A solid B show followed by some of Tyler Black’s best showcased on one DVD!
-Taped from Plymouth, Massachusetts
-Your hosts are Kevin Kelly and Dave Prazak
-Eddie Edwards has a weekend of the Embassy. I’m so sorry for him. Least he’s actually defending the television title twice this weekend. It’s Edwards’ hometown as well. If this was WWE, he’d be jobbing for sure.
-ROH World Televison Championship: Eddie Edwards (champion) vs. Erick Stevens (w/Prince Nana and Mr. Ernesto Osiris)
Least he’s not going seven months before defending the title again.  I will forgo my rule about the Embassy because it’s Erick Stevens, and he’s usually good for a three star match. Lock-up and the two men get tangled in the corner. Shoulder tackle by Stevens. Off the ropes. Leg lariat by the champion. Chop in the corner. Head first into the corner head first. Another chop. Stevens sends Edwards into the corner and nails a chop. Edwards hits another chop. Irish whip and a back elbow. Headbutt. Irish whip. Edwards nails a kick. Stevens catches Edwards and hits a samoan drop. Series of stomps. Choking. Nana calls Edwards Janetty. Nice bit of business there based on who Edwards’ partner is. Stevens continues choking the champion along the middle rope. Cheap shots by Ernesto and Nana. Vertical suplex. Knee strikes. Right hand, stomp, and more choking. Crowd is really into this match. Good for them. Series of shots to the midsection. Chop by Edwards. Headbutt by Stevens. Wrings the arm and hits a Russian legsweep. Crucifix submission. Edwards headbutts his way out of the hold. Tries to apply the Achilles lock. Stevens ducks a kick and hits a release German suplex. Choo choo. Off the ropes but Edwards hits a superkick. Stevens hits a cutter and LARIAT! 1-2-NO! Doctor bomb turned into a rana. Achillies lock! Nana on the apron. Edwards goes after him. Stevens hits a knee. Goes for gonorrhea. Backslide by Edwards gets him a victory and a big television title defense.
-Winner (s)/Time/Rating: STILL World Television Champion- Eddie Edwards/10:59/***1/4
-A fine way to open the show. I really dug this match. Stevens showed a ton of personality and charisma for the first time that I can remember as a heel. Edwards as the hometown boy likely helped the crowd heat. Good way to start the show and I hope this is a sign of things to come.
-Grizzly Redwood vs. Brutal Bob Evans
UGH! No buys. The nicest thing I can say about Bob Evans is I love his restaurants. This match is a big old bag of whatever. Evans looks to be about 100 years old, but the announcers at least put him over by saying he’s a good trainer of wrestlers. We get a fake fan jumping the guard rail in what will be the low light of the evening. Evans hits a backbreaker on the apron before screaming at the crowd. Well, at least one of those two things is accurate. Redwood fights back. Second rope bulldog. Powerslam by Evans. Goes for a running powerslam. Redwood rolls him up and gets three.
-Winner (s)/Time/Rating: Grizzly Redwood/5:19/*
Ring of Honor needs to stop wasting their actual DVD tapings on matches like this. It is a complete waste of time, and they never lead to anything. It also kills what was once a hot crowd because the result is obvious.
-Austin Aries vs. Kyle O’Reilly
O’Reilly has been squashed a couple of times on HDNet, but this is his biggest opportunity to date. Aries comes out with a really hot girl. Did he get a hooker before being taken out of the company? A fine going away present if I’ve ever seen one if that’s the case. Have a seat before reading the next sentence. Austin Aries cuts a promo before the match. He makes a lot of sexual innuendos before making fun of Mr. O’Reilly. Aries says he used to kick real hard just like O‘Reilly. Kevin Kelly calls the comments controversial. Aries out wrestles O’Reilly to start. Knee to the midsection. Snapmare and a kick to the back. Aries to the outside once again. Lock-up takes both men in the corner. Shoulder tackle and a series of chops. Whip but O’Reilly reverses. Aries comes off with a back elbow off the second rope. He takes a victory lap. Lock-up goes to the corner. Chop misses. O’Reilly with some of his own. Forearm. Aries takes him over. O’Reilly with a headscissors. Aries out with a dropkick. Has O’Reilly never watched Ring of Honor. Kick to the midsection by Aries. Elbow drop. Stomps. Pulls him out by the hair. O’Reilly even takes some heckling from the girl. O’Reilly over on a whip. Ducks underneath. Kick combination sends Aries down. Side headlock takeover. Headscissors. O’Reilly nails Aries with a kick to the chest. Aries outside the ring. O’Reilly chases him. Aries hits a knee. O’Reilly whips Aries into the guard rail. Running dropkick and the crowd starts getting behind the youngster. Irish whip and a knee to the midsection. Kick to the back. Northern lights suplex. Into a fireman’s carry. Aries out. Backrake. O’Reilly hits a clothesline that sends Aries end over end. Tornado DDT for two. O’Reilly climbs to the top rope. Splash misses.Running dropick. Brainbuster. 1-2-NO! Kick to the head. Last chancery leads to O’Reilly tapping out.
