In PWPonderings latest exclusive interview, ‘A Game’ Joseph Alexander (@JosephAGame) sits down with Scott Mitchell (@scott44mitchell) to open up about some of his upcoming matches, including his match with ‘Flyin’ Ryan O’Neill on Saturday at Beyond Wrestling x CZW’s big event, “Double Burial,” and his match with Troy Parker at ETU on Sunday. He also speaks about winning the BST Championship, Blitzkrieg! Pro, J Boujii, Die-Spora, and so much more. Watch the interview in its entirety below.
Let’s jump right into it. On Saturday, at CZW x Beyond Wrestling’s “Double Burial,” you will be facing off with Ryan O’Neill. What is your mindset heading into this one?
“I think it’s really cool because, I mean, you just talked a lot about the technical wrestling aspect of my game, but this is something different. Flying Ryan, it’s in his name what he’ll bring to the table. So it’ll definitely be different. I like to showcase different parts of my game because I know my bag goes deep. I like to go in that bag and show different stuff. It’s going to be cool. I’m excited for it for sure. It’s the first time doing a joint show between Beyond and CZW, I believe, for a minute. Think that’s really cool as well.”
You will be representing Beyond Wrestling in this one. What does that mean to you?
“I’ll be honest, personally, that’s really cool to me because when I first started wrestling and whatnot, Wrestling Open just became a thing. They did the Wrestival, which was like the episodes there of Wrestling Open, and then the first Thursday the week afterwards. I went to both shows, and I wanted to be a part of that very early in my career. It wasn’t until I was able to do stuff at the Electric Haze, the Discovery Gauntlet stuff on Wrestling Open. Doing their Bound For The Floor tournament, and being able to wrestle (Jon) Gresham and (Wheeler) Yuta, you know what I mean? It was a lot to look forward to, but it was also stuff I really wanted to accomplish that I didn’t know was going to go that far. So, to represent Beyond now, in a joint show where it’s us against them, it makes me feel a lot of pride. A lot of pride on the line for that, for sure. I’m very happy about it. I worked hard to get to that position and be able to represent Beyond Wrestling.”
The last two Beyond Supershows that you got to work, you faced off against Hot Sauce Tracy Williams and Jonathan Gresham. What did those two matches mean to you and working with two of the best mat wrestlers around today?
“Hot Sauce has been a part of my career for a while. I’ve credited him with being one of my trainers early on. I met him, maybe in 2022- summer of 2022, maybe, Spring or Summer of 2022 or 2021. He came and did a seminar for us. Then, he came again. A little bit more frequently after that, a few years later. So, I spent a lot of time training under Hot Sauce for a few years. We never got to lock up. We never had a singles match. We did have a tag team match in Brooklyn at one of our shows with T2T. We did have a tag match. We never got to lock up in a singles atmosphere. So, to do it at Beyond, in a place where he was prominent as well, was really cool. It was really, really, really cool. Really dope. I’m very proud of that match. I think that match happened in May or something like that, maybe a little bit before. I’m still very proud of that match, and how physical it was. That match portrays a lot of how I like to wrestle. How physical it was. How I feel like everybody got pulled into it. Yeah, I was just very proud of it. I just knew me and Tracy had a lot of good chemistry in there. I know we both want the same things out of wrestling. I try to listen to his instructions, but I also try to win and take things as I see them. I thought that was a very good match. As for Gresham, I think I told him a few times at this point, but Jonathan Gresham is one of the biggest reasons why I found independent wrestling. How I even know about independent wrestling. Jonathan Gresham was one of the very first guys I started watching. I was just captivated by him. He’s genuinely the best. I will say it every day. He’s genuinely the best. He made this style. What you see a lot of us do, we all, whether we like to admit it or not, we’re all biting off of Gresh. So, he’s really that. Now, he’s just giving. He’s so giving now. He obviously went through a lot in wrestling, as well. It’s just so cool that this guy that I watched and was so like, I genuinely look up to him; it was just so cool that I got to share the ring with him, and I also do other experiences, like his two-day seminars in Atlanta and do other shows with him, outside of just wrestling him. So, it’s so cool. Just to get to share the ring with him. The match we had was very special. It made me want to get in the ring with him again. I know that we’ll make magic again, and the crowd reacted as such as well. Those were two amazing experiences.”
