Indie Matches of the Weekend is simply going to be me yammering about my favorite matches coming up this weekend. Because I’m saying weekend and not week, any event running Monday through Thursday won’t be considered. Typically I will try to gather up 5-10 matches to highlight. Sorry, for the return you get 4.

Dalton Castle vs. David Starr (PWG 7/13/18)

First and foremost, I’m prepared to be utterly disappointed by this match going down a path of crowd-pleasing comedy. Which, okay, I get it, Dalton Castle does that well. What I’m excited about is the potential of two former amateur wrestlers who can really bring that into their matches when called upon. I’m not sure how Castle wrestles these days and the last match I saw from him was two years ago but he was real good then so fingers crossed that Sinclair Broadcasting didn’t take the soul from the HOT YOUNG PROSPECT! Let’s all hope they grapple each other into oblivion and Castle uses all the suplexes.

WALTER vs. Brody King (PWG 7/13/18)

The 2018 Wrestler of the Year versus one of the hottest prospects going. That’s titillating. They have built to this match with RINGKAMPF versus Violence Unlimited. It made clear that WALTER against King was the match. The odd thing about this is that it is a non-title match. I frankly don’t know what that’ll mean from a booking standpoint but I have to imagine it opens up possibilities. Expect a real slobber knocker. Just two big dudes going to town on each other. Really plowing into each other full force. Raw action. Gotta love it.

Fred Yehi vs. Jake Parnell (BLP 7/14/18)

FIRST TIME EVER! One of the top wrestlers on the planet has not been incredibly active since leaving the WWN family of promotions. He has found work in some of the PBTV promotions, Major League Wrestling, and now looks like he might get a run in Europe. Yehi is still relatively contained to the bubble. Seen by most promoters seemingly as a B+ player. Now, this match against Jake Parnell isn’t going to change that perception because I’m going to go out and guess this is JUST going to be a rad match. It isn’t going to be about providing this unique, outside the box, larger than life match. Over the course of the past year, Parnell has developed a following as a wild, high-octane professional wrestler. Not entirely sure how that will mesh with Yehi is more of a technician but I know he can work short bangers. Black Label Pro books interesting matches and this is one of them. Here for it.

Mr. Touchdown vs. Tracy Williams (CHIKARA/Beyond Wrestling 7/14/18)

I’m projecting onto this match more than I probably should. One of the original feuds that brought me to Beyond…okay this is already not entirely truthful. I knew about Beyond, seen some Beyond, but what brought me to Beyond was a man named Mike Rubba. I meant Mike at a CHIKARA show in Syracuse, home of the only Gargano versus El Generico match, and we struck up a good conversation where he sold me on giving Beyond a real shot. There was an SMV sale that happened shortly after and I bought a Beyond Wrestling DVD, Swamp Sessions. It featured a rad Drew Gulak versus Biff Busick match that is now for free online.
This has gotten away from me. During my time moving forward in Beyond, there was a definite build toward Gulak versus Mark Angel. It happened a couple of times but THE match never happened. Mark would go on to leave Beyond during a rather large CHIKARA upswing but once CHIKARA’s buzz disappeared, so did Mr. Touchdown’s. Mr. Touchdown against Tracy Williams thus ticks the boxes. Gulak obviously had a hand in Hot Sauce’s development, now a premier player on the independents as the Powerbomb.TV champion. Mr. Touchdown now comes in as a representative of the promotion he has stuck with through the years. Let’s fight.