-Winner (s)/Time/Rating: Austin Aries/7:39/**3/4
-A good sprint. They did a lot with the time they were given. Aries gave O’Reilly enough offense to make sure he didn’t look like a complete jobber. I hope to see more of O’Reilly’s work here in Ring of Honor.
-First Blood: The Embassy (Necro Butcher and Shawn Daivari w/Prince Nana and Mr. Ernesto Osiris) vs. Kevin Steen and Steve Corino
I feel like this is something TNA would do. A stipulation match for no reason. I know Jim Cornette made a deal with Prince Nana for some television title matches, but this doesn’t feel like something special. A match such as this should be saved for blood feuds and grudge matches.  It’s especially stupid because the crowd is going to cheer for Steen and Corino because they’re so much cooler and better. Steen and Nana go back and forth on the microphone. Should have done it for ten more minutes. Would have been preferable to an actual match. Steen tells Daivari to get out of dodge. It’s on. Necro starts the proceedings with a kick to Steen. Absolute chaos outside the ring. Back and forth they go. Chairs, tables, ring bells everywhere. Corino uses the ring bell against Daivari’s groin. Necro lifts the mats and dumps them on Steen. Daivari sent into the table. The match might not be good in theory, but this is the most exciting start to an Embassy match I’ve seen in months. Brawl continues.  Series of stomps by Necro while Corino is under the mat. Steen uses Ernesto’s cane. Pair of superkicks by Steen on Necro. Cannonball. Corino throws a chair in the ring. Steen bites Daivari. Necro attempts to use asome sort of sharp object. Corino nails Daivari with some sort of drink. Geeks put ringside back together as Daivari battles with Corino. Corino with an abdominal stretch. Thumb in the ass. Corino and Steen continues having their own fun outside the ring. Necro brings a beer bottle into the proceedings. Steen brings a chain in the ring and chokes Necro. He ties him up some more. Corino breaks the beer bottle. Shot to Necro with it. Referee Paul Turner sees bleeding and calls for the bell.
-Winner (s)/Time/Rating: Kevin Steen and Necro Butcher/6:52/**3/4
-I feel dirty saying this, but I enjoyed this match a lot. It didn’t go too long, was never boring, and had a clean ending. The very concept of these four men wrestling in a stipulation match is still retarded, but it was better than watching them have an average wrestling match as it turned over.  Amazing how matches somehow exceed expectations sometimes. At least the right team won too. Nice set-up for the next night’s chain match
-All Night Express (Kenny King and Rhett Titus w/Austin Aries) vs, Matt Taven and Sid Reeves
More jobbers! Hooray! Taven at least wears his name on the side of the tights. Very much appreciated. Code of Honor followed before All Night Express take advantage.  They control the early portion of the match, and we have an immediate heat segment on Taven. Crowd actually gets behind the local jobbers. Up and over goes Taven. Back elbow. He falls off the top rope. Woof. He’s done. Taven gets back on offense and doesn’t screw anything else up. Reeves in. He’s a very short pugish looking dude.Big back drop and into the corner for a shoulder tackle. Charge misses. Forearm by Reeves but King pulls him down and sends him into the barricade. Double team kicks on the outside of the ring. Continues heat segment on Reeves. Titus off the rope. Reeves with a one arm powerbomb. Double tags. Spin kick by Taven. Swinging neckbreaker. Quebrada for two. Forearm by Titus. Up and over. King with shotgun knees. Rocker dropper by Titus. Reeves takes a turn. Eats multiple kicks. All Night Express looking fairly decent for once. Coronation by King. Outsider’s Edge by Titus. Double pin.