Last October, at the 200th episode of Wrestling Open, you got to work with Wheeler Yuta. What was it like to work with him, and was there any advice he gave you that you took?
“Working with Yuta was awesome. He’s such a cool guy. He’s super cool, super chill, laid-back to talk to. It was really awesome meeting him. What he said in the ring was pretty justifiable; I did smack him. But he said that I was learning, and I can take something away from that. But yeah, I tore my labrum before that match happened; that’s why I had to take time afterwards. I was super pumped for that match; that’s why I had to make sure that match happened. So, I did everything I could to push through to make it to that match. By the time I got there, I was pretty banged up, but you know, I was like, ‘Nah, I’m having this match with Yuta. I need to have this match with Yuta.’ I’m happy about it, for sure. That’s another one I’d want to get back, absolutely. Now, I’m out there 100%. He got the one-up on me. I think we had a good time, good match; I was happy about it. I want to get back in there, though. I want to get that back. I want to get that one back.”
Following this show, on Sunday, you will make your return to ETU to face off with Troy Parker in a match that is expected to steal the show. What is your mindset heading into this one?
“We going to fight. That’s just what it is. We going to fight. That’s just one of those.. I call myself the Pretty Boy Shooter; I’m not afraid to get dirty. I just had six stitches removed from my lip. I’m not afraid to get down and dirty. You know my style. You know what I do. I’m more than, I’m not scared, not running, not ducking no fade, I’m ready to get in there. Whatever happens, happens. I just know that I’m going to go out there and win 1-2-3. That’s just what it is. That’s the mindset I have every time. If you think I’m scared to go in there with someone bigger, possibly stronger, than me. Not at all. Not at all. I fought dudes like that since before I was saying goo goo ga-ga, you know what I mean? I’m not worried about that. Sunday at ETU is going to be business as usual. I’m very excited. ‘Show Me Series Vol.1.’ Shout out to everybody who cut a promo for that show too, showing that they want it. That’s exactly what the message is for that show. That started with a few wrestlers, myself included, who were really going to these ETU shows. I went to shows that were like ETU-adjacent. I drove Boujii to ICW to get dropped on his head by Homicide. I was doing all this and that to try and get on ETU. They give opportunities to people like that who are hungry, and a lot of them were. That’s going to be a great show. I’m very excited for Sunday, as well. ETU against Troy Parker, who may or may not be defending the BST Championship that day; who knows. He may get his hand on a title shot; we’ll see. With that being said, I know it’ll be a fight; I’m excited for it.”
The last time we saw you at ETU was in what I consider to be a match of the year candidate against J Boujii in the finals of the Rey del Estilo tournament to crown the new Key To The East Champion. What was it like to put on this match with Boujii and just make magic?
“Yeah, that was a special night. I can only give that to God. That’s all I can say. Boujii and I were- that’s my brother- let me just say that. J Boujii, that’s my brother. We were both in that place mentally where it wasn’t just rough; it was just a challenge. I don’t want to speak for him fully, but it was a challenge for sure. We leaned on each other a lot. I’ve been leaning really heavily into my faith and walking a lot more spiritually, and Boujii’s been leaning on me a lot. This match kind of just came about. When I had gotten the word about it, it was like, ‘Alright, me vs. Boujii. It’s crazy. This is my brother. We got to go to war.’ We said a prayer before the match, before we went out there. It was magic. I can’t really put it into words. Were there fundamental things wrong with it or things that could have been here or there? Yeah, probably. But I just can’t talk enough about how proud I am of that match. That was something I still can’t believe. The way, I think it’s very real for me because I always wanted to have this sort of presence in New York. I don’t know if this makes sense. Walk with me here. I always wanted to be one of the guys out of New York. I traveled around a lot early on, and it wasn’t really a thing if, did I really have a home base? I tried really hard to connect with the crowd out there. Sometimes I didn’t; sometimes it was a swing and a miss, and sometimes it was a hit. That match with Boujii, we connected with the crowd fully. That was so validating for me. It was really, really special.”
Recently, at Blitzkrieg! Pro, we saw you and Kwesi Asante, collectively known as the Ancestral City Shooters, defend your titles against Miracle Generation. What was it like working with them and, in a way, getting your lick back for what they did to you guys at the last show?
