Back suplex blocked by an elbow strike. Green Ant with hard shots to the back. Superkick and a boot in the corner. Forearm. Brainbuster drops assailANT. Chikara Special: Green! assailANT taps.

Match Analysis: What happens when you get an energetic opener and combine it with a molten hot crowd? Why you get this very match. These guys both looked very good. assailANT is successful within the context of Chikara because he’s not trying to perform the moves done by other ants. Green Ant should be in singles matches more often as he excels in them. Good start to the show on multiple levels.

-Cameron Matthews talks about conventions in wrestling and talks about being entertained. You know how I know he’s probably not entertaining? CAUSE HE HAD TO SAY IT! That’s like people who talk about being rebellious. Don’t buy it.

Match in Five Words or Less: Kobald Gets Stoned

Match Highlights: Matthews sounds like an FCW name. At least Chikara comes up with quality names like deviANT and combatANT…okay bad examples. But Hallowicked and Jigsaw have worked out. Jivin’ Jimmy comes out dancing. I know. I’m as shocked as you. Matthews attacks Jimmy before the other two competitors come out. Immediate 450 back drop on Matthews. That’s a good way to hurt yourself. Kobald slithers toward ringside. Jimmy with a beel out of the corner. Matthews tossed to the floor. Kobald attacks from behind and fares no better as he gets double chopped in the throat. Jimmy misses a blind charge. Kobald dropkicks Stone trying to come in the ring. Matthews hits a springboard splash on Jimmy. Matthews works over Stone on the outside as Kobald bites Jimmy. Chops and choking from Kobald. Stone hits a right hand and drives Matthews’s head into the mat. He then walks across two opponents and hits a swinging DDT on Kobald. Punches in the corner on Matthews. Jimmy lawn darts him and hits a pair of right hands. Matthews tries to slap Jimmy but gets flipped over to the outside. Matthews legit has a death wish. Kobald kicks Matthews out. Jimmy asks Stone for help on Kobald. Big swing. Stone plays a little jump rope. Jimmy sends him down knee first on Kobald. Matthews hits a splash. Stone to the top rope and he hits a dropkick on Matthews. They both toss him down. Jimmy breaks the pin for whatever reason. Dummy. Jimmy pokes Stone in the eye. Noogie action from Jimmy. Matthews superkicks Jimmy. He stands atop the portly Jimmy. Choking and a knee drop on Matthews. Kobald with a series of strikes before being sent back by Matthews. Matthews sent on the apron. Stiff kick and he misses an asai moonsault and lands right on his knees. Kobald hits a tope plancha. Jimmy with a leg lariat on Stone. Crowd wants some dive action by Jimmy. Jimmy instead tosses Stone. Stone completes the series of dives with a fat one of his own. Stone tossed in the ring. Jimmy struts around and then drops Stone on his head. 1-2-NO! Stone powders to the floor. Low dropkicks by Matthews and Kobald. Dropkick to the side of the head by Kobald on Jimmy. Matthews with a beautiful springboard moonsault. Demon’s Toilet and Jimmy is gone. Stone takes Matthews in the corner but meets boot. Kobald hits a back suplex into a bridge. Matthews breaks the count like a moron and mounts Kobald for a series of right hands and forearms. Kobald whipped in the corner. Matthews taken up and over. Forearm. Miss of a splash. Stone hits a nasty looking lungblower to take out Matthews. Kobald hits a spear. 1-2-NO! Double knees and a quick cover for two. Stone whipped in the corner. Modified chinlock. Stone hits a chinbreaker. Clothesline by Kobald. 1-2-NO! Stone leapfrogs and hits a leaping knee strikes. Series of punches in the corner. Stone drops Kobald on his face. Slap from Kobald leads into a powerbomb. He shouts for his finisher. Stone kips up and meets Kobald.  Top rope sidewinder gets Stone a big upset in the tournament.

Match Analysis: This was a pretty sweet little match and probably the best of the four semifinal matches. Stone winning was a pleasant surprise and added an air of unpredictability to YLC. Matthews was both the most impressive and most reckless in the match… which makes it tough for me to fully assess his work. Jimmy fits in with Chikara but I could see him only having a limited run. Kobald is a solid performer, but Stone could definitely be something. His body type and moveset seem to fit in with Chikara pretty well.

