The Great Sasuke chronicles one life-changing year in the career of a regional Japanese wrestler and local politician known as The Great Sasuke. Sasuke describes wrestling as his “tenshoku” — a lifework assigned by god. He considers himself not just an entertainer but a public servant, which once lead him to win a seat as an assembly legislator of his home prefecture, Iwate. In constant observance to his public persona, Sasuke has never removed his mask in and out of the ring — even as a politician.

Set in the suburb of Morioka City in northern Japan, his story begins when Sasuke, now in his 40s, marks his 20th anniversary as a wrestler. With dwindling attendance to his performances and his declining health, Sasuke is now at a crossroads. He decides to climb back into both arenas — wrestling and politics — for a final battle royale.
