gimmick matches, and Eddie v Davey falls into the catagory “insane workrate battle”. That’s why I watch Dragon Gate USA, a lot of times I have no stake in the match, but the workrate is so phenomenal I enjoy it. I love football and MMA, but I’m not always watching for the storylines, sometimes I just want to watch people smash the hell out each other. I’m not saying that Eddie v Davey is devoid of story, I’m just saying at a minimum, that’s what you can get out of it. Working over a limb is great, classic traditional wrestling at it’s finest. But with this type of match, if you don’t see any specifics, it can be enjoyed just for the culmination of total destruction leading to the knockout.

Much thanks and good to hear from Matt and Ari again!

  2. The problem for me with matches like that, though, is that the finishes always inevitably fall flat because they’ve already hit each other with too many other match-ending moves. I always end up thinking, “That was it? Why did that move work?” There’s just never a good reason why.

  3. And thanks to Ari for deconstructing that “I don’t want to be a pretend wrestler” comment from Davey. Totally taken out of context!! And then to hear how he was gushing about ROH. I should have read the article for myself before jumping to conclusions.