Armdrag. Shot to the back and kick by Ophidian. Back to the chops. Bodyslam leads to a go behind. Another armdrag by Frightmare. Step-up rana. Ophidian breaks the whip up and begins working over Frightmare’s left elbow. Double knees miss. Frightmare taken up and over. Forearm and cross body from Frightmare. Into a roll-up for two. Shot to the face and blows to the arm by Ophidian. Guillotine across the left arm. Here comes Delirious to nod approval toward Ophidian. Pseudo suplex into an armbar by Ophidian. Series of clubbering blows to the back and left arm. Leg lariat by Ophidian.  Knee drops into the arm. Short stomp. Choking by Ophidian. Double knees in the corner. Frightmare falls. Ophidian with another double knees shot. Forearms by Frightmare. Ophidian grabs the nerve hold and hits the enziguri. Ophidian misses double knees off the top rope. Pele kick from Frightmare. Enziguri misses. Spinebuster straight into the pin by Ophidian. Double knees off the top. 1-2-NO! Forearms by Frightmare. Ophidian leaps over. Running yakuza kick gets only two. Back to the forearms. Ophidian jerks the left arm. Rana sends Ophidian on top of his head. That was naaaaaasty. 1-2-NO! Ophidian grabs Frightmare’s legs. Ophidian transitions into the Death Grip. Frightmare has no choice but to tap.

Match Analysis: I never realized how much I missed Frightmare until this match. It’s like he never left as he’s added a few wrinkles to his offense and had one of Ophidian’s better matches this year. Ophidian’s heel offense also continues to get better as he not fully relying on choking but instead is able to mix it in more naturally with other offense. Another good match on this show.

Winner (s)/Time/Match Rating/Entertainment Rating: Ophidian/11:02/***1/4

-Delirious comes in to I guess celebrate Ophidian’s victory.

Match in Five Words or Less: WHO COULD HE BE?

Match Highlights: I’m using Stranger for shorthand. Crowd is really into Stranger. Why? CAUSE HE’S WRESTLING ICARUS. Fairly easy booking to turn someone face. Some stalling from Icarus to begin. Icarus tries taking a cheap shot but Stranger punches him. Elbow misses and Stranger locks arms and dances. Slap leads to more stalling from Icarus. Clothesline. Stranger kicks metaphorical dirt on him. Icarus wants a test of strength. Boot to the midsection and headlock. Shoulder tackle from Icarus. Stranger corrals him and hits an STO. Stomps in the corner. Jon Barber establishes himself as the sheriff. Stranger backs him down. Back to the stomps. Icarus reverses a whip but runs into a boot. Stranger then rides him like a horse. YEE HAW! Icarus flapjacks Stranger into the top turnbuckle and gets two. Snap suplex and he rolls through into a butterfly choke. More choking along the middle rope. Russian legsweep followed by an elbow drop. Backcracker. Icarus tosses Stranger outside. He chokes Stranger with his boot. Chop by Icarus. No fans want to help Icarus. Back in the ring for a two count. Whip to the corner misses. LARIAT! Right hands from Stranger. Big round house right hand. Bulldog. 1-2-NO! Off the top rope with a double axehandle. 1-2-NO! Spinning toe hold. Icarus kicks him away and goes for sliced bread. Pumphandle slam. 1-2-NO! Big right boot. Kick to the midsection. Gutwrench powerbomb. Stranger heads to the top rope. Leg drop connects and Icarus is done.

Match Analysis: No doubt helped by a wonderful crowd, Stranger may have become my new favorite wrestler in just one match. When looking at a match like this, throw star ratings out the window because it’s not about “workrate” per se. Icarus is so loathed and despised that the crowd is immediately willing to embrace literally anyone who walks through the curtain. Stranger just happens to be an excellent wrestler and a guy who can slip into any role seemingly. Just a very fun match.

deviANT and combatANT bring Soldier Ant in. They hassle him and make it clear Soldier Ant has to listen to combatANT. combatANT says to fall in line in the Batman voice. Soldier Ant is wearing a “POW” arm band.