-Winner (s)/Time/Rating: All Night Express/6:21/*1/2

Strong jaw jacks with a fan. Irish whip and a shoulder tackle by Bennett. Roll-up into an O’Connor roll. Strong hits a leg lariat. First chop of the match. Bennett sent outside. Another vicious chop. -Winner (s)/Time/Rating: Roderick Strong/9:41/**1/2
-A solid, technically sound match that would not have bothered me if not for either guy understanding his role. Strong wrestled as a babyface. Bennett wrestled as a heel. The slots should have been reversed, especially considering Strong’s challenge for the ROH world title the next night.  I’m not sure what Bennett is going to be in the future, but he should have at least been a babyface for this match.
-ROH World Tag Team Championship: Kings of Wrestling (Chris Hero and Claudio Castagnoli w/Shane Hagadorn) vs. Colt Cabana and El Generico
This raises an interesting question. What the hell was the point of Tag Wars 2010 if Cabana and Generico (who lost in Richmond in the semifinals to the Embassy of all teams) are simply getting a title shot the next month. Cabana and Hero start out with a feeling out process. Doesn’t last as Claudio tags. Headbutt to the midsection. Sunset flip for two. Cabana over into a nearfall of his own. Hero in once again. Hero calms the audience down, while Hero tries getting them to cheer. Hero goes outside and isn’t happy. Lock-up. Generico off the top with an elbow to the left arm. Shot by Hero. Claudio with clubbering blows. Grabs the arm and drives the knee multiple times. Irish whip. Generico gets his boot up. Series of armdrags. Running forearm. -Winner (s)/Time/Rating: 13:28/***1/4
-The action was excellent throughout because you had four stellar wrestlers. I didn’t like the idea of Generico and Cabana just getting a title shot after the Tag Wars 2010. I’m also not a fan of them simply jobbing clean the night before a huge chain match. Even though Cabana and Generico won the chain match and did lose to the champions, it’s the kind of parity booking that drives me insane. Least this was a fun, easy match to watch.
-Non-title: Tyler Black (ROH world champion) vs. Christopher Daniels
Thankfully, Jim Cornette doesn’t come down to offer Tyler Black the opportunity to defend the world title. Crowd chants “future jobber.” Way to treat one of your own Ring of Honor fans. “NXT” chants. I bet NXT on the internet STILL draws more viewers than ROH on HDNet. Takes over a minute before contact is made. “You can’t see us” and “Cena sucks” chants. Cena might suck, but he’s probably going to generate more money in merch than Ring of Honor will this year. Some basic mat wrestling to start. Daniels with a hip toss, so Black heads outside. Black says he didn’t sell out but took a better job. Yup. Lock-up into the corner. Black with shoulder blocks followed by a cheap jab. Irish whip. Daniels with a shoulder tackle off an Irish whip. Daniels stands on Black’s neck. Jabs and another whip. Leg lariat. Black powders. Test of strength… no. Black with a kick and series of punches. Choking along the middle rope. Whip but a dropkick misses. A second attempt fails. A third attempts leads to Daniels getting a roll-up After two more flash pins, Black leaves the ring. He gets on the microphone and waits for the crowd to shut up. Black says he doesn’t have to deal with Daniels or anything else. He talks about going home. He gives out some high fives. Daniels goes through the crowd, runs around through the entrance way and restarts the match. Okay, THAT was cool. He maintains the advantage on the outside of the ring. Back in the ring. Black can’t escape. Back suplex for two. Head first into the turnbuckle. All four turnbuckles in fact. Stomps in the corner. Whip in the corner. Black takes him over. Daniels lands hard on the floor. Black does damage on the floor. Daniels sent head first into the apron. Cover for two. more choking on the middle rope. Short right hand. Black punches at the face of Daniels. Slap to the face. Daniels fire back at the midsection. Off the ropes. Black catches Daniels with a forearm. Hard into the barricade twice. Vertical suplex. Black into the ring. He wants a countout. Daniels appears to be bleeding from the nose. Daniels comes in at 19. Black covers for two. Snapmare followed by a kick to the back. Chinlock. Elbows by Daniels. Boot to the face. Strike exchange. Series of forearms by Daniels. Uranagi by Black. He teases the BME but instead applies the STFU after telling Daniels he can’t see him. Daniels finally reaches the ropes.  