In PWPonderings’ latest exclusive interview, Scott Mitchell (@scott44mitchell) sits down with the new owners of PROGRESS Wrestling, Nikki Storm (@nikkistorm08) and Big Damo (@DamoMackle), to talk about all things PROGRESS Wrestling, including taking the promotion over, the upcoming Odyssey Tour, Nikki’s upcoming matches with Myla Grace, Alexxis Falcon, and Kay Lee Ray, and so much more. I want to jump right into it. Both of you guys are the brand-new owners of one of the absolute greatest promotions around on the independent scene today, PROGRESS Wrestling. What went through your head when you decided to take this promotion over?
Big Damo: “Obviously I had to bring it up to Nikki, and she was like, ‘What?’
Nikki Storm: “It was like, what, two days after I had gotten the call. It was like two days later, and Damo was like, ‘Since your schedule is freed up, how do you feel about this?’ We thought about it, and it was the right time, and it was the right fit. We’re the right people for the job.”
Big Damo: “We’re learning on the job, as well. I have experience. I was a promoter before, before WWE, like a long time ago, on a smaller level. So this has been eye-opening, but we have a great staff, and we have a great roster of talent. Nikki and I are just enjoying the experience so far. Yes, there have been a few sleepless nights, and there’s been a couple of anxious days. But genuinely, it’s been such an eye-opener for us because, you know, for me, obviously I’m 41 years old, so my career realistically only has a few years left. Nikki may have a bit longer, but after that, what? I always thought I’d go into coaching, but this is something that came about at a really cool time in our careers. A little early, sure. But when opportunity comes, you have to take it. It just works out that everything aligned.”
Nikki Storm: “The stars aligned. It felt very serendipitous, the timing. Damo says it best: we have a great team at PROGRESS. The talent is there. We want to make PROGRESS Wrestling the number one independent in the world. We got the talent to do that.”
Big Damo: “We have a long way to go. There’s some incredible independents up at the top right now, and we have a long way to go. But it’s one of those things where we have this great staff, and we have this great roster; we would be fools not to take it any further. We’re going to shoot for the stars, but if we miss, at least we’ll get to the clouds, you know?”
You have shown fans some new faces on the PROGRESS Wrestling roster. For me specifically, I was introduced to Cian Noonan & Daz Black. What has it been like to put this roster together and show fans some new, fun, up-and-coming stars that the UK scene has to offer?
Big Damo: “I’ve been very lucky within the last five years since I left WWE; I’ve worked for all these incredible companies across the world. Like Cian Noonan & Daz Black. I wrestled on shows with both of them. I’ve kept an eye on them and was like, I’ll put them over to anyone looking for talent, then I realized, ‘Oh sh*t, that’s me.’ So, when an opportunity came up on our first show that we could potentially do another match. I was like, right, I’ll grab these two guys as quickly as possible, and we’ll use them where we possibly can. They add to an already brilliant roster. We brought back other talents, and now we’re looking into the next stages. We’ve got this awesome tour coming up in September. We’re able to bring in Malakai Black and Xelina, which is really cool. We brought Trent Seven back to PROGRESS. We’re just really excited to bring Myla Grace over; she just left TNA. Kay Lee Ray, fresh out of WWE, and Lio Rush are two of the top guys kicking around now. He really found his form, and we’re delighted to have him. We’ve been very lucky that we’ve had a lot of awesome wrestlers here, and we’re able to bring in others. We’re very lucky we’ve got a lot of friends in the business. My friends, Mansoor and Mace, are coming over. They’re going to come and join us for one of our shows, and that’s really mental. That’s what’s been really cool: we’re able to add them so easily to our roster because we have such a diverse roster anyway, so they could be in so many different scenarios, and they don’t look out of place against this former WWE and AEW talent. So, it is very cool for us. We’ve been able to; Nikki was able to watch our first show online in Manchester, and then she was there for our second show live. So, she got to experience it two different ways, which is very cool. She got to experience it as an online fan and then properly in person. You’ve had a really cool run of it, haven’t you?”