Match in Five Words or Less: Chikarametrics Rears Its Ugly Head

Match Highlights: I was in such a good mood before this match. Let’s try to power through this, shall we? Crowd is at least behind Soldier Ant. He starts off with a long-time rival in Akuma. Feeling out process between the tecnicos. Doesn’t last as Soldier hits a rana out of the corner. Airplane spin and both men are dizzy. Akuma swings Soldier Ant around but collapses. They wander about the ring and fall. COMEDY! Swarm and 3.0 battle it out. Tecnicos clear the ring with dropkicks on the evil ants. Double team on combatANT. Clothesline and Russian legsweep. Short suplex by Parker and a knee drop. combatANT taken into the corner. Parker reverses a whip. CombatANT sends Parker down hard across the top rope. Heat segment on Parker. Soldier Ant prevents cheating but does participate slightly. Back drop on combatANT leads to an Akuma hot tag. Clotheslines for the Swarm. Miscommunication leads to a spinning DDT on combatANT. Akuma drives his knees into the chest of deviANT. Soldier Ant breaks up the pin and hits a samoan drop. Matthews with chops. Headscissors. Kick by deviANT. Matthews with a headscissors on him. Whip of deviANT. Double team by 3.0. Akuma becomes involved with an elbow drop off the back of Matthews. Swarm send Matthews into the corner. Clothesline by each man. Then they force Soldier Ant to join in on six feet of fury. Soldier Ant slides away before executing the move. TKO on Matthews. Pair of kicks by Akuma. Kicks for everyone! Short chokeslam by Matthews. Into the Boston crab. No, Akuma hits a rolling death valley driver. Double team lungblower by 3.0. That’s good enough for the victory.

Match Analysis: The psychology of this match felt completely out of whack as the storyline completely overwhelmed the match in a bad way. If Soldier Ant was going to behave the way he did, why would he even show up? If Wink threatened him, that’d be one thing. But he’s done nothing. I like the way 3.0 and Akuma have worked together, and if nothing else, them being tecnicos at least makes some semblance of sense and they can be a team that works under the Chikarametrics system. Overall though? I want this storyline to end sooner rather than later. That almost completely discounts the Gekido storyline which is a whole nother matter.

Winner (s)/Time/Match Rating/Entertainment Rating: 3.0 and Gran Akuma/9:16/**/**

-Soldier Ant gets yelled at but he basically just walks away.

Match in Five Words or Less: Batiri Build-up Begins

Match Highlights: The remnants of the BDK and Batiri have worked together in the past, but Hammermeier is the one who took the pinfall in the Royal Rhombus match back at Anniversario weekend. Hammermeier tries to talk the Batiri down, but that fails. Donst is being all emo in the corner. Hammermeier gets slapped and tries to get his partner to help, but Batiri take advantage right away. Series of stomps gives way to Kodama punching Hammermeier in the back of the head. Choking along the bottom rope. Bodyslam and headbutt by Kodama. Hammermeier comes back with chops. Back elbow in response from Obaryion. The crowd is actually behind Hammermeier. Delirious appears at ringside. Drop toehold into the knee of Obaryion comes after Donst turns down a tag. Obaryion knocks Donst down. Kneelift by Obaryion. Slingshot by Kodama. Hammermeier out of the burning hammer position leads to a tag to Donst. Donst steps off the apron. Batiri resume double teaming Hammermeier. Donst mentions not caring. Obaryion rubs Donst’s head. Hammermeier with a modified backbreaker. Donst comes in the ring, but he isn’t legal. Hammermeier shoved outside. Donst with clotheslines and he works over Obaryion in the corner. Kodama sent outside but Donst hits an overhead throw. STDonst. Obaryion kicks him. Swinging DDT but Donst tosses him outside. Tope suicida. Kodama has a dive blocked. Clotheslines and back elbows by Hammermeier. Donst tosses Obaryion back in the ring. Donst doesn’t want to work with his partner on a double team. Dropkicks from the Batiri on Donst. Hammermeier hits a running forearm on Obaryion. Hammermeier covers but Donst breaks the count. Blockbuster by Kodama but Hammermeier breaks the count. Delirious is still staring. Donst throws Hammermeier to Obaryion’s leaping top rope DDT. This is good enough for a Batiri victory.

Match Analysis: Lot of interesting dynamics within this match as once again the storyline took precedence over the actual match quality. Hammermeier was getting cheers from the crowd, and Donst was continuing his Raven/emo act. What’s going on between Donst and Hammermeier might be one of the most interesting thing going on in Chikara so similar to the previous match, we’ll have to see where it goes.

