AEW December 5th 2019

The Inner Circle (Sammy Guevara & Proud N Powerful) vs The Young Bucks & Dustin Rhodes

A fun contest that played well to the Champaign audience and escalated to a satisfying finish. Dustin Rhodes was able to keep up with the younger members of this contest well and didn’t stick out in a negative fashion. This contest seemed like a precursor to a rematch between Proud N Powerful and The Young Bucks and that was confirmed later in the broadcast as the two tag teams will meet in their second tag team contest next week.

Rey Fenix vs Trent

A good match that showcased both men well and allowed for The Lucha Bros to recover from their recent string of losses. Trent doesn’t show off much personality when he is in singles matches, but he makes it up for that with his well polished smash mouth style. Fenix is a star and always steals the show when he is allowed to just get in the ring and showcase his incredible ring presence and rope control.

Cody enter the arena next to to be interviewed by Tony Schiavone. Cody talks up how the scar on his head is a reminder of his failure to capture the AEW Title and how his family and The Elite seem too busy to have his back lately. He talks up The Butcher/The Blade/The Bunny and offers them a match against himself and a tag partner of their choosing. Cody then switches the focus of the promo towards MJF, who has said he will never have a match with Cody. Cody states that he needs to wrestle MJF because MJF cost him his shot at the AEW Championship. He then runs down Maxwell while calling him a bush-league NWO version of Chris Jericho. Cody claims he always knew MJF was a bad guy but he was “his bad guy”. He then starts trying to tempt MJF into having a match with him by offering up his car, his watch, his shoes, and even a briefcase with 50,000 dollars in it. Cody says he needs to educate his former protege and all MJF has to do is name his price.

Joey Janela is shown being interviewed backstage. Janela states that he has nowhere to sleep tonight and he wouldn’t mind being put in the hospital tonight after his match with Moxley. He claims he has been put on the back burner and he tells Mox to remember their violent encounter at Fyter Fest. “But this time it will count” Janela states and he ends his promo by saying that this time Moxley will really have to kill him. Moxley saunters into the frame and stares Janela down. He walks off after shrugging his shoulder and saying “kids”.

A Dark Order promo is shown where the men we have seen shown interest in joining the Dark Order are being indoctrinated into the group.

Nyla Rose vs Leva Bates

A quick squash match that reintroduced Rose well to an audience that hasn’t seen her on Dynamite in quite some time.

After the match Shanna, who Rose attacked on AEW Dark last week, ran out to fight Rose but ended up being power-bombed through a table along with referee Rick Knox.

Next up AEW Champion Chris Jericho makes an appearance for a in-ring promo. Jericho plugs his new line of champagne and lets the audience know that he has to have one last contracted match in 2019. “Le Champion” then brings out a new version of his list called “The Lexicon of Le Champion” where he has written down who he will not face for his last match of 2019. Jericho lists off half the roster, and mentions Jon Moxley about a dozen times, but then gets interrupted by Jurassic Express. Luchasaurus claims that he and Marko Stunt deserve shots at Jericho but they step aside to let Jungle Boy take the spotlight. Jericho runs down Jungle Boy and insults him by claiming he couldn’t last 10 minutes in the ring with “Le Champion”. Jungle Boy claims he can and a brawl breaks out between the two units.

Hikaru Shida vs Kris Statlander

One of the best women’s matches in the short history of Wednesday Night Dynamite. Statlander came out of this match looking like a million bucks and Shida continues to endear herself to the AEW fan base. Statlander looks to be an official member of the AEW roster with this win and she may be in line for a title shot soon when Riho returns.

Brandi Rhodes and Awesome Kong come out to the ring after the match and attempt to coerce Statlander into joining their group, now known as The Nightmare Collective. A fan in the crowd, now identified as indie wrestler Melanie Cruise from RISE, calls out to Brandi and asks to join the unit. Kong and Brandi shave Cruise’s head and walk out with her in tow.

Pentagon Jr. vs Christopher Daniels

A fine match that was rough in some points and didn’t seem to cap off the feud between these two. The distraction finish is indicative of The Lucha Bros but this match felt like it needed a solid finish to end the feud.

A video package is shown of The Butcher/The Blade/The Bunny who claim they attacked Cody because they were sick of him being the face of AEW. Allie states they are here to cut the head off the snake.

Jon Moxley vs Joey Janela

A great match that played well in the confines of a straight wrestling match. Moxley looks to be in serious trouble at some points and Janela came out with some much needed momentum after the failed feud with Shawn Spears.

After the match, Chris Jericho and The Inner Circle stared down Mox from the crowd just like Moxley did to Jericho last week. The show ends with Jericho taunting Moxley by holding the AEW title high above his head.