Nikki Storm: “It’s been incredible. 10 years away and you keep your eye on things, and it’s such a truly exciting time. I’m coming back as a co-owner, and I’m also coming back as an independent professional wrestler. So, I’m going to get to wrestle this amazing British women’s wrestling right now. For a long time, the talent has been there, and it’s been a hotbed for women’s wrestling. Now, I get to jump in headfirst into that. And we also get to bring these talents in and give them a platform. Maybe talents who haven’t been seen a lot yet. We get to do that platform, and PROGRESS fans are going to get to come with us and enjoy, really, enjoy these talented amazing performers.”
Big Damo: “We’re able to scout effectively on every show we go to. Nikki came back from Germany there a few weeks ago and said, ‘You need to look at this Jane Nero.’“
Nikki Storm: “Yeah. I was like, we need Jane Nero here. So, kind of scouting.”
Big Damo: “We have a list of people who we want to bring in next and next and next. So it has been very cool. We already have this awesome group already there, especially amongst the women’s roster. Nikki’s going to get a chance to lock in with them, which is even better.”
For fans over in the United States, myself included, what would you tell them about checking out the UK independent wrestling scene, and why they should check out PROGRESS Wrestling specifically?
Big Damo: “Well, honestly, we’re in this situation where there are so many talents who have come through in the last tenure. Obviously, Nikki and I, we were away, and there are ones who were maybe the next batch behind us. But the next two batches after them, the next two generations of talent, have been even better than the generations before. This group available right now in Britain is better than the one we were a part of. They probably have more skill than us. It’s just about getting eyeballs on them. That’s been one of our modus operandi: getting eyes on PROGRESS and these amazing talents. Thankfully that seems to be paying off. But for anyone who wants to know what there is in Britain, it’s a three-ring circus. There’s something for everyone. If you like a bit of comedy, there’s f**king plenty of it. You like strong-style pro wrestling- that’s what I like; there’s a lot of it. There’s everything in between, obviously; European technical wrestling, we got that. The brawling. Everything. Especially the high-flyers; some brilliant young cruiserweights are coming through. What’s even better is there’s this brilliant flock of heavyweights coming through too, which is something; it’s been a while. Obviously, a lot of us left. It’s refreshing coming back and seeing lads ready to take it over. I’m like, ‘Oh no, they’re going to batter me.’ But it’s okay. We’re very excited. Our philosophy is the three-ring circus. We want a bit of everything. We want the acrobats, we want the clowns, we want the strong men. We want a bit of everything. Thankfully we have that at our disposal. If you want to get into PROGRESS Wrestling, buckle up; you’re about to see some of the best wrestling on earth right now. Especially at PROGRESS.”
Nikki Storm: “What I love is, I’m so grateful we have Hooked On Wrestling, the streaming subscription service. It’s not just PROGRESS on there. You have 20 companies from all over the world.”
Big Damo: “As far as China and the USA. There are companies from all over who brought their content to us. It also helped us to have a bit of extra scouting as well. If you’re able to keep your eye on a talent, where the hell have these guys come from? It’s honestly so cool how the internet has changed and makes the world so much smaller. But on Hooked On Wrestling we’re getting to see it up close in person because it’s smacking us right in the face.”
Nikki Storm: “There’s the back catalog. There’s streaming the PROGRESS shows live. You got interviews, the best of it. For fans who, when we announced Malakai Black coming to Edinburgh for the Manchester tour, now they can go watch the best of Malakai Black in PROGRESS. It’s such an incredible time, so yeah, buckle up.”
The next show will be on August 31st when PROGRESS Wrestling presents “Wrestling Over Everything.” Nikki, you will be going one-on-one with the Designer Doll herself, all the way from Australia, Frankie B. What is your mindset heading into this one?
Nikki Storm: “It’s exciting for me because I’m looking at it as a co-owner. For all the reasons you said, that’s why we’re bringing her to PROGRESS. But I need to look at it from a wrestling point of view and from a competitive point of view. Being able to get stuck in there again with the best talent in the world- like, that’s something I can sink my teeth into. She’s the Designer Doll, versus the Best In The Galaxy. So, I’m looking at this like I want to have the best match on the show. I’m looking at it from the wrestler standpoint. It’s almost like I’m going back to being the Best In The Galaxy. I haven’t been this character in 10 years. So, how does this woman hold up against people in 2026? It’s going to hold up really well because of how talented I am. Frankie B, I think you know, this is why it’s exciting. We’re giving Frankie B that platform, but she’s also bringing more eyes to us. People in Australia who have followed Frankie B’s career.”