Match in Five Words or Less: Shorter Than The Shard

Match Highlights: Shard with an immediate dropkick out of the corner. Stomps in the corner. Dunkerton takes him up and over. Elbow strike. Forearm on the outside of the ring. Dunkerton grabs some mini basketballs and use them against Shard. Aren’t those foreign objects? And “Balls” chants in Chikara? Wow. Shard rams Dunkerton’s left arm into the post. He rams him back first before sending Dunkerton back in the ring. Armbar applied. Whip in the corner and a running forearm. Shard hits Dunkerton again in the arm. Shard wrenches the arm. Kick by Shard and a clothesline to the back of the head. Choking along the bottom rope. Kicks by Shard. Whip across. Shard posts his shoulder. Dunkerton hits a modified spinebuster. Dunkerton has a backslide blocked. Sloppy Gory Special hit by Shard. He’s really too short to deliver it properly. Headbutt by Dunkerton. Shard hits a leaping enziguri. Dunkerton with a roll-up out of nowhere for three!

Match Analysis: A bit surprising to see Dunkerton win so quickly, but it’s good to not always have long drawn out matches and to create an air of unpredictability to finishes and show they can come anywhere. Tough to really say whether this was a “good match,” but in the time given it was enjoyable nonetheless.

Match in Five Words or Less: Of Course This Ruled

Match Highlights: Roselli and Thomas argue about who’s going to start the match. There’s only one fair way to settle it. Rock. Paper. Scissors. Just for the record, I remember literally nothing about the Heart Throbs time in WWE. Thomas and Quack start. Into an armbar goes Thomas. Knee strikes. Quack has some fun at Thomas’s expense and works his way into a wristlock. Armdrags into the modified armbar. Roselli tags. Some shenanigans ensue. Roselli shoulder blocks his own partner. Jigsaw and Quack with some nice double team combinations. Young Bucks clear out Quack and Jigsaw. Spectral Envoy then go to work themselves. Sidewinder hit on Nick. Step-up rana by Wicked. Iconoclasm. Perfect neckbreaker by Mantis. All of the tecnicos go for dives, but the rudos call for time and avoid the dives. They go to a white board and talk strategy. Hilarious. Tecnicos are huddling in the ring. Jigsaw charges but gets kicked in the midsection by Roselli. Forearms. Quack dropkicks Jigsaw on top for two. Triple double stomps by the veteran. Nick breaks the count but splashes on his own partners. Bucks and Heart Throbs are having no luck. Back to the white board they go. The crowd apparently approves of this new plan. Thomas attacks Jigsaw from behind. Series of stomps and I guess the new plan is working. Bucks each take one of Jigsaw’s arms and guillotine them across the top rope. Heart Throbs take one of their boas and clothesline Jigsaw. Very creative. Roselli hits an elbow drop. Double back elbows. Kicks on Mantis. Bucks guillotine Mantis’s arms now. Wicked comes in but eats double kicks. Wicked ducks a clothesline but gets raked in the eye. Double back suplex blocked. Throbs sent into the Bucks. Guillotines by the Bucks on their own partners. Totally saw it coming yet I still loved it. Quack and Jigsaw with elbows. Then dropkicks. Bucks take Jigsaw out of the ring. Press slam on Quack by Roselli and Thomas. Nick holds Wicked for his brother. Kick to the midsection by Matt. Heat segment on Quack. Clothesline with the boa fails. Mantis tags and it’s clotheslines for everyone. Full nelson slam hit on Matt for two. Nick saves his brother with a double axehandle. Mantis whipped. Running clothesline on Nick. Wicked also sent in the corner. Series of clotheslines on both men. Heart Throbs stop Nick cause they want to try. Jigsaw has Bryce Remsburg distracted. Heart Throbs can’t figure how to not hit each other. They end up double clotheslining each other. Nick says he’s going to show them how to clothesline people. Boot by Wicked. Step-up by Wicked. Cosmic doom on Nick gets two. Double uranagi by the Heart Throbs. Superkicks by Jigsaw and Quack. Sunset flip by Quack. Nick superkicks Quack and Jigsaw. Matt sunset flips Jigsaw right after the kick and gets two. Thomas heads up. Wicked grabs him. Go 2 Sleepy Hollow blocked. Bucks get cross bodied by Jigsaw. Series of hip tosses. Triple team but Jigsaw recovers with a dropkick that sends Nick and Roselli out of the ring. Triple dives by Quack, Jigsaw, and Mantis. Thomas hits a hip toss back in the ring. Thomas comes off the top rope with a stuffed animal. Go 2 Sleepy Hollow into the la maestral cradle and the three count.