Black kicks Daniels outside. Daniels crawls back on the apron. They battle. Kick by Black. Goes for a powerbomb. Daniels takes him over in the ring. Block by Daniels. Black sent into the turnbuckle. Running clotheslines. Back hand springboard elbow. Blue thunder backbreaker for two. Black sent into the middle turnbuckle. STO for two. Forearms by Black. Off the ropes. Uranago turned into an armdrag. Black with a leaping enziguri. Black fails on a springboard clothesline. Fell off the top rope. Wouldn’t surprise me if he did that on purpose. Whip into the corner. Boot by Black. He gets all fired up. Middle fingers for the fans. Black o’connor roll into a peroxism. Kneels down and punches away on Daniels. Black climbs to the top rope. Daniels catches him. Goes for a superplex. Headbutts by Black. Daniels back down. Palm thrust sends Black to the floor. Daniels catches him. Flatliner into the koji clutch. Crowd really wants the champion to tap. Daniels hooks Black’s arm to insure he won’t make it to the ropes. Black uses his other hand instead. Wow. Uranagi. Best. Moonsault. Ever. Misses. Charge misses. Pele kick by Black. Black places Daniels on the top rope. Daniels elbows him off. Kick right to the face by Black. Daniels in the tree of woe. Double stomp by Black. Leaps across for a coast-to-coast dropkick. 1-2-NO! Slap to the face. Bucklebomb. Primal scream and a superkick. 1-2-NO! Black keeps him down. To the top for a Phoenix splash. He rolls through. A second superkick. God’s last gift. Kick by Daniels. Angel’s wings!  Black crawls to the edge of the ring. Daniels covers. 1-2-Black gets his foot on the ropes. Daniels has to send Black back in the ring. Kicks by the champion. Snapmare into LAST RITES! Bell rings. The thirty minute time limit expires. I’m appalled.
-Winner (s)/Time/Rating: Christopher Daniels/30:00/***3/4
-When has a Ring of Honor match ever had a 30 minute time limit main event? I’ll hang up and listen for a response. I don’t understand why these two had to have two time limit draws in such a short amount of time, especially when one guy is on his way out of the door. Daniels offers Black a chance to wrestle for five more minutes. Of course Black turns him down. Predictable lazy booking out of Ring of Honor. The usual.  Black makes fun of the fans, calls them ROHbots, and tries to leaves. Roderick Strong sends Black in to the ring. Strong accidentally clotheslines Daniels. Enziguri by Daniels on Black. Strong clotheslines Black outside. Daniels and Strong argue. This sure hints at a three way. Black says he’s going to walk out of the company the ROH world champion. Strong says he’ll be champion to a big pop. And Strong is a heel everyone. Daniels wishes Strong luck and says he’ll be the first challenger. Again though, ROH wants Roderick Strong to be a HEEL!
Show Thoughts: For a two hour show with a lot of questionable booking decisions, there was still a lot of good action that makes this a thumbs up show by itself. I’m not a fan of having a heel win and then immediately doing a time limit, but what can you do? The Ring of Honor we all knew and loved from 2004-2008 is dead. Hey, speaking of…
Disk 1 Bonus Matches
-ROH World Tag Team Championship: The Briscoes (Mark and Jay Briscoe w/Daizee Haze)(champions) vs. Age of the Fall (Tyler Black and Jimmy Jacobs w/Lacey) (Final Battle 2007)(12.30.2007)
This was during the period when Haze was whoring herself out to many men…to be at ringside for them. Apparently. Crowd chants “Man Up” loudly. Paul Turner asks for the Code of Honor to be followed. -Winner (s)/Time/Rating: NEW world tag team champions- Age of the Fall/19:03/***3/4
-A little better than I remembered. Not the classic they were shooting for, but there were some incredible moves done by all four men. I think a slower pace with more build would have made for an even better match.