Big Damo: “She’s also had some matches and stuff for Ring Of Honor. So, it’s another opportunity for her to cut her teeth in Britain. These are fantastic rosters. Hopefully it’s a good opportunity for her, good experience, and hopefully she’ll get a lot from it as well. We’re heading towards a sold-out show there, so we’re very excited. Everybody is looking forward to seeing Frankie B and Nikki tear it up.”
Nikki Storm: “It’s exciting. I keep saying that, but it genuinely is. There are so many exciting things happening, so that was the cherry on top. Yesterday we announced myself versus Frankie B. So, Frankie B, you better bring it, girl.”
You also have the big PROGRESS Tour in September. September 4th in Edinburgh, September 5th in Leeds, and September 6th right back in Manchester. What are both of your mindsets heading into this weekend?
Big Damo: “Survive.”
Nikki Storm: “The show in Edinburgh on September 4th is so important. This is the first time PROGRESS has run in Scotland. It’s actually my first time wrestling in Scotland as Nikki Storm in 10 years, and I’m wrestling Myla Grace, who’s someone who, from the very first moment I trained with her, I felt something. We clicked. I really think so highly of her in-ring ability. She has great presence, great charisma, great look, great promos. So special. To be back in Edinburgh, where we first got together, he was living there. I ended up falling in love with this guy because that’s where we fell in love and we were dating. There’s something so special about Edinburgh. We’re pumped. Then we announced Malakai Black.”
Big Damo: “We just announced Malakai Black is taking on Dijak. What’s the biggest match we could think of doing in Edinburgh?”
Nikki Storm: “Besides The Best In The Galaxy.”
Big Damo: “Besides Nikki Storm. Genuinely, Dijak seems like the perfect choice for Malakai Black’s first match back on the independents and first match back in Europe since WWE and AEW. So, we’re over the moon. They’re going to tear it up. I watched them wrestle in NXT in 2018 on a random house show, and it was one of the best things I’ve ever seen. So, I’m so excited to be able to promote it. I think Scotland is going to be over the moon for this match. We wrote in the blurb that this is probably going to be one of the best matches you ever see live. Because it is. We’re very excited. I know both competitors are over the moon to face each other again, which is awesome. We don’t always, you aren’t always able to check every box. But this is one of those where both guys are delighted about it; we’re delighted about it. Everybody’s excited. It’s very awesome. Lio Rush and Charles Crowley will team up against KOE in Scotland, a great tag team, whom I helped train. I trained the elder brother, Paul. It’s going to be really interesting to see how they get on with Lio and Crowley, two of the most bonkers characters. That’ll be really interesting to say the least.”
Nikki Storm: “That’s how you kick off The Odyssey Tour. That’s how you kick it off.”
Big Damo: “I don’t know if we announced this yet; I don’t care. I can say what I want. But Luke Jacobs will be taking on Mark Coffey, which will be awesome. Those are two absolutely incredible wrestlers who haven’t been able to fight yet. It’s really cool to have Jacobs up in Scotland, and having him face Mark Coffey will be awesome. Mark’s again one of the lads we trained a long time ago and who just became an incredible wrestler. He opened a training school right outside Glasgow in Scotland. So, he’s really looking forward to the next generation and helping the next generation. Him vs. Luke will be awesome to host for us. We’re delighted about that.”
Of course I can’t bring up that weekend without bringing up Malakai Black vs. Donovan Dijak on Friday, September 4th. What can fans expect from this one?
Big Damo: “He’s (Malakai Black) incredible. He’s a martial artist, as well. I think people forget this a lot of the time, but he’s super agile as well and super intricate. His brain works faster than everybody else’s. It’ll be so awesome for him to bring this new energy that he’s really excited to bring with him to Scotland. He spent a lot of time in Scotland, so this means a little bit to him as well. This will be a lot of fun for us. It’s going to be fun to see him just go enjoy it again. This is something that Nikki is now doing and something I did five years ago. Speaking to him, we were like, ‘Listen, we just want to go out there and have a ball.’ That’s all we ask of him. And we know that Dijak is definitely going to be the right person. Dijak is firing on all cylinders. You see him all over. He’s on MLW. I’ll be on a show in September in India with him, as well. He’s literally everywhere. He’s an incredible talent. In my opinion, he’s probably the best heavyweight kicking around at the minute. He’s absolutely incredible. He got himself into the best shape of his life as well. His promos are on fire. He’s ticking every box himself. We’re just excited to get him at this point, where he is doing so bloody well. It just seemed to come together very nicely. I wish I could say it was all part of the plan, but it all just fell into place way more than anything in the best possible way.”
