Due to me feeling like crap we’re a day late this week…but better late than never i guess! Hit or Miss Volume 6 is here! Joining me for some discussion on ROH, PWG, Chikara and Dragon Gate USA are Matt Waters and Chris GST. Read on to see what we discuss!
Hit or Miss: Losing Cibernetico is the beginning of the end for the BDK
Matt Waters: Hit. Chikara have gotten some small wins here and there, but this was the second major blow they’ve dealt the BDK after the Young Lions Cup. All year Tursas has stood tall (literally), and not only was he knocked down, he was pinned straight-up. I was actually a little upset to read that Ares & Claudio went back to the same routine they’ve been using all year to retain against the Portal. I thought it would have been a great idea to have them concede a fall to show wavering confidence as we head to the season finale.
Chris GST: Hit. As stated a few times from many, the BDK should not as strong as they were, if even around when the next season starts.   Sure the players might still be around, but I would say that Cibernetico is the beginning of the end to one of the best laid out stories of 2010.  Wish some other companies could have this kind of continuity.

Hit or Miss: Colt Cabana and El Generico will both move into the World Title picture within 6 months
MW: Hit. Cabana’s victory over Corino tells me he’s already headed back there (much to my chagrin), and Generico is so good in the ring that he surely can’t be denied chances to get in the ring with the main event talent once he’s done with Steen.
CG: Hit. I’m gonna say I could see it.  Cabana in the latest video wire stated that we are going to start seeing, “best Cabana” we could see and I do believe that should lead to the world title.  El Generico still has issues with Steen but seeing him in the main event circle for the title is already a given IMO.

Hit or Miss: The All Night Express will flounder and eventually fail without A Double
MW: Miss. Their success depends entirely on the Kings of Wrestling in my opinion. If Josh Raymond truly has decided to call it quits and the Wolves are done then there are only four regular teams left in ROH, one of them being the heel champions. There’s simply not a lot of room for the ANX to operate anymore, so they’re going to keep having this feud with the Briscoes and then working with Cole & O’Reilly. But that has nothing to do with Aries’ involvement. These two are far too talented to fail on their own merits, and they’re over with the crowd regardless.
CG: Miss. A Double was important to their formation, but now I do see the crowds behind both men even without A Double around.  Kenny King has future of ROH pretty much tatooed on him while Rhett Titus could be a fun TV champion and upper mid carder for ROH and possibly beyond, I won’t stifle the guy.  Hell I used to hate his gimmick but it’s grown on me and if he can put on decent matches that get him over, then he can have a good future in ROH.

Hit or Miss: Steve Corino will be gone from ROH after 2010
MW: Miss. They’re very thin on wrestlers at the moment, and I think he’s proven this year that there’s still plenty left in his tank. He’s a fantastic supporting character and not in the least bit afraid to put someone else over. If they can’t find him someone to work with then that’s kind of disappointing.
CG: Hit. I will say after this Steen business is concluded that we might not see him around, but this is a slight hit and really not one I want to see come to fruition. Hell if Steen and Corino give KoW a great match, why not keep them around to fill out the tag team division that has been streamlined a bit .

Hit or Miss: Roddy Strong will hold the ROH Title longer than Claudio Castagnoli will hold the PWG Title
MW: Miss. This answer is only based off this moment in time. The House of Truth may have collapsed in on itself, Davey Richards is white-hot with the fans, and Roddy has almost been a non-factor so far. Meanwhile PWG have been desperate for a stable long-term champion after Omega and Richards and every match Claudio has will be fresh, so it would be in their interest to squeeze as many of them as they can out of him. But Strong has yet to defend his belt, and Truth Martini could recruit more talent to create a Strong group, so time will tell.
CG: Miss. I see Claudio holding it past Dec as PWG really should try to have a stable champion for a little bit.  Roderick Strong though seemingly should lose it at FB2010 but that doesn’t mean he won’t get it back.
4 for 5

Hit or Miss: DGUSA’s Bushido will be a must see show
MW: Hit. If nothing else, it’s always a must-see when a big promotion debuts a new business avenue like this. I’d call it a must-see if Chikara or PWG held an iPPV… maybe even Evolve too. Cima & Genki in a tag match didn’t seem the greatest use of them at first, but Gabe has put together a solid card, from the involvement of Austin Aries and Homicide, the culmination of Jacobs/Moxley, the American draft, and the proven winner of BxB vs Shingo. It sucks for the Portal, but I also think that them getting murdered by Akebono and Brodie will be funny if kept short.
CG: Hit. For me it’s a must see with this drafting issue, Austin Aries making his debut, you got Homicide coming in, BxB Hulk vs. Shingo to me is going to be awesome as is CIMA & Genki Horiguchi vs. YAMATO & Akira Tozawa.

  1. Tottaly agree with Matt in every way, exept Strong lossing the belt at Final Battle. It would be a wast of time and talent if he losses the title now, even if the new Champ’s name is Davey Richards.

  2. I’m glad you agree. I didn’t actually say he’d lose it at Final Battle though, and if he does I think it’ll be a slap in the face to his loyalty to the company. I think he’ll retain via cheating and then lose the belt around April, whereas I can see Claudio still being PWG champion a year from now if his schedule permits.

  3. I would also have to say that while neither Matt nor I are saying that Roderick should, it is just that it seems Ring of Honor and many of the fans feel that they are moving towards that ending. But we’ll have to see. I don’t feel that it will mimic FB 2009 where when Black didn’t win the crowd just turned on ROH. I could see a ROH where Strong retained at FB 2010 and we get a tremendous feud for the first 3 months of 2011.

  4. I don’t know about Strong holding on to it or not. It seems like everything is primed for him to drop the belt to Davey Richards, but I said that a couple of years ago about Tyler Black, and it took him another year to finally win. I feel like they almost have to give Richards the belt here, or the legion of fickle ROH fans will turn on him the same way they did with Black. On the other hand, I think the fact that Strong will only be given a transitional reign after all these years with the company is really unfair to him. My heart wants a Strong win, but my head doesn’t see it.

  5. Definitely agree. Though as I said above, I don’t think that FB 2010 would suffer the same as FB 2009 when we all felt that Tyler should have won the belt. Hell he should have been in at FB 2008.

  6. I’m sorry if I didn’t get your point right, english isn’t my mother tounge and so it’s a problem to get everything in the right way you know 😉 I just think Strong losing the title would not just be a slap in the face to him but at the title as well. I hope for a defense at FB at least and as Matt said a title change around April 😉
Thank you both for replay, allways nice to read on pwp!

  7. It’s going to be difficult. Roddy has done nothing as champion yet so we don’t know if he’s good or bad in the role which makes me think there’s just no way on earth they’ll take it away from him so early. But if it goes to a draw or there’s any kind of foreign object or low blow type situation the fans will hate on it big time. Could Roddy beat Davey straight up? Nigel made a living off simply being better than faces and the fans gave him begrudging respect so we could see that repeated here with Roderick.
Or, outside shot: Homicide interferes and destroys Davey because he’s bitter that he didn’t get the title shot in NYC.