-“ROH is changing.” “There’s no telling what will happen in ROH In 2008.” These are two actual quotes from one Dave Prazak. Little did he know. And how fitting that ROH in 2007 ends with the Age of the Fall’s theme song of nothing but screaming. The symbolism is not lost on me. Considering everything that’s happened since this match, I’d say it’s pretty fitting.
-Bryan Danielson vs. Tyler Black (Episode 18 of ROH on HDNet)
After two no-contests  in their previous HDNet matches, it all comes down to this. Some mat wrestling between both men as Danielson goes slightly heel with a slap to the face. -Winner (s)/Time/Rating: Tyler Black/21:25/****1/4
-A little better than their previous two affairs due to the hot ending. What a fantastic match this was. Danielson played slight heel and spent the entire match attempting to slow Tyler Black down. His constant use of mat wrestling and the sleeper hold was fantastic. I loved Black’s quickening the pace and embracing his babyface roll the entire match. Just a great dynamic and another match of the year candidate on HDNet. Sure did produce a number of great matches in the first year.
-Bryan Danielson vs. Tyler Black vs. Kenny Omega (Bound by Hate)(11.08.2008)

-Very good match here. Not sure why it was included as a bonus, but there was a lot of good stuff to be had. Crowd was way into Danielson for the entire match and got behind Omega when it seemed he might have a chance to win. Remember when ROH showcased new stars?
Disk Two Matches
-ROH World Championship: Nigel McGuinness (champion) vs. Tyler Black (Take No Prisoners)(03.16.2008)
Let’s watch Tyler Black become a singles star in one night. He had already been a former tag team champion and was clearly on the way up. Let’s just say this helped Black tremendously. He defeated Claudio Castagnoli, Delirious, and Go Shiozaki during the opening match of the Pay-Per-View to earn this title match. McGuinness sends Black into the post shoulder first immediately. Black dives into the crowd, but McGuinness gets the chair up. Prazak calls it an epic fail. Hard to argue that point. Black is nearly unconscious. Referee determines the match can continue however. Cover for two. Short lariat dodges. Black gets a roll-up for two. Uppercut in the corner. Running European. Lariat. London Dungeon. Black puts his foot on the bottom rope. -Winner (s)/Time/Rating: STILL ROH world champion- Nigel McGuinness/21:23/****1/2
-Despite Tyler Black being a heel, he practically became a babyface in one night by surviving one of the best Ring of Honor matches of 2008. An amazing match that which put over the greatness of the champion but also helped build Black into a credible challenger. THIS is the match where Black established he’d be the man to eventually carry the company as the world champion.
-Relaxed Rules Match: The Briscoes (Mark and Jay) vs. The Age of the Fall (Jimmy Jacobs and Tyler Black)(w/Lacey and Rain)(Supercard of Honor 3)(03.28.2008)
Speaking of feuds. Age of the Fall debuted in September at the Man Up Pay-Per-View by hanging Mark Briscoe. They’d go back and forth for months with Age of the Fall winning the tag team titles at Final Battle 2007. Although Black and Jacobs lost the titles just a month later, this feud persisted. Relaxed Rules essentially means you have to murder someone in order to get disqualified. And even then , it’s referee’s discretion. I was never a fan of faction warfare, and Age of the Fall symbolized my disinterest in that garbage. Make no mistake about it though. This is a fantastic match in a series of them that these two had over almost a full year. Since intermission is next, these two teams go wild against each other. Interesting note that while the Briscoes have had a number of matches against Age of the Fall, this is only their second match against the Jacobs/Black incarnation. Mark Briscoe shows how little he’s learned in a year by doing a moonsault off the top on to all of the other men.   Mark also dives off a trampoline nto Black and Jacobs in the crowd. That was different. Into the crowd and Jacobs drinks some booze a fan snuck into the building. Awesome. These four go all over the place and use all kinds of chairs. This was sort of awkward placing with another brawl taking place just before this match, but it was at least different. Stevens and Strong was like a fight. This was a wacky brawl. The lighting is also a little better in this building, meaning we can actually see what the hell is going on when they fight in the crowd. One thing you can’t accuse any of these four men of doing is phoning it in. Crazy bumps taken everywhere. And then a table gets introduced…