Nikki, you will be facing off against three of the absolute best of the best, Myla Grace, Alexxis Falcon, and Kay Lee Ray, respectively. What is your mindset looking at this weekend?
Nikki Storm: “I’ve known Kay Lee for like 18 years. I can’t say how excited I am for this match. Kay Lee is one of the best wrestlers in the world. She gets to show the world that. For myself, when I look at those three opponents – Myla Grace, Alexxis Falcon, and Kay Lee Ray – I’m coming in as Nikki Storm, the ‘Best In The Galaxy.’ When you call yourself the ‘Best In The Galaxy, ’ you’ve given yourself a big name to live up to. So for me, that chip on my shoulder, that never left. I may have been gone off the scene for 10 years, but that drive never leaves you. That passion never leaves you. For me, I’m looking at this like I really have a lot to prove. I don’t really care about anyone else, in that way, but I need to prove it to myself. I’m looking at these matches, and I’m trying to reclaim my top spot in independent wrestling. In the past 10 years, to have seen it progress so much, it’s a challenge I’m putting on myself to be the same Nikki Storm that left 10 years ago. That Nikki Storm is now back and has a massive point to prove and has a chip on her shoulder. I always had a chip on my shoulder. That’s why I ended up getting to where I am, and it’s why I am where I am in this industry. I have this wealth of experience, and everything I’ve learned not just over the past 10 years but also the past 18 years; now I get the chance to prove that. I get the chance to prove that against the best. So, there’s nothing cooler. I have a lot to prove. You can’t call yourself the ‘Best In The Galaxy’ and not deliver. So, this is on me to deliver. Not even just on me as a co-owner of PROGRESS. I have a lot to prove here as an independent wrestler again. I have a lot to sink my teeth into, and those three talents, we’re in for a treat. Those fans in Leeds, Edinburgh, and Manchester. That’s a dream match, Kay Lee and me. We both got into wrestling at the same time. We both went to Japan. We both went to Shimmer. We both competed against each other, pushed each other, and inspired each other to be better. We were always chasing each other. Then, we both ended up in WWE. We’re both back on the scene, and again, we’re both competing against each other most healthily. We’re both back to challenging each other. That’s how you get to be the best, by pushing each other. She’s the best in the world. Alexxis Falcon. It haunts me. Her personality. We got so many dream matches now I get to tick off. These girls I spent the last ten years watching; I get to compete against them now. I have my whole bunch of dream matches, and I’ll get to work through them, and the fans will get to enjoy that with me. I couldn’t ask to be in a better position, Scott.”
The Odyssey Tour will conclude with events on Saturday, September 12th in Bournemouth, and Sunday, September 13th in Birmingham. What can we expect from those shows?
Big Damo: “… This is like a debut for us in Bournemouth. I was there a long time ago for ICW. So, it’ll be very cool coming in as a part of the new PROGRESS, and it’ll be very cool to bring a match of that standard (Lio Rush vs. Spike Trivet), and really set the tone for the rest of the show.”
Nikki Storm: “We got Birmingham, as well. We just announced Trent Seven.”
Big Damo: “Trent is one of my best friends in wrestling today, and a bloody nightmare. He’s an incredible talent. He’s probably one of the best main event wrestlers around, and the fact that he’s kicking around still here in Britain is madness to me. I’m amazed that he’s available to us. I always say if I was running a big company, I’d be using him, but I am, so I will.”
Nikki Storm: “When I was at OTT, the first night I was back. I came down the stairs at the OTT show, and nobody knew that I was going to be there. The first person I saw was Trent, and he gave me this big hug. Just to hear him, it was just such a- being the very first person I saw, it was just really nice. I’ll be doing Bournemouth and Birmingham as well. So, I’m pumped. It’s going to be like a five-day tour of madness. I can’t wait to see those fans. I love Bournemouth. I love that area. We’d go there in WWE & NXT as well, and I just love that area. Birmingham, we have some really good friends from Birmingham. I’m really excited for those five cities. Obviously Edinburgh because I’m Scottish. When it comes to Leeds, Manchester, Bournemouth and Birmingham, I really enjoy all of those cities.”
