When you pair up two competitors cut from a similar cloth, you get a truly special matchup. At the cross section of violence and mat wrestling, you can find AKIRA and Robert Martyr. These two are set for battle at On Point Wrestling’s Full Circle. And this isn’t just some first time matchup thrown together for spectacle. These two are due for a fight thats been months in the making.

AKIRA

@RedShoesMedia

Nickname: The Death Samurai

OPW Record: 4-2

While known in the Deathmatch circles, AKIRA has shown in the past year that he’s capable of much more. Before the company’s return, AKIRA had already established himself in On Point Wrestling. Ahead of his meteoric rise in mid 2020, he had already racked up wins against Tony Deppen, Reed Bentley and Matt Tremont. Since then, he’s gone onward and upward to companies like GCW, ACTION and ICW No Holds Barred. In October, AKIRA claimed victory over Hallowicked in the company’s return show in Atlantic City. And while Robert Martyr may not be as established as the prior names, AKIRA is looking to hold strong against the up-and-coming Martyr.

Talented but arrogant. A boy who says he’s not a nickname but has 15 of them. Buys his own bullshit more than the people he sells it to.

AKIRA on Robert Martyr

Robert Martyr

@JayLeeAC

Nickname: The Mat Bully, The Poisoned Youth

OPW Record: 1-0

Robert Martyr spent 2021 truly grinding in companies like Paradigm, VxS, and Limitless Wrestling. In his OPW debut, he defeated Tony Deppen, who many consider to be one of the measuring sticks of indie wrestling. Now, in just his second match at On Point, he has the chance to make a statement against AKIRA. While some feel that he was snubbed in the 2021 year end awards, Robert Martyr is dead set on making 2022 his year. And a win here would most definitely light up the fire that Robert is putting under him.

This is a match nobody’s had the balls to pull the trigger on for almost a year, other so called ‘Hardcore’ companies had the chance to go through with it and passed. What I’ve said about AKIRA still stands, This goes deeper than just a match people have been pleading to see for almost a year. This about 2 sides of the same coin. His scars don’t scare me.. At the end of the day, I’ll show that I just want it more.

Robert Martyr on AKIRA & Their Match

The Story So Far

These two combatants have only seen action against each other once before, albeit in No Peace Underground’s 15 Person Body Count Battle. In the end, AKIRA, (along with fellow Rejects Reed Bentley & John Wayne Murdoch) would Powerbomb Robert off the stage to eliminate him. At MurderMania, while not scheduled to compete, a vignette aired with The Mat Bully calling out The Death Samurai. In this video, Martyr shed light on their past together as friends. He cited the “lessons and teachings” AKIRA imparted upon him; that Robert needed the “…scars on [his] back and the bruises on [his] face to get somewhere.” Teachings that Robert said amounted to nothing.  He would close by saying how he would show AKIRA “…what a real wrestler looks like.”

Just over six months later, this matchup would finally come to be under the On Point Wrestling banner. Both men are in a unique situation here with On Point Wrestling being back up and running. While the main event between Kit Osbourne and John Wayne Murdoch will determine the new OPW Champion, this match could very well determine who has the next shot at the Championship. Will Robert Martyr start his 2022 off in a big way by beating AKIRA? Or will AKIRA set back Martyr’s breakout year? You can watch it all go down live on January 8th at 8 PM EST on IWTV.