Jacobs and Mark end up on the second level with the table being on the first. Tyler Black is laid prone on the table. Milio Beasely from Full Impact Pro moves Tyler off the table. Beasely is put on the table, and Briscoe dives on top of him. Table done. Mark done. Jay takes Black to the ring, but Jacobs runs in with a plastic bag. Double team by both Age of the Fall members. Mark putting someone that wasn’t in this match through a table… not the brightest idea ever. Peroxism by Black leads to a back senton by Jacobs. Jay barely kicks out. Jay comes back and puts Jacobs face first into the middle turnbuckle. Big boot on Tyler. Falcon arrow on Jacobs. DVD on Black gets two. That looked nasty too. Jay driller but Jacobs gets the low blow while Black gets the small package. I love how they’re playing off what happened last year as Jay fights two men while Mark gets hurt again. Super contra code by Black and Jacobs. 1-2-NO! Black goes for the Phoenix splash, but MARK PUSHES HIM OFF! SPRINGBOARD DOOMSDAY DEVICE. NO! END TIME BY JACOBS! MARK PASSES OUT! WHAT AN AMAZING FINISH!
-Winner (s)/Time/Rating: Age of the Fall/15:04/****
-Unless you watch the replay, there’s no possible way for you to see how the Doomsday got reversed. I loved that finish so much. That alone is worth a half star.
-Bryan Danielson vs. Tyler Black (w/Jimmy Jacobs) (ROH world tag team champion) (New Horizons)(07.26.2008)

-Every time these two men walked into a wrestling, they had a four star match for the most part. I guess this was chosen because the ring broke, but a lot of their battles are interchangeable. Great back and forth. Great exchanges. A whole lot of greatness basically. Not much more to say.

-Winner (s)/Time/Rating: STILL ROH world champion- Nigel McGuinness/30:25/****1/2
-I believe 411 mania’s Ari Berenstein called this his Ring of Honor match of the year for 2008. Pretty easy to see why. I’d say this is easily one of the best matches based on the performances of all four men. Hard to top McGuinness’ in-ring work as the world champion.  Black performed really well as an underdog babyface. Danielson and Claudio fit into the early portions nicely too. A fantastic match that showed why ROH wasn’t as bad as some people might have thought in 2008.
-ROH World Tag Team Championship: Age of the Fall (Jimmy Jacobs and Tyler Black)(champions) vs. Kevin Steen and El Generico (Driven 9.18.2008)
Steen and Generico seemed destined to win these damn tag team titles for months, and this was Steenerico’s last best chance to finally win the titles. Jacobs was in the midst of a rivalry with Austin Aries and was losing his mind slowly but surely. -Winner (s)/Time/Rating: NEW world tag team champions- Kevin Steen and El Generico/20:29/****1/2
-Undoubtedly one of the best world tag team title matches in Ring of Honor history. The crowd was flat-out nuclear for most of this match. An amazing contest. Great nearfalls throughout. Amazing. I don’t even know what to say because even a couple years later, I thought this was better than 99.5% of what I’ve seen here in 2010. I absolutely loved this match from start to finish. Ring of Honor WISHES their tag team division was this good now.
Final Thoughts: The collection of Tyler Black bonus matches makes this an easy thumbs up. It gives fans a chance to see a time when Ring of Honor was at its hottest and producing match of the year candidates on essentially every show. How many other DVDs have three ****1/2 matches on it? Not many. If you’re a long-time ROH fan and DVD collector, save your money for other indy wrestling DVDs this holiday season.

  1. Reading all this makes me angry again about the way a lot of the ROH fans turned on Black. He definitely didn’t deserve that kind of treatment. After all, the circumstances that led to him being given the belt far too late weren’t under his control. Booing HIM was ridiculous. ROHbots (not all ROH fans, mind you) like to think of themselves as smart fans, but really, they’re a pretty big bunch of marks.
