Righteous Reg, a rapper and Youtube host has released his top 250 Black Wrestlers list for 2019. Here is the list along with his editorial on how the list came together. You can follow him on Twitter at https://twitter.com/RighteousReg
In August 2019 the annual PWI500(Pro Wrestling Illustrated) dropped and as always it set the world of Pro Wrestling on fire. The #1 pic this year was Seth Rollins. The internet was obviously goin wild because many thought that Seth Rollins wasn’t the right choice for #1 and I felt the same as I felt the #4 pick Kofi Kingston should have been the #1 pick with the story that he told and more specifically #KofiMania.
By August 2019 I was in the midst of building this platform Black Wrecellence (which started as a podcast but blossomed into a movement)which is a platform to showcase Black Pro Wrestling, talking about all these past, present, and future. Building up and letting people know about all the great wrestlers I come across on the internet, most specifically Twitter. As the PWI drops I’m getting a lot of tweets talking about Representation on the list. My platform pitches Representation for Black pro wrestlers around the world as there is obviously not enough out there. In seeing all the tweets about the list I wanted to conduct my own study on the list and how many Black wrestlers make up the list. I purchased the PWI through their mobile app and started tallying up all the wrestlers. In conclusion I came up with about 30-40 wrestlers OUT OF 500!! Around SIX percent representation in this “prestigious” list. That struck a nerve with me and many of my followers online. I presented the data in a tweet and many of my followers were obviously upset. Through that i stumbled upon a solution, I’ll create my own list!
Starting out I was just gonna have the list be 100 of the best Black pro wrestlers in the world but upon review and some conversations with people close to me we figured the best route would actually be 250 which is half of the PWI500. At first I was taken aback as to if I could even find 250 Black wrestlers out there. I scoured the Internet and social media connecting different dots of wrestlers and companies I was already familiar with and quickly found out that there are even more wrestlers than I even imagined. Before I knew it I had 250 Women and Men from all over the world to comprise the list. The completion of the list actually only took 24 hours as my obsession with Pro Wrestling already had me constantly researching the best of the best so finding the rest of the list was actually easier than expected. Now there are numbers and it actually did start out as a ranking but eventually just ended up being a big list of great wrestlers no ranking. It’s a list about discovery not who is the best because to me they are all the best.
With that came the BW250. I released the list a mere few days after the PWI500 and to tell the truth it blew up way bigger than I expected. I was getting positive and negative feedback from wrestlers, companies, personalities and fans alike. Regardless of everything the most important factor to creating the list was shining a light of so many great Black pro wrestlers that are out in the world on the constant grind. I hope the list is used as discovery for wrestling fans around the world. Representation matters for so many reasons and this shows that we do have the Black talents out there, there are Men and Women who could lead any wrestling company into the future in an new and exciting way.
For the wrestlers who didn’t make it, it all came down to visibility. Most of the list are wrestlers who I have came across in the last year, if you didn’t make the list I probably just didn’t see you, you’ll be there next time. Finding the wrestlers for this list showed me that the list can be even bigger this year. It actually might be possible to create my own 500 in the future, I’m just happy to help.

Have you never seen or heard of Joe Black? In the 2019 Georgia Wrestling History Awards he won the awards for “Technician of the Year” as well as “Feud of the Year.” You can find a lot of Joe Black’s great matches in Southern Honor Wrestling, especially the Dog Collar Match w/ William Huckaby. On Feb. 7th, the next SHW show, he’ll face Sean Legacy in what will surely be an awesome match. Perhaps you should check it out and update your list. Just a thought.
The fact that Tony Johnson, Duke Davis, and Ganon Jones Jr. aren’t on this list is a shame. Look them up on Twitter or as The Mane Event. Some amazing talents coming out of Pittsburgh!
So I guess, Ty Reno and King Blackie aren’t good enough or black enough