“I don’t know. I’m happy we beat them, but they’re just so grimy sometimes. They did a shooting star onto Gina. I don’t know how I feel about that stuff. If you beat them, they make sure you don’t forget about them. That’s one thing about them. They are the best tag team on the indies right now. What can we talk about that hasn’t already been said about Kylon King and Dustin Waller as a unit? Those guys are unbeatable. We got past them. We got past them. They’ve been stooping down a little bit. But we got past them and made sure that they felt that. I’m happy with that. To get to be in the ring with them, we really like to compete, us four. So, you could only imagine how that is getting in there and how hard and intense it is going against each other. It is what it is. It brings the best out of us. That’s what we strive for at Blitz.”
Are there any names you’d like to face off with and defend those tag titles against?
“Man. Cowboy Way just won their match against Dolphin Funeral, so I think that only gives them the right to challenge for the titles. I think that they’re a formidable opponent. We could get some people to come outside for sure. Cowboy Way is a good one. Bustah & The Brain is a good one too. Even, man, I could go on. I would say Violence Is Forever. I got so many tags now jumping up in my head. You name it. They want to come outside, the New Level. If they want to come outside, please do. Please do. I’m sure they would be allowed to. I’m sure they could come outside whenever they want. If they ever want to come outside, please do. We would be more than happy to have you. There’s a bunch. There’s a bunch. There’s a lot of good tag teams right now. There’s a lot for sure.”
You are also the brand new BST Champion. What did it mean to defeat Dijak for that title?
“Man, that was so real. That was so real. That was such a special moment for me. BST is definitely that place I can call home. I put a lot into that place. I was there for a while. I was there for a while. I brought Kwesi in. I brought Angelo in. We told stories there that I don’t think have been told. So, to just now represent the company as its champion, yeah, man. That’s awesome. I want to be the best champion that company ever produced or ever had. I want to be the best champion to ever wear that championship. Wherever I go later on in life, I want them to have something they could genuinely be proud of with us working together, you know?”
Now, we will see Die-Spora implode in your first defense as you defend against Kwesi Asante and Angelo Carter in a three-way match. What is your mindset heading into that one?
“Sometimes brothers fight. It is what it is. I’ve tried to avoid it. Let the record show, I just wanted to stop doing cheating and nefarious tactics. I was leaning away from it. I was having a lot more fun having these good back-and-forth matches. They didn’t really take to that well. Then, it just caused this ripple effect; I think that became uncontrollable. Then I got injured, and things just went left. So, now we’re here. This is the point. Angelo went down a little bit of a path. We’ll see how that turns out on Halloween. Kwesi is the number one contender. I said, let’s just settle this. I know Kwesi wasn’t happy with it, but I’m the champion. What are you going to tell me, no? You can’t. At this point, it is what it is. At this point, it is what it is. Angelo just dropped a promo. Slightly concerning. Slightly concerning. But I’m sure I’ll have a response in the next few days. A lot of travel and a lot of stuff on my mind, but I’m sure I’ll definitely have something to say to Angelo Carter soon. Real soon.”
Looking ahead, what are your future goals?
“Forgive me for being dry, but honestly, man, whatever God puts in front of me. That’s what my goal is in wrestling. That’s honestly something that I had to give up as time came by. I clung to a lot of things selfishly. It just wasn’t healthy. So, yeah. Whatever God puts in front of me, man. I’m going to attack it with my best foot. I would love to do really cool things and go to cool places, but I know that it starts with working hard and being honest with yourself. If I get these opportunities that come into my lap, trust I’ll make the most out of them. I’ll get these opportunities for a reason. So, I guess stay tuned. We will see. You and I both. You and I both, we will see.”
Any future opponents you’d like to share the ring with?
“Yeah. I feel like there’s a bunch. I can name off. I’d love to share the ring with JTG. I’ve been on a few shows with him, at this point. I would love to share the ring with Bear Bronson. I feel like that would be really cool. Labron Kozone. Gresham, again. There are so many people I can say. There are so many people I want to wrestle. It’s so good. Jaden Newman. Who else, who else? There are so many people I can name off the top of my head, for real. Darius Lockhart. I can just keep naming people, honestly. But there’s a lot. There’s a lot. I want to get in the ring with a lot of people, man. I want to get in the ring with people who are the best in the world, people who are underrated, overrated, whatever. I want to get in the ring with everyone, bro. I want to get in there. I love this. I love this. It just fires me up. This is the best job in the world. Anyone who wants to get in there and feels the same way, let’s do this.”