Big Damo: “We’re going to make a bit more of a bigger deal in Manchester. It’s the venue we used to stream many times. We’re going to be streaming that live on Hooked On Wrestling, as well. We’re going to be announcing some really banger matches over the next couple of days. It’ll make people very happy.”
Nikki Storm: “The Odyssey Tour is going to be ‘lit,’ as the kids say today. LIT. L. I. T.”
What are your goals for PROGRESS Wrestling, looking ahead?
Nikki Storm: “We want to continue to give the platform to up-and-coming talent as well. We want to keep that three-ring circus; we want a little bit of everything.”
Big Damo: “Aggression. That’s been the major thing I want to see. There’s been some great matches. One or two matches will really have that balls-to-the-wall. I kind of want that to be like six matches.”
Nikki Storm: “That kind of graps. When you think of British Wrestling and European wrestling, you think of the graps. I love the soap opera element and the outlandish characters. I love the over-the-topness. I loved Sunset Beach growing up. I love the characters. But you need to balance that with this great, intense, in-ring style. There needs to be a balance. That’s what we want to work on: that balance. We want to continue to highlight the women’s wrestling scene. We want to continue to highlight the up-and-coming talent, the women’s division. Tag team wrestling. I always loved tag team wrestling. I always loved bouncing off Sanity, bouncing off Alexa Bliss, bouncing off Rhea Ripley, bouncing off the Wyatt Sicks. I always love bouncing off people. I was a Tag Team Champion three times. I opened WrestleMania in 2020 and won the Tag Team Championships from the Kabuki Warriors. Asuka & Kairi Sane. Two of the absolute best wrestlers in the world. Asuka and Kairi, I had so much fun wrestling Kairi Sane. She and I both love wrestling and our characters. We got to have so much fun. Asuka and I had that Last Woman Standing match all those years back in NXT. I’m still super proud of it. I love tag team wrestling. We want to continue to scout and find these amazing tag teams. We have MXM taking on Sunshine Machine. Lykos Gym. The tag team wrestling. The women’s wrestling.”
Big Damo: “Our goal is we want to keep grinding in Manchester. Manchester means a lot to us for different reasons. We want to try to use this tour to see if there is a love for PROGRESS in these towns; can we come back regularly? Then we start looking at other towns across the UK, maybe into Ireland, maybe into Europe. There are a lot of promoters who have already reached out and want to work together to put on joint shows in Europe. Which we’re very excited about that. There have also been talks with Australia; there have been talks with the USA as well. So, we’re very excited. All this can’t happen right away. But give us a couple of years to get this company up and running.”
Nikki Storm: “Yes, I know it’s a cliché, but it’s not a sprint; it’s a marathon. We’re in this for the long haul. But we are really looking for collaboration and having these great relationships all over the world. When one company does well, everyone does well. We just want to see, obviously, PROGRESS shows to be the best, but we just want shows everywhere to be the best. We want OTT, Future Shock, ICW, RevPro; we want wrestling to be great everywhere. The people who win are the fans. The people who win are the talent.”
Big Damo: “We were so blessed we came through the boom in British wrestling. For myself it was RevPro and ICW. For Nikki it was EVE and Shimmer in America, and Stardom in Japan. There were so many of these companies kicking ass at the same time. We feel that it’s coming again. I feel like we’re on the precipice.”
Nikki Storm: “When I started with Shimmer, they would work with other women’s companies or companies who put on all-women’s shows, like AIW in Cleveland, OH, and companies in Florida. I benefited because I could basically go on these tours, and that was based on these companies working together. If we could do that for these talents, British wrestling, wrestling as a whole, is in a great place.”
Nikki, not only are you a very accomplished pro wrestler, but you also recently got your PhD, and you also have a newsletter called “Notes From Nik” available on Substack. What went into you wanting to create this and accomplish this?