Match Analysis: I’ll always be a huge mark for these atomicos matches Chikara does. The Bucks are known for doing some pretty dumb things and taking a lot of risks, but they seem to genuinely have a lot of fun when they’re in Chikara. They didn’t have a PWG match here, but they had a solid affair with four of Chikara’s best tecnicos. The Heart Throbs would probably not fit in for other indycompanies, but they fit in perfect with Chikara. They provided a little bit of levity and also seemed to have fun. Very good match.

-Sara Del Rey talks about redemption after failing to win the 12 Large Summit. She promises to be the next grand champion. If only.

Match in Five Words or Less: Battle Of Royalty

Match Highlights: It’s great that this match is happening, but it’s unfortunate that much like the Brodie Lee match, the result isn’t in doubt. Some mat work to start. Del Rey kicks the champion in the leg, and Kingston takes a walk. Series of leg kicks and a stomp to the back by Del Rey. To the corners for more stomps. Kicks to the back by Del Rey. Headbutts. She resumes kicking Kingston in leg and back. Kingston tied up between the top and middle rope. More kicks. He spits in Del Rey’s face. She doesn’t skip a beat. Knee drop in the face and back. Slap to the back of the head. Shoving ensues. Del Rey applies a chinlock. Series of kicks on Kingston in the corner. Choking. Left leg submission. Kicks to the leg by Del Rey. Half figure four. Kingston headbutts his way out of the hold. Del Rey fires back with a kick. Leg drop gets a whopping one count. Stomp on the right hand. Shot to the midsection by Kingston. He sells the earlier stomp. Forearms by Del Rey. Kick to the back. Kingston with a boot out of the corner. Knee drop out of the corner. Chop by Kingston. Snapmare into a kick to the back. Clubbering blow to the back and a forearm. Del Rey prevents being posted and sends the champion’s right arm into the steel. Cannonball senton connects. Knee strikes by Del Rey back in the ring. Cross armbreaker! Crowd wants Kingston to tap. Del Rey shifts Kingston to the center of the ring. Boot out of the corner. Kick to the head by Del Rey. Superplex by Del Rey! 1-2-NO! Del Rey kicks the right arm again. Boot misses. Kingston hits an acecrusher. 2K1 bomb. 1-2-NO! Del Rey sends Kingston arm first into the mat. Axe kick. Backfist blocked. Combo kick. 1-2-NO! Kingston put his hand on the bottom rope just in time. Great nearfall. Del Rey goes for a piledriver but settles for a sunset flip. Crossface! Kingston rolls her up for two. Kingston won’t die and reaches the rope. Backfist to the the Future. A second one. 1-2-NO! Del Rey blocks a back drop driver and goes for a series of kicks. Small package. 1-2-NO! Piledriver attempt hits! 1-2-NO! Crowd tells her to it again. Kingston counters into a back drop driver. 1-2-NO! Del Rey ducks but Kingston recovers and hits the Backfist. Sliding D and Kingston retains.

Match Analysis: What an incredible title defense for Kingston, easily the best of the six as he and Del Rey really delivered an outstanding contest. This was as good as match Chikara has had this year and it would have been even better on iPPV with Del Rey winning the title in dramatic fashion. Obviously, with her departure to WWE, that isn’t possible. But I’m glad we got one more classic match from her before she departs. Great psychology with the arm work gave away to some fantastic nearfalls in the end.

Winner (s)/Time/Match Rating/Entertainment Rating: STILL Grand Champion-Eddie Kingston/23:22/****/****1/2

-Kingston pays his respect to Del Rey before exiting.

The Verdict: I really liked the first half of the show, so the first four or so matches nearly make this a show worth buying even without the final two matches. I wasn’t a fan of the trios or straight tag because of how the storylines overwhelmed the match quality, but the atomicos and grand championship match capped this show off tremendously well. I cannot recommend Kingston and Del Rey in particular enough. That match alone is worth spending whatever for the stream, mp4, or DVD. Other than Chikarasaurus Rex, this was my favorite Chikara show of 2012.