Nikki Storm: “Since I was a little girl, I was just incredibly driven and incredibly ambitious. It never really went away. For me, I always believe in being a well-rounded wrestler, but I also believe in being a well-rounded person. For me, the newsletter is powered by Beehiiv, and a new issue went up on Tuesday at 9 AM. I see the newsletter as a way to give back to fans. I really wouldn’t be where I am today without the support of the fans. They’ve supported me for the past 18 years, 10 years. The newsletter is a way for me to give back to the fans. They’ve always seen me play these crazy characters. Sanity Nikki, ASH Nikki, Abby the Witch, Bliss Cross Applesauce. They’ve seen me play characters, but I don’t know if they ever got the chance to know me as a person. So, this is a fun way for me to engage, give back, and find out what they like, and it’s helping my writing. When you write for a newsletter, you do so in that way. I’m in the middle of doing a PhD; I’m halfway done. So, writing academically is different from writing publicly. When you write about your academics publicly, that’s a different challenge. I feel like I’m constantly challenging myself and getting my brain working, and there have been times when I write something for my newsletter, and then it helps my thesis project, and vice versa. There are things I write for my thesis that I can write in my newsletter that let people know what my thesis is about and the journey that I’m on. It’s just a way to give back to the fans. I wouldn’t be where I am without their support. I think of myself as a well-rounded person. I always had that drive and passion, and it never went away, so, you know, keep exploring, and it all ties together. The PhD is about women’s wrestling. The newsletter features independent women’s wrestling. For this issue, top five, I asked someone five questions to put the highlight on talent. To me, it all ties together: the Best In The Galaxy.”
Looking ahead, what are your future goals?
Nikki Storm: “For myself, we spoke about our goals for PROGRESS, but for myself, I was fortunate enough to see the world before WWE. I was then fortunate enough to be in WWE and get to travel the world with some of my best friends and make these friendships with Sarah Schreiber, Giulia, and Candice LeRae. It was these people I got to spend time with and hang out with. If it wasn’t for being in WWE for the past ten years, I may have met Giulia in a different way or Sarah Schreiber in a different way. But paths crossed, and I was fortunate enough to see the world with WWE. Now, I get to see the world again. I want to go back to Australia; I want to go back to Japan. I got to do this incredible set of tapings with Maple Leaf Pro in Canada. I want to see more of that. I keep writing: what’s the next goal? If your dreams don’t scare you, it’s not big enough. I don’t like using the word dream, because I do believe more in goals, aims, and missions. But I do feel there is a lot of truth in that. I want to be everywhere all at once, and want to balance that with being the best co-owner I can be at PROGRESS, and balance that with getting a PhD, and publishing the book about women’s wrestling. There are a lot of goals I have, and they’re all kind of terrifying. But I also know I’ll do it. For me, I want to see the world again. I’m not the same person I was when I was 23. I have ten years of experience on television now, and 18 years of experience in this crazy industry. I want to do the next 10 years now and see the world again as I see it through different eyes. I’m wiser. That’s important to me. Just continuing to have these experiences and pushing myself. Whether pushing myself and learning new things as an owner, or learning new things academically on this new research route, or pushing myself when I’m wrestling people like Kay Lee Ray, Myla Grace, and Alexxis Falcon. I want to wrestle. I want to have these experiences and continue living every day to the fullest. Wrestling lets me do that. I’m so blessed to be in this industry and be a part of that. I met Damo; I met my husband through wrestling. It’s just given me so much. I just want to give back to the industry that has given me so much.”
The independent wrestling scene is alive and well all over the world. Are there any names that either of you would like to face?
Nikki Storm: “I would love the chance to wrestle Athena again. Athena and I wrestled back at Shimmer, then we wrestled on NXT a bunch. We didn’t do a whole lot on RAW and SmackDown together, but you know, Athena is someone who’s an incredible talent. We always have really amazing chemistry. That’s definitely someone. I’m wrestling at MPX in Texas on September 18th, and I could have jumped at the chance. Even though I’m not wrestling Athena on the show, I’m wrestling Vert Vixen for the MPX Women’s Championship. The chance to work with Athena again in some capacity- I jumped at it. That’s someone I definitely want to lock up with again in the squared circle. Rhio. I just named her. Rhio is someone I’m really wanting to go against. Kairi Sane. I’d love to wrestle her on the independents in a completely different environment. I was able to wrestle Dani Luna recently. She’s a powerhouse. Gisele Shaw- that’s another name. I’d love to have a singles match with Gisele. Thunder Rosa. That’s another one.
